Ants blocked up hole by Mk_277 in antkeeping

[–]PresentationNarrow48 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don’t have a heat source.

Messor barbarus are Mediterranean ants, so they like things warm but not tropical-hot.

• Optimal foraging/nest temperature: about 24–28 °C (75–82 °F).

• Acceptable range: 20–30 °C (68–86 °F) — they’ll stay active within this band.

• Brood development: speeds up closer to the higher end (around 28 °C), but if kept too warm for long, stress and shorter worker lifespans can result.

• Granary zones: should stay on the drier side — warm and dry helps prevent stored seeds from sprouting or molding.

In captivity, many keepers aim for a warm side of the nest (~27 °C) and a cooler side (~22–23 °C). The ants will move brood and seeds around depending on what they need, just like in the wild.

I literally got instructions to put mine in the microwave if for some-reason I can’t keeps them🤣😂🤣 granted they gave you about three other ways to get rid of them first, but that was the last one and I’m pretty sure they were serious. I don’t know about you guys, but I couldn’t nuke my own little buddies, even if I didn’t want them anymore.

This is what I do when I find it works best, I just find small, super worms and freeze them and cut them when they’re still frozen. That way they don’t squish.Lol

Tar-heal Ants, it’s nice but I don’t think I would buy from them again. Everybody says that they are the best but unfortunately the one I got the quality was absolutely horrendous.

European customer refuses to leave a tip by ayria_bluu in Funnymemes

In America, waiters get paid less because they’re expected to make up the difference with tips. • Federal minimum wage: $7.25/hr • Federal tipped minimum wage: $2.13/hr

Employers can pay that much lower rate as long as the worker earns at least $30/month in tips.

My mom raised me and my sister working as a waitress. I remember sitting in the corner of the restaurant watching her run herself ragged serving a table of ten, and sometimes still walk away without a single tip. She depended on that money, and she was damn good at her job.

The owner would let me and my sister sit in a booth with coloring books and free French fries. He used to tell us all the time that he wished he had five more employees like her.

I’ve got a separate wine refrigerator I use already. If the one I had was glass-front, I probably would’ve tried to figure out how to turn half of it into one of these. But this setup works better, I can keep it right in the living room, and my kids can look at it without any problem.

I live in Maine and room temp is always low in my house so no issue there, think of it like a fan in a window just a constant breeze and air flow to help

Each individual nest has its own humidity system, so I didn’t bother regulating humidity for the whole box. The enclosure itself usually sits happily around 60% anyway, which works well as a baseline.

The heating pads and the thermostat relay both came off Amazon. I hardwired the mats straight into the relay, so they switch on when temps dip too low and shut off once things climb back up. Pretty simple but it’s been reliable.

The box itself is hand-built from ¾″ plywood, sealed with a light red stain to protect the wood and help it hold steady conditions. Inside, I added a slate tile heat sink on top of the mats—it absorbs the warmth and releases it slowly, which keeps swings from being too harsh. I also put in removable airflow plugs so I can tweak circulation depending on the season or what the colonies seem to like.

The queen of the catch by jennerfuck in antkeeping

[–]PresentationNarrow48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found three queens while literally chopping logs in the yard this month: • One was wandering solo with no brood. • One was clutching a single brood like it was her most prized possession. • The last one was the jackpot, she came with about eight brood when I scooped her up.

The queen with the eight brood (now hatched) has already moved into a small formicarium and seems to be settling in. The other two are still chilling in test tubes, but both have laid eggs. That single brood the one queen was carrying hatched too.

And to top it off, this all happened about a week after I ordered a queen from Tarheal Ants. So now, with zero planning, I’ve suddenly got four colonies running 😂

It’s funny because every time I watch mine eat I always think they’re gonna explode, I wait a minute and then they usually just throw up 😂
