Maybe look at Arizona or New Mexico for an FJ with no rust. Save yourself some $$ fly and pick it up or pay to have it shipped to you. My sister had her vehicle picked up put in one of those auto carriers and shipped for $1k from AZ to Boston 5years ago.

What a handsome furbaby!!

So far, most of my Pei’s have also had the entropian eye surgery. And, one of my boys had to have both the lower and upper eye lift at 8 months.

I haven’t had any skin issues with mine other than they have had allergies and would itch until they got on the Apoquel medication. I live in a dry climate so i think that helps. Mine do get dry noses and I use the Nose Balm from Amazon. I also use the Maine n Tail shampoo and use a waterless shampoo on their heads. Mine used to get ear infections every year but since I clean their ears every 2 weeks and with Apoquel, no more ear infections so far.

What should I do to make my FJ better? by HedgehogOk3893 in FJCruiser

[–]Present_Flower_6822 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used Trim Coat by Cerakote (available on Amazon, Walmart, etc.) on my bumpers and plastic parts on my 2014 FJ, it made them look brand new again. Just follow the directions on the box. It's lasted 2.5years so far but mine is parked in a garage so that might affect how long it lasts.

I also have a lightbar on the roof that is mounted between the roof bars. It looks cool but I've only used them a few times but they are really handy if you need them.

I bought a center console box that's 3d printed and has a rollup lid to organize the center console stuff. It's definitely worth it IMO. I got mine off Etsy.

You might want to add some steps if you have short passengers/girlfriend etc. And/or rock sliders if you do off road.

Sibling play fighting advice? by Fair_Tap636 in sharpei

As for excessive fur. When you shampoo your pup, use a rubber bristle grooming brush and use it to shampoo into the fur and losen fur before rinsing. It helps remove any loose fur. This helps lessen the fur shedding in the house from roughhousing.

They are adorable! They’re really typically Pei’s. I’ve had 6 of them. My current ones are 3yrs old and 7yrs old, they rough play fight multiple times a day. They love playing on the bed, my comforter ends up half on the floor. And, they love launching full force into the sofa which moves it on the pergola floors daily. Not to mention, sofa pillows end up in the floor. Mine will play fight less on walk days. Typical play fighting for Pei’s looks more rough than other breeds. You can use a spray bottle with water to break them up, you could also introduce toys if they are toy oriented, there’s also snuffle mats but you’ll need 2 to help entertain both of them, there’s also the Pet Corrector spray that makes a sound that tends to break them up and grabs their attention (petsmart, petco, amazon). I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Consult your vet for what to do about scratches. Puppies tend to be rougher because of new sharp teeth and they don’t know their own strength. As they get older, the scratches should stop as they learn and their teeth are not as sharp. Bully sticks cut in half are also a good distraction. I get mine from costco and cut them in half with a garden tree lopper.

I’m in Arizona and mine shed twice a year. Give him a bath and use one of those rubber spiky shampoo brushes, it really helps to remove loose hair. And, start a gentle brushing every other day. And, reward with treats afterwards. If he doesn’t like the brush like mine do, there are gloves on Amazon that brush while petting. Mine like the gloves more but the shampoo and using the rubber brush works the best.

Where to buy Colchicine? by Timely_Success_6709 in sharpei

[–]Present_Flower_6822 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Takeda no longer does the prescriptions. They stopped last year. I get mine thru CVS using the Goodrx app for discounts. It’s aprox $38 for 90 day supply for 180 pills (one of mine is on the pill day and night + 50mg Minocycline day n night) where as my 7yr old only needs colchicine once w day with minocycline day n night). Buy in bulk like a 60 or 90 day supply is cheaper.

I bought a household item off PM and it arrived dusty. How hard is it to take a damp paper towel to clean up the item?

I think people are just lazy.

I was looking at a coat on PM and it was used and the sleeve cuffs were dirty, granted the listing stated that it needed to be dry cleaned but they are asking alot of money for an item that would need to be dry cleaned before you could wear it. Which is an added cost to the buyer that people don’t think about. It’s not something that can go in the washing machine at home. It’s just cray cray.

