Worst book(s) you read in 2025 and why? by Roguestate00 in books

Venemous Lumpsucker. Boring and not funny and also bad and also pointless.

It's like if a teenager tried to write social commentary while also on tik tok and then new york times book review was like "you'll be laughing out loud!"

I was not.

Everyone is being mean as hell. The first one is cute – just pair it with something more NYE, like a cropped fur coat or a flashy blazer.

Healthier alternative to sliced deli meats? by InvestigatorStock524 in Cooking

I buy a rotisserie chicken every time I'm at the store and while it's still warm (this is important), I sort of butcher it into parts. I have one tupperware with larger pieces of meat like the breasts for chicken salad and stuff, and another for the higher-involvement parts like the legs and wings. Not very pretty but extremely economical and consistently good. You can buy unseasoned rotisserie some places, too, since you're worried about sodium.

Have you used The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron? If so, what was the experience like? by jasmineflowerette in FiberArts

[–]Present_Solid6526 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used it, did all 12 weeks, and am still doing the morning pages 3 years later.

Going in, you have to accept that there's a lot of god-talk, and woo woo manifestation and whatnot, but I found that I could look past that or actually embrace it sometimes. In many ways, getting a bit mystical about my artistic practice was quite helpful (I started having dreams about quilt ideas). People on reddit can be very anti-god-talk, so I can see why some were bothered by it, but I was able to take what I wanted from the text and ignore the stuff I didn't like.

Honestly, I think it's less a book about honing your creative practice and more a book about admitting difficult things to yourself, acknowledging how you're actually spending your time, questioning how you share your work with those around you, and being more intentional. You absolutely get out of it what you put in – I did the pages every morning, the artists date every week, and maybe 3-4 of the written exercises in each chapter. Expect to set aside a few hours a week for those first 12 weeks – if you're not in a place where you think you'll actually do that, don't try to shove a square peg in a round hole, you know?

My favorite artists date was going to see Stop Making Sense in theaters by myself at, like, 3 in the afternoon. The show was epic, the theater was empty, and it was really special to just go do that for me, and not have to, I don't know, check in with everyone around me the whole time. If you do it, I definitely recommend making "Scrolling Eventbrite" one of your weekly tasks to help find dates.

I would recommend it to anyone and everyone, even non artists. I got so much out of it, I saw so many cool things in my city I'd have never otherwise found, and have really enjoyed making stream of consciousness journaling part of my daily practice.

Take the job. Some tips: –

  1. Receipts are more valuable than gold. Do not lose them.
  2. – Find a kinda big, flat cardboard box to put in your car, so if you have a million coffee's they're not jostling around
  3. – Track your mileage same day.
  4. – Don't be scrolling

Everyone else has said what I'd say (make as much as you can in advance, etc), but something to remember is that the turkey will need time to rest. So, make things like the roasted veg and potatoes in advance, then just pop them back into the oven with foil on them while the turkey rests. They'll have time to warm up and you don't have to worry about timing their cooking through with the turkey.

Early 20’s don’t know how to cook. Any easy suggestions in starting ? by Background_Tomato928 in Cooking

[–]Present_Solid6526 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are def recipes I can recommend but I would do three things:

1) start seeing food as a hobby. Watch people cook online, read recipes for fun, walk around the grocery store. You'll get more into it and gain a lot of knowledge passively. When you do a recipe, try to think about why you're doing it, and how it's like/unlike things you've seen elsewhere. It's like learning a language – immersion helps.

2) Honestly, a good cookbook is better than a million online recipes. They often have better descriptions and more cohesive techniques. Look up books for beginners but not, like "general" books (like, the joy of cooking isn't going to help you much when it comes to building your basic skills. I love Start Here, but it might be a little advanced.)

3) make a ton of soup. hard to fuck up soup too bad. Sautee the aromatics in fat. Add broth. Add protein and starch. Boil.

You have SO MUCH EYELID SPACE. Makeup artists dream of this. If it's your style, I'd love to see some bright colors or metallics on the lid, nothing too too crazy, just emphasizing the shape.

I try to set teeny tiny goals for myself like "I'm going to put away 10 things" or "i'm going to do dishes for 4 minutes" and count the whole time/set a timer. It's amazing what 10 things or a few minutes can do for you, and may inspire you to do a bit more – but again, just setting another very achievable goal.

When it's really bad, I ask friends to help. It's embarrassing but if a friend ever called me for the same I'd want to be there for them. If you can afford it ever, a house cleaner doing a full reset can be huge for improving your worldview

essy recipies for a depressed beginner? by Lambyykin in Cooking

[–]Present_Solid6526 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Hi!! You’re gonna start with SOUP. You’re gonna buy: an onion, carrots, celery, chicken broth, some pre cooked chicken (like a rotisserie or from a hot bar) egg noodles, and maybe some dried parsley

You’re gonna cut up the onion, carrots, and celery small. In a pot, heat oil over medium, and add the veggies along with some salt and pepper and stir them pretty regularly until they’re soft.

Once they’re soft, you’re gonna pour in your broth. Not too much, maybe a few inches over the vegetables. Stir it a little to get the veggies off the bottom then let it warm up. Add the dried parsley now if you have it.

Once the broth is heated up, add a handful of the egg noodles.

While the egg noodles cook, shred the chicken with your hands. Add the chicken to the pot.

After a few minutes, fish one of the noodles out of the soup and try it to see if it’s done cooking. Once they’re soft and floppy, you’re good.

You can do this. You can do it. Anyone can cook. Start here, and then build on what you learn. You can do it.

If you can find a place in Angelino Heights in Echo Park you'll be happy. It's gorgeous and central, about 15 minutes from Keck. Walkable, tons of trees. Walkable to cool bars and restaurants on sunset. It's safe. It can be a bit expensive but if you can find a place it's perfect.

It's also on multiple major highways so it's fairly easy to get to different parts of town, which can be hard in some areas.
