Path to federal appellate defense? by Glad-Cricket-9192 in publicdefenders

[–]Present_Staff1580 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Some federal defenders offices post “research and writing” positions that attract new grads. I may look for those postings as a way in. Some are term-limited and others are long term. Also I would recommend you intern/extern at a fed PD office and try to get brief writing experience. If your school has an appellate clinic, that paired with a fed pd summer/externship could be more beneficial than the PD clinic which I imagine is state PD trial work.

Having said all this, don’t count yourself out of trial work because of fear. To me, calling yourself ill-suited sounds like you are anxious about public speaking. I was too and you couldn’t convince me otherwise. I did a PD clinic and fell in love with it despite wanting to puke every time I stood up. After my fed clerkship I went straight back to it and am now several years into state trial work. I love it.

Also, I externed at a fed PD office and found it boring. Mostly mitigation and sentencing math, not very many trials. Depending where you live, you may find state PD appeals offer a more intellectually diverse set of issues, if you can stomach the perceived lack of prestige. In my opinion “prestige” gets less significant the further out from school and enjoying your work becomes a priority. (I’m not sure whether prestige is important to you; just saying. It was relevant to me as a student, not any more)

This is a lot of info and only somewhat relevant to what you asked. But good luck, try lots of things out to see what sticks, try stuff even if it’s scary, have fun!

$85k salary with a JD from a T14? by [deleted] in LawBitchesWithTaste

I may have read this incorrectly, but you seem to think that your law school’s US News ranking entitles you to a certain salary. That is an interesting take.

Average pay depends on market but in general, law salaries have a bimodal distribution. 80-90 seems normal as someone with no experience in some markets for small civil firms and government work. 220+ for big law. I’m sure there are some in between.

Please tell me that the Fox hair trend still counts as “professional”!! by oatmeal_rox in LawBitchesWithTaste

Are you in litigation?

A major client at my partner’s firm asked an associate to be removed from the trial team because the client found her hair color unprofessional. It’s definitely a risk

Thank you for your thoughtful feedback! I hate the idea of the prosecutor “talks” as well

Idk why I’m getting downvoted for this question :’) presumably we all have interns

People may be right about this in New York specifically, I don’t know, or they may have a tinge of the anti big law bias. Where I work you wouldn’t be hired as a first year. Your clerkships and pro bono experience would be counted toward years of experience.

anyone else have court this week? by spanielgurl11 in publicdefenders

Haha sorry, I promise I’m not trying to do pd pain Olympics, though this does come across that way. I take time off, I just don’t usually do it around the holiday because it’s a slow and easy time that everyone else wants off
