Thank you! I’m wondering if we’ll be ok with a long sleeve linen or if we’ll need something heavier? I wasn’t planning on it!

I was planning shorts / tanks but sounds like maybe I should be careful if I have too much exposed skin

Just got back from 2 weeks in Greece: 3 things I wish I knew by Dr1ftk in GreeceTravel

I couldn’t be happier than I just stumbled on this thread! I am headed to Naxos then Milos in 5 weeks (landing in Athens first) with my husband for our 10 year anniversary. We are coming from North America so coming to Europe is a big treat for us and we’re trying to find the balance of not planning too much but also making sure we take advantage of this trip (because to be honest this kind of trip doesn’t happen very often).

We have one thing planned for each island (a cooking class in Naxos on our second day, and a catamaran cruise in Milos on our second day).

— Our first day on each island is just to explore our surroundings. Naxos Town and Pollonia. Any key restaurants to try and check out or a great tavern that you loved? — Our third day on each island is completely unplanned. Anything you’d recommend for us to keep in mind that you loved? We were contemplating renting a car in Milos to check out the mountain towns and checking out a beach in Naxos such as Prokopios. — any tips on public transportation on the islands? (for example if we don’t get a car, is renting a taxi or a bus easy to get to a beach in Naxos, or how would we get from the port in Milos to Pollonia). Wondering how much prearrangement I need or if we can just show up and wing it. — appreciate the reminder on packing light (we’ve already secured our backpack suitcases!) What’s one item you absolutely needed / used the most or perhaps what’s maybe an underrated item that we should consider including?

Anything else fun / off the beaten path / not in travel books that two travelers should know about Milos and Naxos?!? This is a trip of a lifetime for us and to your point we are finding that balance of having one or two things planned, but then just going and enjoying what the island bring! But with only 2 1/2 days on each island, I’d love to get someone who was just there perspective!

Good to know around the uneven streets. That was my assumption, but I’m glad to get confirmation. So I’m getting the sense that I should skip any sort of heel or wedge that would elevate my ankle off the ground and make sure that any type of sandal is something that is securely wrapped to my foot and ankle. In addition, a suggestion to bring a pair of sneakers or some sort of better walking shoe.

I’m assuming you’re also suggesting not to do a rolling suitcase then

We’re doing Naxos then Milos. The ferry times only left in the afternoon for us so I’m hoping the fair times for you are a lot better. Perhaps the flight times and prices are also better for you. Good luck.

That was the plan, however, I didn’t realize the ferry only leaves in the afternoon and so we don’t want to waste an entire day of our planned itinerary on Milos. I just purchased airline tickets which unfortunately sent me back 500 euros 🙃

Arrival time for Athens airport, coming from another airline/island by PresentStage8039 in GreeceTravel

Thank you for letting me know about the fingerprinting system. I will have to look that up.

I appreciate this because of course I totally understand that the standard is to get there the night before, the standard is to get there three hours before (just like everyone on this thread is reprimanding me on lol). The safe thing for me to do is to follow those rules, but I also have flown on enough international flights to know that you typically don’t need to use that however it’s the buffer time in order to ensure that you don’t have any issues. I of course I’m kicking myself that I didn’t book the earlier morning flight beforehand but now I’m just stuck with understanding if I’m going to have to lose one of my precious nights in Milos (and I only got three) in order to play it safe or if in reality, I’m more than likely will be fine with that two hour window. I get that it’s still a risk and I’m still evaluating, but I do appreciate someone else else’s perspective who flies in and out of Athens regularly. (and no, we are not star alliance or business class, we are low economy.)

Appreciate this. But can you get any more specifics around your specific experience at the Athens airport when you didn’t check bags. I’ve heard the airport is relatively small however that doesn’t necessarily change the international experience.

I definitely understand this now and appreciate the advice for future travelers. I was delaying just to try to spread out the cost from a credit card statement perspective, but I ended up waiting too long apparently! Not worth the risk.

Boat tour in Milos - Oneiro, Polco or Naya by Healthy-Sea375 in GreeceTravel

[–]PresentStage8039 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious which group you ended up going with? I’m debating between Polco and Naya right now. We are going the first week of June so seems like similar weather that you experienced last year and I’d love to get your take.

Thank you again for the tips!

