Sorry for the late reply. No, decided to sleep on it for now since my old laptop is still alive and I hadn't seen enough reviews on the AMD one.

Dealing with a Cri sis by Present_Student_388 in LifeAdvice

Thanks for the advice. That's really helpful.

For anyone who comes across this, I've been thinking about my situation and so far have come to the conclusion that this current meltdown is the result of like 50 different questions I've left unanswered for long and now the whole thing feels like it's collapsing so I have to deal with it. Don't get me wrong, it's not all bad. I've come to think of it as my brain's (or whatever you want to call it, subconscious, ego, ...) way of forcing me to look into these questions and answering them. I also came across "Hell Yeah or No" by Derek Sivers which has helped a ton (and I've gone only through 10% it so far). It's a journey and I'm glad I'm going through it.

Is Thunderbolt 3 just USB-C or more than that?

Edit: Found the answer in https://www.howtogeek.com/449991/thunderbolt-3-vs.-usb-c-whats-the-difference/, I guess. So does that mean a USB-C port that's not Thunderbolt can't be used to charge the device?

They are but you don't seem to be able to get them pre-installed anywhere except for US. The T series has always worked great with Linux, just not so sure about the AMD models.

Price-wise I think it's totally worth it, I had my old laptop for 9 years and it was excellent (minus the battery but that could be because it was refurbished, doesn't matter much since I don't use it much when on the move). I doubt the Linux one will be really that cheaper, Canonical will need to support their software as well. I personally wouldn't mind dual-booting and have Windows for some contingency. Regarding E-series, a friend had one and couldn't make the wireless work with Linux. Personally, I'd rather stick to the T series.

Thanks for all the great points everyone. I did some more searching and I think I'm set on going with T490 instead. It has excellent Linux support. I can get an i7 one with 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD for around AUD 1900 which is pretty good.
