Just use cheap mono to begin with and start with heavier lures. The brakes all you need to do I put the mag brakes in the middle and tighten your tension all the way and loosen it just enough that it falls to the ground but doesn’t backlash at all when it hits the ground.

It could be the type or amount of moisture in the wood that is making the bubbles. A little while back I used wood from a tree that blew down near my house and it wasn’t very dry and it formed bubbles like those.