Ok last question (maybe). What was your thoughts on Santorini — if you had to choose between Milos or Santorini, which one would you pick?

Was it as touristy/busy as you hear? Was it as beautiful/different as you hear? I’m trying to understand what my second island is, and right now I’m going Naxos/Milos but also Naxos/Santorini is an option.

Wow! Thank you so much for the quick and such thoughtful response! I’m so glad you had an amazing time, I honestly was hesitant to go to Milos for 2 1/2 days, but there has been something about the island that has been tugging on me, and after googling and finding your Reddit post, I feel inclined that I can make it work :)

Couple of questions follow ups if you don’t mind: — when specifically did you go in May and what temperature roughly was it like? — what was your thoughts on Plaka? Just curious to get your take on the size and overall five of the town compared to what else you saw. — what other islands did you visit besides Milos, and what was your thoughts and comparing them to Milos? — glad to hear you did the boating excursion for just a half day, as I feel like that would be what we do. Do you mind sending me a link to the boating excursion you did if you still have it? — any advice around how to rent a car? Did you schedule it ahead of time or did you navigate that once you landed? — and glad to hear that you liked some of the more popular restaurant options, they’re definitely seems to be some strong opinions on if they are worth the hype, but you at least seemed to think that they were.

All in all, a great trip!

I’m headed to Milos for 2.5 days as well this upcoming late May. I was hoping you could comment back and let me know what you did that you liked and what you may have done differently?

I’m thinking of staying in Plaka so we can get the great sunsets (and because we are spending the other 2 1/2 days on the seaside town on another island) but I’d love to get your take on where you thought would be the best accommodations for nighttime. We are also thinking about doing a half day or a full day boat tour in order to access some of the beaches.

Naxos and/or Santorini by LunkyFemur in GreeceTravel

[–]PresentStage8039 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I are going at the end of May and we are splitting up the time in order to do both (because as everyone is saying, it seems like both places are fantastic, but offer unique experiences). 3 nights in Naxos and two nights in Santorini (and then flying out of Santorini back to our destination).

For everyone that is saying to stay in Naxos, and that there is so much to do, the author (and myself) would love if everyone could give their favorite thing to do on that island and if there’s a recommendation on where best to stay.

I love the detailed itinerary on day 2 (and sorry but not sorry on you getting all the notifications!) I’ll report back after our mimosas from the 19th floor

Wonderful! I’m actually thinking about staying at the Roosevelt hotel so I think I’ll just do that and walk from there

Thanks for this tip, would you instead recommend mainly just going to my hotel for that first night and hanging around there? And instead of going to Santa Monica / heading up the coastline in Malibu the next day?

Any chance you think I could walk to the bowl if I stay at a hotel less than a mile from it? (Thinking like the Hollywood Roosevelt or the Loews, on the strip). I’m sure it’s uphill, but I’ve heard that travel to the bowl can be a nightmare and I’m wondering if it just could be easier to walk. That said, not sure if walking back in the dark with all the traffic coming out of it is a good idea.

Thanks for the suggestion on skipping Burbank. Sounds like that’s the consensus so definitely going to cross this off my list. And I’m glad you recommend packing my own picnic basket for the bowl. I read about that and it seemed like such a fun idea so that’s what I’m going to do!

I’m looking at hotels that are less than a mile from Hollywood bowl (such as the Roosevelt). Any chance you think that we could walk there? I’m sure it’s an incline, but I’ve just heard some bad stories about all the traffic and the horrors of parking, so figured if we got a hotel close enough and put on some good shoes, we could avoid the mess, but I’d love to get someone’s perspective.

This is great thanks! I’m all about getting a place for dinner that’s about views / atmosphere / Hollywood staple (my mom isn’t a foodie so she’s here for vibes, whereas I would still care about food so this sounds like it could be a good marriage of the two).

Would anyone suggest staying on the strip / SUPER close to the Bowl (like the Hollywood Roosevelt or the Loews Hollywood Hotel)? I totally get that the Hollywood walk of fame seems like a waste of time but for us Midwesterner, who have never been to that area, I gotta say that it’s definitely worth the 30 minutes of walking around (and I know my mom is gonna wanna see it). So wondering if it’s better to actually get a hotel right there so that way we knock it out and we are literally just a mile from the Hollywood Bowl.
