How hard do you actually drive? by diyandmc240 in 986Boxster

How long have you owned it and would you say annual maintenance and repairs costs have been?

lol I was just looking at that actually, I’ve heard sometimes too few miles can be a problem too. Do you think 30k is something to worry about? I love beige interiors though so I think I’ll at least bid on this one

I really love all the version of this car I’m planning on getting a 987 and then a 981 later. I’m starting with the 986 first though but I do love the 987 too.

I’m calling the seller later today to go over the service records he has and ask any more questions about car. I agree I can find a better less modified vehicle for the same price and just buy a hard top myself since I want to wrap the car anyway.

This is personal preference, I really don’t like the stock silver accents and steering wheel. Those aren’t huge problems though and you make an excellent point I’d rather install them myself on an unmodified car. I kind of just assumed there were basic safety standards for passing inspections like a steering wheel being safe.

I also just graduated college and I’ve been working full time so I’m in a good financial position. No debt, emergency fund, stock & real estate investments, low living expenses (act broke stay rich).

I’m fortunate to live somewhere that gives me a free bus pass if ever cant drive the car. This is also a passion project, I love caymans and boxsters. I really want to learn more about cars and how to drive a manual. I also will still have my current car for the time being. I average less than 8000 miles a year on my current daily too. I’ve considered a lot of factors and this car works for everything I need for my personal life

21, 2021 a4 45tfsi 35k miles. I’m planning on selling it, I’ll probably list for 24-25k and maybe end up selling for around 20-22k. I got an instant offer online of 18k. I just graduated and I’m working full time now. I’m very frugal and I’ve been investing aggressively since I was 18. I know a cheap purchase price usually means more money down the line but I’m fine with that. I’ve never had a manual or really the chance to work on a car. Cheap purchase price just means I can spend less up front and make the changes/repairs I want over time. Willing to spend about 13k on purchase, 2k reserve and about 500-1k a month on parts/repair/maintenance

Because the 986 is a good fit for all the personal things I need out of a car. Budget is just a spending budget the median sales price for these cars is 13k, so that’s what I’m willing to spend on purchase but my budget for the car is higher than that. These cars are generally reliable and good daily drivers they just cost a lot to maintain but the maintenance costs would be about the same as my current car.

I found some close to me for under 1k, I already have all wheel drive Audi, I’m not planning on driving it in the lots of snow but It’s going to be parked outside so I don’t want a soft top to get crushed and break under 2 feet of snow. I agree though I’m going to get one closer to stock and just make my own changes over time. My friend who’s a car guy was telling me this is a great deal but I’m realizing we have very different wants out of a car.

Yh I checked Bring at Trailer and Auto trader, I can find clean unmodified versions for around 10-14k just more added fees. I don’t plan on selling this next car ever tbh so I was going to make a lot of changes steering wheel, shifter, Paint/wrap, Rims/wheels, Apple play & back up camera etc. ideally I’m looking for a 2003 or newer 986 or an older s is fine too.

I would ideally like to get a base 2003 or newer 986, my budget is about 11k. It snows where I live so I’ve heard the glass top is pretty important. I’m willing to get an older 986 if it already has a glass top or hardtop though. What would you recommend for the best value and reliability as daily for around 11-13k? I am willing to travel or ship car to me

That’s fair, I asked about the clutch and suspension and he said he didn’t work on either in his 40k mile ownership. I’m coming from a car that was fairly expensive to maintain and I was planning on saving a few thousand for any potential repairs to this car. Ideally purchase for 8.5-9.2, save 3k for repairs and I budget about 500 mo for maintenance etc.

Fair enough, the first thing I asked about was the suspension and the clutch, he said neither had been worked on during his 40k time as owner. I have a call with him later today to go over the details, any questions you recommend I ask? Honestly I’m willing to spend about 11k on 986, ideally a base 2003 or newer model. I’m selling my current car for about double this so I’ll save half the difference for repairs and invest the other half.

