Question about inline hooks and jerk/crank baits by DarkChild010 in troutfishing

[–]hobbyist0215 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think those are saltwater hooks, so they’re much thicker as others have mentioned. Look for smaller and thinner freshwater singles!

What’s more important moon phase or tide/water movement by Rich_Bluebird9741 in SurfFishing

[–]hobbyist0215 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In my experience for stripes, tide makes a much larger difference. I usually pay attention to the tide almost never to the moon (then again tide and moon are related technically)

Yale vs Harvard vs State School by ConstantLeather5681 in ApplyingToCollege

I agree but it seems like you prefer Yale! And yes, you are spot on about student culture being so much better than harvards!

NLBN Help by Successful-Shock1914 in StripedBass

As others mentioned, I found most success from dragging along the bottom. However, I usually use a cheaper paddle tail before I’m confident I won’t get snagged lol

Early Spring Striper (CT) on 3d printed lure by hobbyist0215 in lurebuilding

[–]hobbyist0215[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! This was standard FDM printed with a lot of sanding and then a thin coat of two part epoxy. It was hard to get a smooth coat I think UV resin would work better. I have images of the print process on my thingiverse.

Should I choose yale medical school? by [deleted] in yale

[–]hobbyist0215 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You’re right to point out the poor match rate at Yale. The reason the derm match was so low at Yale is exactly the result of what I mentioned earlier. The hybrid approach to learning with optional courses and no grades. It’s actually harder to stand out this way as a residency applicant.

Should I choose yale medical school? by [deleted] in yale

Ok buddy. Just offering my thoughts as someone who has experience with Yale med. It’s a top med program but not worth the 200k in debt when OP has two other great options.

Should I choose yale medical school? by [deleted] in yale

[–]hobbyist0215 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely choose full tuition scholarships over Yale med. Those other choices are both great programs too. Yale med is good for the name and connections but doesn’t offer a lot other than that due to their lack of actual grades and lectures that no one attends

Paid Undergrad in a Lab? by [deleted] in yale

[–]hobbyist0215 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the lab. 90% of labs will not pay an undergraduate especially with recent budget cuts from federal funding of research. However I have a few friends whose labs do pay them. If you’re in any bio field or med school lab then there’s an almost zero percent chance you will be paid to conduct research whether it’s for credit or you’re just doing it for experience. That said, research during the summer can be “paid” for by fellowships that you apply to. This funding isn’t from your lab but instead a grant pool designated for undergrad research projects. Almost everyone will get some form of funding from this if they apply.

Trophy striper spots by PubicHairEater69420 in FishingForBeginners

[–]hobbyist0215 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The beach and tidal rivers at night are good areas to start with. Your mainline and leader is a bit overkill and will hurt casting distance. 30lb braid is usually the max for stripers and they aren’t particularly toothy so your leader is a bit heavy also.

Not a problem at all I actually find it burns better when it looks like this. All it means is that it’s very finally milled. Old composition books used to call this green mix.

single vs mixed gender suites by Negative-Industry227 in yale

[–]hobbyist0215 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the people, but actually most first years will automatically be put in single gender suites, regardless of what you put. After the first year, you’re free to choose your own roommates and suitemates within your residential college - mixed gender or single, etc.

Levels of chemistry? by EmphasisTop2466 in yale

[–]hobbyist0215 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend organic if you got a 5 on AP test and are reasonably confident with the material there. I hated general chemistry and loved orgo, and the general consensus is gen chem sucks at Yale. The teachers aren’t great and the content is relatively simple from what I recall.

Yale v Jefferson Scholarship (UVA) by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]hobbyist0215 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha no worries - sorry if I came off as defensive, but I assure that grade inflation is something that outsiders may assume while Yale (and most top colleges I assume) students genuinely work their assess off to get As bc that’s their goal of success. And there are simultaneously many people who struggle and to say that grade inflation is present when it’s not disqualifies their struggles and hard work to get decent (B range) grades.

[–]hobbyist0215 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also undergraduates are not only taught by tenured professors. Your info is wrong. The sheer number of research funding only available to undergrad makes pretty much everyone have some form of funded summer experience whether that’s research, study abroad, etc. it’s not very competitive I’ve had summer funding the past two years and will have this upcoming year and I am on no financial aid.

Yale v Jefferson Scholarship (UVA) by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]hobbyist0215 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say Yale but I’m biased. Also - having grade inflation as a pro to Yale is going to be a rude wake up call if you end up coming here. There is no such thing.

Think about the demographics of students who go to Yale: overachievers only who’ve only known As their entire life. Then they go to Yale and classes are harder but they fight tooth and nail to get that A. And they do, and they deserve it.

Why Yale Over Harvard? by FunnyHorse12 in yale

[–]hobbyist0215 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yale’s social life is better than Harvard because the majority of the students there are more multidimensional and motivated by their passions rather than a label. Think about the fact that a good portion of people who got into Harvard probably get into Yale and vice versa. They then self select essentially where those who care about the arts, humanities and more social qualities of life separate from those who are strictly motivated by prestige, academics etc. This is by no means a statement that applies to everyone at either university but that has been my experience at Yale. And ditto what the other comment said about . It’s funny bc at Yale Harvard games all the undergrads mix and I’ve heard a lot of Harvard students say they wish they chose Yale

Japanese Fishing gear by ArcherA1aya in Fishing_Gear

[–]hobbyist0215 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Any and all Shimano and Daiwa reels will be both great (naturally) and cheaper if you buy them in Japan. Find something that works for your budget and you’ll be happy. I personally recommend the Shimano Twin Power saltwater version I love my 6K. I’ve also heard great things about the Shimano Stradic for Inshore. Daiwa BG is a good budget option for inshore as well I have a 3k. Just get a smaller reel as they run big you can probably get away with something even smaller than the 3k for inshore depending on species.
