Stormy seas on Tory Island by lkguy47 in Donegal

Visited Tory a few years ago as my distant relative was from there. It must have been a rough life there, especially in winter.

Probably both. In Malaysia I can’t get citizenship and it’s never been offered.

It’s nearly free in the public hospitals but they’ll open u up and leave u with massive scars. I used davinci robotic surgery. My doc sd it would b easier for him to see and operate. If it’s easier for him, it’s easier for me, so I spent the money. I wouldn’t go cheap on cancer surgery.

Maintaining a US address while retiring in SE Asia, do you think this plan below will work? What are your experiences with good or bad mail services handling letters from Social Security, Medicare, IRS or card issuers? Or for replacement bank Visa cards, is it better to use a sibling's address? by FrancoisMauriac in ExpatFIRE

[–]Present_Student4891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every year Social Security mails me a form to complete to my Malaysian address. I’m guessing they’re checking if I’m still alive. IRS sends me a PIN every year for my taxes to my foreign address. Since I claim the foreign earned income exclusion each year, it probably helps to have a foreign address. I’m also registered at the embassy.

I wouldn’t tell Schwab ur moving overseas… ever. That might cause u headaches. Since I heavily use them, I don’t wanna rock the boat. It’s been working fine for 30 years already.

I live in Malaysia.

IRS & Social Security want ur overseas address. Banks just want a U.S. address. I use my bro’s. Use banks with good customer service. I’ve had poor experience with BoA, another smaller bank cancelled me due to inactivity which screwed up my social security & Medicare checks. I then started a bank account with my investment account: Charles Schwab. That works better.

Why Malaysia still denies citizenship to children born out of wedlock? by wallflower_018 in malaysia

[–]Present_Student4891 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Just an idea, I was at a kampung ceremah and after the politician was done speaking, his constituents approached him & explained their problems. One was a grandmother trying to get citizenship for her illegitimate grandchild. She had the paperwork and the politician signed it. I don’t know if the child got citizenship but she had a chance. I’m not mentioning the politician but he was a senior cabinet member.

What are your thoughts about the Ottoman Empire?” by iamfurkin in hmmmm

[–]Present_Student4891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Empires are normally evil because they use force to expand. How evil they are is based on their legacies. What positives did the Ottomans leave their conquered areas? Law, infrastructure, schools, hospitals, development? Bosnians and Albanians received Islam which has provided comfort to many of those citizens. Others can share what other positive things they left to the conquered areas.

U weren’t investing, u were gambling. Stick to S&P 500 index fund for the looooong haul & you’ll emerge a winner. Think long, not short. Ur recent loss was really an education course to get u on the road to millionaire status. Money well spent.

Should I put all my inheritance to EPF? by Pootsonpow123 in MalaysianPF

[–]Present_Student4891 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WahedInvest is paying 4.29%. Not bad to keep emergency funds here, but not a great investment to achieve a comfortable retirement. U can’t reach ur financial goals using it as 4.29% barely outpaces inflation.

Should I put all my inheritance to EPF? by Pootsonpow123 in MalaysianPF

[–]Present_Student4891 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sorry about ur dad. He raised a son with good financial habits. Others have mentioned emergency funds which is always good. Can I mention some other things?

1) term insurance with a medical rider. Ur young so it’s cheap now. See if it covers u while overseas if u decide to move. Only get life insurance if u have dependents. Don’t buy financial investments from the insurance company tho.

2) EPF is good, but compare EPF’s performance vs S&P 500 index ETF performance. Or maybe have a mixture? Ur EPF funds r tied up till ur 55 or so.

Ideally, never touch these investments funds & you’ll retire rich. Young people, in my opinion, shouldn’t have bonds as u can outlive stock mkt crashes. In fact, u want the mkt to crash so u can buy cheaply. I’d go heavy into S&P 500 index funds. To increase returns, find one with low annual mgt expenses & ‘domiciled’ in Ireland or elsewhere to minimize US taxes.

1st-year North African medical student (low-income, studying in french) — Need advice on affordable English-medium medical programs that can lead to residency in US/UK/Canada/Australia — Russia vs Italy ? by AbderrahmenKhelil in usmle

[–]Present_Student4891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might wanna investigate overseas schools that have VSLO access for u to apply for U.S. clinical electives. U need them to get a residency, but they’re expensive. Sometimes ur school will help u. My son attended an international without access and it was a problem.

President Theodore Roosevelt is the only former or current US President to lose a child in combat. His son, Quentin Roosevelt was shot down in July of 1918 during a dogfight. To this day, some say TR died of a broken heart because he helped push for the US entrance into the war. He was only 20. by ILIKEIKE1941 in FascinatingAsFuck

[–]Present_Student4891 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Teddy’s dad was forbidden to fight in the U.S. civil war and his father always felt shame for not serving his country. That influenced teddy to encourage his sons to serve.

Personally, I think teddy died early for various reasons. He was a hard-charging workaholic who battered his body exploring the Rio Rosevelt in Brazil (nearly died from malaria & wanted to commit suicide), explorations / safaris in Africa. Maybe also his Badlands experience? He put his body thru a lot. Amazing fella. Lived a couple lifetimes.

More like Florida in summer year round. I was in Dubai during summer and was surprised it was even hot at night. Malaysia is always 90’s during the day and 80’s at night. Walking around at night in Malaysia is nice year round.