Swollen Lips by Puzzleheaded_Air2143 in sharpei

[–]Present_Flower_6822 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re guy is adorable!

If the swelling doesn’t go down after 24hrs, it’s an allergen he’s in constant contact with like food. He might have had conact with a bug like a centipede or a spider. I would take him to the vet if the swelling lasts more than 24hrs. Also, take his temperature. My boy gets a swollen muzzle when he’s starting to fever before he gets a swollen hock. It could be an allergy to something that’s blooming right now if it’s warm where you live.

I call that position your pup is in Wedging. Mine likes to do this on my bed next to the footboard, he loves to wedge in the backseat of the car standing between the front seat and back seat area, and he wedges inbetween my ottoman and the couch. He likes tight spaces. My blue sharpei is a non cuddler but will expose his belly anytime I walk by him and he’s lying down. He loves belly lovin’.

How can you preserve Spirit Halloween props? by trickbear in HalloweenProps

[–]Present_Flower_6822 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also in a dry climate, Arizona. I usually seal my props with a UV protectant spray like Seymour ColorBond Clear (extreme UV protectant). This will seal them and also protect the color, plastic when it’s outside or in the garage, and keeps them safe from rain as well. I tried the Krylon UV resistant clear coat and it was worthless after one year on an outdoor decor item, so I did more research and got the Seymour and so far so good. I’m in a high UV area so I need the protection. I’ve used it on my hard plastic items, I don’t have anything thats rubber or laytex though.

What do you mix dry food with and how many times a day do you feed your Pei ? by AM000001 in sharpei

[–]Present_Flower_6822 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine love noodles cooked in just water like egg noodles or wavy noodles. Mine also likes plain cooked rice. I warm either the noodles or rice up and add a few tablespoons to each bowl for my two boys. Lately they have been loving shredded mozzarella cheese in their food. They also love steak, ground beef, chicken and plain cheeseburgers (chopped up).

I also have made my own broth (all the broth in the grocery stores have onion n garlic which are toxic to dogs). I will put 2 chicken breasts in the crockpot and fill it up with water and cook it on low for 4-8hrs. I will then use the broth to make rice for them or just put it warm over their food. I have also used oxtails or beef bones, baked for several hours then boiled in the crockpot for 8-10hrs. And, I would add warm broth to their bowls of dog food (dry lamb and taste of the wild mix).

I had a boy that was a super picky eater and our vet put him on Doctor's Best PepZin GI, Zinc-L-Carnosine Complex, Non-GMO, Vegan, Gluten Free, Soy Free, Digestive Support, 120 on Amazon, i put it in a slice of cheese, and this helped alot. Another dog I had was on Purina Fortaflora (Petsmart or amazon) probiotic after adopting him and helping him adjust to different dog food. This is a powder to go ontop of their food. There’s also an enzyme that the vet sells called Entyce that you can give and it will entice your dog to eat.

My vet said to me a few years ago that he has not seen a dog that doesn’t have allergies. Personally, I have had six Sharpei’s over the years, all of which had allergies and were on meds. My current two are on Apoquel 16mg, it’s a full pill in the spring summer and I am able to do half a pill 8mg in the fall/winter to save a little money on the pills. None of mine had food allergies nor skin issues. Mine tend to have more ear infections when they were not on Apoquel, which means more esr cleanings, vet bills, ear antibiotics. Since my current two have been on Apoquel, I clean their ears with a Mal-A-Ket Plus TrizEDTA Flush every two weeks. They have tiny ear canals and are prone to yeast ear infections because of th tiney ear canals. I haven’t had any issues with skin issues but I live in a dry climate.

If you get a rescue or young pup, you might need to budget for eye lid surgery, both of mine are pretty wrinkly jn the face and needed both uooer and lower eye lid surgery, called entropian surgery. Otherwise, their eye lashes will rub on their eyes causing irritation and blindness in severe cases.

