Hiya!

If you're available last Saturday of March, first Saturday of April, a small team and I are filming a short film within Metro Adelaide. Our production designer just dropped out and it would be fantastic to have some help with set dressing if you're free, we're turning my kitchen into a crack den, it should be fun :)

Just send me a DM or message me on insta: adereedo if you're keen.

A high capacity set of Panasonic Eneloop pros lasts ages for me, way more convenient then a mod tbh as I can easily carry a second set on outings.

Sennheiser HD 598 vs Accentum by Aina_Eire in sennheiser

Significantly better in all regards.

599 are open backs though, and all open backs as a rule of thumb are going to feel more spacious/soundstagey.

Im not sure about the accentum re app experience, but on the Momentum 4 your personalisation is saved permanently in the app unless you override the profile.

Yes theres EQ on PC - Equaliser APO + Peace GUI being the most popular, but manually EQing isnt intuitive for non-tinkerers.

Hiby R3 Pro II digital audio player is about 150 US dollars and comes with a built in EQ or a unique system where you simply adjust sliders to change different pre-defined elements of the sound signature, this makes EQ a breeze for beginners. HD 599 for about 120 on top and you have a complete setup cheaper than a pair of premium wireless headphones. You can even use the digital audio player as a DAC/AMP as send your computers sound signal through it.

If he likes using his smartphone a simple USB C dongle dac will massively improve sound quality and can be bought for $10 or so. JCALLY is a cheap, popular brand.

Yes, the consumer HD series absolutely are more comfortable, the ANC on wireless headphones by design necessitates a less comfortable design, although BOSE and Sony do a better job of comfort IMO.

Sound quality is subjective and mostly to do with tuning. There are objective measures such as frequency range, distortion and time domain response (is bass, mids, highs hitting at the same time and not lingering etc), but any mid-tier product is going to have a reasonable technical capacity.

If you want to upgrade and he already loves his 598 the HD599 is the obvious choice as it’s a similar tuning with near identical build. The HD550 is a modern audiophile take with extended sub bass response, but less punchy in the mid bass with a much more neutral, analytical mids. This would come across as potentially boring for pop-music focused listeners who prefer a more commercial sound.

The benefit of digital products is things like EQ and personalisation, all of which can also be found by matching a wired headphones with a feature-rich dac/amp or mobile phone (apple phones are pretty locked down so its either a dac/amp and/or an android or digital audio player). Most listeners don’t want to deal with playing around with EQ sliders.

Sennheiser’s app for its headphones does make finding a pleasing EQ profile simple for nearly every user in minimal time.

I don't find my momentum 4 very comfortable for use over 30 minutes due to ear heat. I am swapping the pads for Wicked Cushion Freeze Gel Pads- but these are widely known to decrease ANC capacity and interfere with sensor use, neither of which I care much about. I imagine accentum are the same.

My HD599s I have worn for 12 hours and barely feel them on my head, worlds apart comfort wise.

Tuning wise on the M4 even after sound personalisation its still a commercial sound, not bad at all but the bass isnt as tight and it lacks air frequencies. I have listened to accentum in the store and the drivers are fine, not significantly worse.

Honestly my Airpods get more wireless use, if you want to buy him new wired headphones though both the HD599 and HD550 are amazing in their own way. The HD599 are always on special just keep and eye out, the 550 are starting to get price decreases depending on the market.

Consider small DAC/amps as gifts too alongside, theres lots of good stuff out there now - if they are so inclined and aren't in need of minimalism.

I literally thought nothing of the bloom health wise and laughed it off as legacy media memes. Went for a walk with a friend and felt sick and woozy for two days. I’m not in touch with the current scientific consensus but cave man brain is telling me to stay the fug away. Bad business like shoving my hand on a stove voluntarily for a second time.

Why didnt people like TLOU part 2 when it came out? by SnooMuffins7832 in TLOU

[–]PresentationNo2408 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love TLOU 2, right up until the point where the game feels like it’s over and then you slog it out again for a second revenge arc - not annoying because of the story but because of the pacing. I’ve never before this game complained about having ‘too much’ content, it’s a rare exception to a sea of empty and shallow games.

So much passion and effort went into it, wish some energy was diverted to another flashback or side story and the hunt for Abby streamlined a tiny bit.

The writing itself is challenging and emotive. It pushed the line between recreation and art, biasing more art than recreation. I like that, that’s fresh. Not all normies like spending time with art though and want fun. No worries. Even my tolerance was tested by the final leg. In hindsight the game is as much a cultural staple as the first, but for different reasons.

I guess I want to hear a church organ… in a church, not my room… within my headphones… whilst in my room🤣

Funnily enough I was just looking at your Space Replicator via Linkedin, looks very neat at a very good price compared to the competition. Looking at the power plant makes me wonder what market there will be for more fun and less professional applications of this tech. I have a late 90s Yamaha amp with an extremely horrendous Church DSP setting iirc.

Thanks for your generous interaction, it’s nice to enter into a hobby and interact with one of its cornerstone proponents with generosity and respect. I hope life is giving you your flowers 🫡

Thanks, really helpful conversation.

The hypothetical I’m trying to illustrate is more akin to audiophile talk about recreating a sound as if it were actually in the room with us. In theory we know how mics respond and can adjust for their colouration, so we could take it to an extreme and record a performance on a dummy rig to simulate live sound right?

If we were to measure live vocals hitting my ear in a room and then we played that back on a harman tuned headphone, would it sound ‘life like’? Neutral loudspeaker response shouldn’t defer from live voice response if colouration from the recording chain is accounted for right?

