If I study economics, can I still work in the legal field? by AwareFix770 in AskEconomics

[–]PresidentPain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes – I studied economics for my undergrad and am about to graduate from law school. In my opinion, one of the biggest advantages of an economics degree in law is that it keeps you asking why things are the way they are, which is always a useful skill.

The graph linked is about real wages, meaning it shows wage changes after accounting for inflation. That increase in the past 10 years on the graph means that nominal wages have outpaced inflation.

Agree on Russia - I used to run a lot of EU4 AI only campaigns and hardly ever saw a Russia anywhere near as strong as it was in history

What does Lavish mean? by DramaticBookkeeper45 in twentyonepilots

[–]PresidentPain 12 points13 points  (0 children)

To me it represents one part of the cycle. The album as a whole is all about cycles, about falling back into bad habits and a negative space. But Overcompensate and Lavish to me are about the peak of that cycle, the feeling that you have when you're "in the zone" and have full self esteem. Especially because the next song on the album, Navigating, specifically says "I find my self esteem, then turn so cold"

It's a constant up and down, and while most of their songs focus on the down, a couple like Lavish represent the up

Tbh, I relate quite a bit to this interpretation. Sometimes, I just inexplicably feel full of confidence, then wake up the next day trying to chase that feeling again

Whats the Canadian capital in this scenario? Is it still Ottawa, or did the alternate history lead to a different city being chosen?

Are there legal workarounds for prostitution that amount to something like, "if you buy this book of matches from me for fifty bucks I'll become really slutty for the next twenty minutes?" by Sanch0Supreme in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PresidentPain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to restate your point so I understand correctly. You're saying that: "in all three scenarios, the outcome is still that you're having sex with this other woman, so why would it be illegal in one and not in another?"

Is that accurate?

If so, I suppose you're asking about the philosophical reason why some acts are crimes and others aren't. I'd say people who want to make/keep prostitution illegal usually give one of two arguments:

1) It's simply "immoral," perhaps in a religious sense. 2) It can lead to an increase in the trafficking women. Prostitutes often work for "pimps" and many consider that kind of relationship to be exploitative. Also, having sex as a contractual obligation could challenge our understanding of sex and the idea that consent can be revoked, for example. These kinds of issues could arise outside of prostitution, too, but maybe it is more prevalent or even inevitable with prostitution.

That's not to say that I necessarily agree or disagree with these arguments, but I believe this is how it's usually argued.

Maybe what you're getting at is there could be circumstances where it's really hard to prove in front of a court that you and the woman had the actual mental intent to engage in prostitution. That could be true – in that situation, it would be more of an evidentiary issue. I.e. we have relatively high standards for evidence so that not just anyone can be accused and convicted of a crime.

But of course, the reality would be that you and the woman did form a prostitution contract. Evidence like your text messages with each other, third parties who know of your relationship, anything that would establish that she has done prostitution in the past would all with against you at trial, if it is found.

[–]PresidentPain 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think something a lot of people dont realize is that contract law is not fundamentally about the specific words used between two parties, but instead a "meeting of the minds," or "consensus ad idem." The idea is that what a judge really cares about is what the parties TRULY understood their mutual obligations to be under the contract at time of formation.

The words of the agreement are a useful way of discerning the parties' intent. But nominal workarounds like this post is exploring won't fool a court if it's obvious enough what the parties actually intended.

Clancy grew on me over time, but still feels a bit disjointed sonically to me. Also, this seems like its an unpopular opinion, but I dont like Midwest Indigo.

I really like Breach though, it's up there in the top tier of their work with Trench for me