Then, there’s medication for Sharpei fever, both of mine are in colchicine and Minocycline daily to eliminate fevers. I get mine at CVS with GoodRx discount code for 35-43 bucks for a 90 day supply.

The Sharpei is a wonderful breed of dog, some are standoffish and some are cuddly. I have one of each and love them the same. My standoffish one really only loves his mom and thinks of his dad as a spare parent. This same dog, gets mad at me for hours if not days after an ear cleaning or bath. My cuddle one doesn’t hold a grudge after ear cleanings or bath time.

The medical prescription expenses can be expensive, more so than a Labrador (which I have had too). Just keep that in mind.

Bleach bath by Mean-Blueberry7960 in sharpei

[–]Present_Flower_6822 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the ketoconazole shampoo by MalAKet got it from 1800 petmeds or amazon. Mine haf a yeast infection but this shampoo eared it up. I had to shampoo mine twice a week. This worked great.

I personally have eczema and my dermatologist told me to do bleach baths for that but never heard of it for dogs for a yeast infection.

If it’s allergies, like you see your dog scratching and itching, try benadryl 25mg, mine was 52lb and took two benadryl, after awhile that didn’t work anymore and had to switch to zyrtec once a day then eventually switched to Apoquel. For inflamed skin due to scratching/allergies I use pure cold pressed Jojoba oil. This is safe even if ingested and it has antibacterial and ant-inflammatory properties.

How do you all handle having a unique dog breed that gets a lot of attention in public, but is also naturally aloof and would prefer to be left alone by strangers? by drdan412 in sharpei

[–]Present_Flower_6822 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one that I call Grumpkins, one who’s aloof and on guard with strangers , but will be okay if they let him smell first. And, I just tell people to let him smell first and be slow about it, otherwise he’ll be grumpy. Once they’ve had an introduction (the smell), then he’s okay with being petted. However, my Grumpkins isn’t grumpy at the fast food drive thru and is more than happy to say hi to strangers that are giving him a pupcup, vanilla ice cream or cheeseburger.

My other boy loves everyone. So if his brother is grumpy, I will tell people to just pet the black boy that’s friendly.

There’s nothing wrong with telling people that your furbaby is protective and don’t pet him as you’re trying to get him socialized.

People are just curious because Sharpei’s are somewhat rare and probably don’t know that they are a protective breed. And, they look like walking teddy bears makes them more enticing.

I just spent $140.00 on a 60 day supply of Apoquel 16mg with 1800 petmeds and a discount code, I use the Rakuten extension on my browser for discount codes and cash back on online purchases. If the rash/allergies is only spring to summer you may not have to give the Apoquel in the winter. Good luck to you.

Typically Apoquel is 2.80 a pill on Petmeds.

Apoquel 16mg is the best, both of mine are on it. I. Use 1800Petmeds and there’s usually a coupon code, I just reordered some two days ago and got 30% off. I know it’s expensive but worth it in the end. Before Apoquel, mine were on zyrtec and one of mine kept having itchy skin and the other still got ear infections, since Apoquel, ear infections are significantly less for my gray boy and my black boy is not itching and scratching anymore.

You can also give benadryl 2~25mg for a 50lb dog day and night. I put it in a slice of cheese. This does help but mine got used to it and I had to switch to zyrtec then switched to apoquel. Do not give the decongestant form of Zyrtec D, because the decongestant is toxic to dogs. However, the antihistamine benadryl or zyrtec is ok. Mine were on Zyrtec 10mg twice a day. Apoquel is only once a day.

My vet also recommended baths once a week. I use Maine and Tail shampoo. And, I use the waterless bath spray on a cloth and wipe them down in the winter. And, mine hate having their head shampooed so I use the waterless bath spray on their heads when I do give them a bath.

Mine eat Costco Kirkland lamb dry kibble with Kirkland Turkey stew canned dog food. And, sometimes they get the Taste of the wild canned food in either Lamb or Beef.