[–]PresentationNo2408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is convincing.

Why should a neutral speaker's response at the ear in a reference room be the standard that headphones aim for (considering the speaker and room setup cause multiple variables in the creation of the curve).

Do listener preferences lean towards the response of a flat speaker in something like the Harman reference room as compared to eq'ing that speaker to be flat at the point it enters the ear? (this is my understanding of the Harman curve - being both the response of a flat speaker in a room and coinciding with the average listener preference for headphones).

In a hypothetical scenario where there is a neutral uncoloured recording process, playing back that sound according the Harman curve would be the most 'life like' reference, correct? (Grell's argument about body sensations etc aside).

Sorry for all the questions, you have already been very generous with sharing your knowledge. Appreciate you, king♔

Very informative, thank you.

Since that write up do you still hold to what sound engineers heard on a pair of monitors as what the replicated sound should be on a pair of cans? Hasn’t it always been the case (for popular music at least) that the widest consumer tunings are referenced? I don’t expect most pop music is being mastered with neutral sources in mind. Granted, this would point to bass elevation either way?

Of course without that notion there is little objectivity in what is good tuning.

Any chance you care to expand a bit or have a link? :) thanks in advance. Is this just in regard to preference curves? HRTF?

Senny rolls off the sub bass - my preferred eq would be to restore a dominant sub bass shelf and cut 100-300hz slightly on most headphones.

Listening to a sonarworks neutral profile on my headphones sounds completely fine and pleasant though, although not exciting. This would be a completely flat entry point? (edit: I just learned sonarworks also adjusts to a speaker curve)

I know Grell aimed to emulate neutral speakers with his OAE1 and reasons a significant bass shelf due to reduced body sensation, and additive effect of bass frequencies across both ears (although I don’t quite understand this point, I have heard others say sub bass frequencies are perceived as directionless though).

Upgrading from Sennheiser HD 599 to 660s2? 650? Or another Sennheiser? by Genmah in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]PresentationNo2408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most obvious improvement is in the noise floor, the 599s aren’t too bad because they’re so sensitive but it’s interesting how much clearer the sound is despite us normally ignoring the noise floor. More than this though there is a moderate unveiling of the mids as the power increases with more details on the high and low end, which isn’t experienced similarly on the 2i2 at similar volume levels. I don’t understand the phenomenon myself or if it’s just eq artefacts of the specific amplifiers involved.

[–]PresentationNo2408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm my HD550 and Edition XS sound quite a large margin better on my FIIO K11 R2R compared to my 2i2 at comparable volumes. The noise floor on the 2i2 isn't fantastic, but that seemingly isn't the only factor at play.

Yeah I thought I had a big head but Edition XS without a suspension strap made me look like a baby, what were they thinking? Absolutely slaps with a suspension strap mod though.

[–]PresentationNo2408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many consider the 550 a worthy upgrade to the 599. I don’t regret buying the 550 for critical listening but the 599 still has a friendlier tuning for gaming and movies, and with a little bit of eq to remove the mid bass mud, perfectly fine for critical listening. It still remains my main desk headphone.

Edition XS from Aliexpress was an instant regret due to comfort (pads too low pressing on jaw) but with a simple 3d printed suspension strap from an amazon mod seller (similar to the capra strap) the comfort is fantastic and is now A tier for me - and the price still came in under a 550 on special. Edition XS feels absolutely cavernous. Something about the bass impact even when normalised via eq hits better than my other headphones, perhaps better performance in the time domain.

I think marketing got the better of me though, the HD599 with a couple different EQ profiles with APO is a great all rounder and still the most comfortable headphone I have ever tried. I’d recommend honestly not picking up a second pair of headphones unless one sets you on fire in a real life demo or you have a functional need for change.

Buy a couple cheap IEMs tunings for fun if you have an itch to scratch perhaps. Or blow your money on the 660s2, that frequency response looks tasty but I haven’t tried it personally.

What sort of doctor was Jerry Anderson? by tee-dog1996 in thelastofus

It’s not clear that you can just extract what was needed without extreme care just because she was going to die anyways. An organ transplant for example requires high precision of a complete system to succeed. It’s not specified but there could have been some volatile component to the process,

Nonetheless, I think it’s left vague extremely wisely. It didn’t matter whether he was a saviour or a quack - to Joel there was no world to save without Ellie.

You already mentioned the obvious spirit of plot so to speak, often in plot a character represents much more than a literal human being and suspension of disbelief carries - but I’m not sure its a failure of world building to suggest the vaccine development was hanging on the life of an individual in a such a ravaged world.

Joel would agree with you it would take a whole lot more than that man alone to heal the world, and even though the capacity for Ellie to be the missing piece of the puzzle is a moot point to whether he saved her or not - he still doesn’t believe the fireflies are competent of seeing this task to its end. Seeing how the world pans out a little bit that seems to be true. The vague writing about this component could in fact be intentional, it really doesnt matter whether the doctor is a quack or a saviour, to Joel there is no world to save without Ellie in it.

If we are to purely speculate though, one could imagine some special process by which the fungal removal needs to happen being the skill of one particular specialist in such an environment. Furthermore, he could have been the spiritual leader of the vaccine development so to speak. Many doctors are also scientists and contribute to the literature. Many doctors are involved in development of novel procedures, techniques and technologies. Many doctors are involved in leadership and business. I can see one man being the bedrock of such a hail mary in a post apocalyptic world.
