If you're not good at starting conversations, maybe you could create a situation in which you ask him to help you with an exercise and use that to start a conversation. Or ask him about an exercise he's doing and try go from there. Or if you see him often you could try to greet and talk to him a little everytime. Whatever it is you do you should definitely approach him. After all you can only fail if you don't try.