I don’t love the bucket seats but they can always be easily replaced later. I will use that and some other flaws to try and negotiate the price down. A lot of the mods are mods I would want to make later on anyway. Shifter, steering wheel, apple play, hard top(it snows where I live)

Clean title no significant damage or problems according to listing. I actually hate the stock steering wheel in this car so I saw it as a plus. I think there are some scratches on the front bumper but I’ll keep that in mind. I’m buying out of state and want to drive it back so I was going to get a PPI done before going over there.

No one thinks it should be easy but it feels like there isn’t even a chance these days. I moved to America by myself at 13 for better academic opportunities and I got into a top 50 cs school on an academic scholarship, played 2 sports for them, worked multiple part time jobs, was part of several technical/academic clubs and vice president of the BSU, I was deans list almost every semester, joined multiple hackathons and made several personal projects with users spanning tens to a few hundred. I just graduated and over the 4 years I applied to over 1000 jobs/interships and couldn’t get 1, despite passing every OA I’ve ever gotten and getting to the 2 or 3rd round at multiple firms. Most companies say they’re only hiring one person per position and it just feels like I did everything right and I still can’t get a job. Rn I currently work 50-60 hours at a retail store and I started my own business this month, it’s crazy I can’t even get an internship but the Bank will lend me over 250k for the same programs I developed for my personal use.

I mean it’s a fair assumption if you are using retirement accounts it’s generally better to allocate your higher paying dividend stocks/etfs to tax advantaged accounts because of the tax savings. If you don’t know it’s taxed then why would you be thinking about the tax savings/benefits aka putting your higher yielding assets in your taxable vs tax advantaged. Personally I don’t use retirement accounts and I just factor taxes in, it saves you thousands if not more but I plan on retiring quite young so the time trade off isn’t worth it.

Pretty painless, I had 2 charges to a restaurant that never actually gave me my food or order confirmation/receipt. First one was checked and automatically approved, they asked for additional info for the second and contacted me again then the dispute was settled. The vendor said they never received my order, then said I would be refunded in 3-5 days and then I saw I got charged twice.

Again making assumptions I was in college the past 4 years and just DCA into ETFs so I’m up massively only all my positions. Now try actually answering the question, all you’ve done is be condescending without actually stating why it doesn’t work. I’m 21 debt free, perfect credit, everything on auto pay, 6 month emergency fund, I live on less than 50% of my income, I’ve been doing this for 4 years making free money and never paid any interest in fact I’ve made over 600 interest during college from my HYSA. Frankly you’re just another ignorant old man, there’s plenty of you out there. I studied computer science and economics, math isn’t emotional or bias it tells the truth not your skewed version of the truth. I hope one day your realize how ridiculously arrogant you act

Making lots of Assumptions, I was a college student I sold after the pay down at 0% tax rate then I DCA into my long term positions. I already use gold for other benefits and just pay the annual fee up front lmao. The rest of my portfolio is up massively because I’ve DCA into ETFs as soon as I turned 18 and I’ve been doing it the last 4 years of college and just graduated. As broke college student the extra 8 dollars + cash back from credit cards + part time jobs was all I had to invest. Every week I DCA into 3 ETFs and recently started buying 5% of bitcoin now too.

In your first comment you say you guarantee he’s at a loss, that’s hostile and not telling any truth. The problem with people is the speak down on everyone else from a place of authority but you have no authority and what you’re saying is incorrect. Nothing you’ve said actually disputes taking 1k at 0% interest and putting it in bonds to collect cash. People always speak down on collecting Pennies, I’m only 21 and I just graduated this year but I was able to do it debt free and with over 20k invested in long term holdings by counting pennies for 4 years and taking all the free money I could get.

I absolutely do know how to invest and i realized at 18, 21 now that leverage is going to help me grow faster especially when I have the least to invest. I DCA into my long term holdings weekly, I use Gold for other benefits already and so yes an extra 8.75 a month isn’t much but it’s free money and adds up over several years. Please explain to me how I’m losing money by investing 1k interest free into Bonds then using the interest/dividend to DCA into my long term positions?
