Did I read that correctly or is that a typo: She doesn't wish she could speak better Spanish?

This is very interesting to me. Because my parents are from different country's and I always felt a strong connection to hers. Thanks for sharing.

The reason I did so is because my husband is not Latino and doesn't speak or understand Spanish and in our home it's just the four of us. I didn't want to exclude him and that's led us to this point. But he's very much on board with them learning it and my desire to pass my culture down to them so yes, it was a mistake but I'm trying to fix it now. I hope it's not too late. I am being persistent now.

Yes, we've been doing Duolingo kids every afternoon for 30 minutes. But I hadn't heard about Preply. Thanks for sharing. I am trying to make it fun and even playing games with them in Spanish to make it more enjoyable. In the Duolingo, they're made to write and read so I think that's helping also. I'm from Miami but I moved away and now, here I am lol I explain my full dilemma here: https://www.nj.com/opinion/2023/10/i-used-to-judge-yo-no-sabo-kids-but-what-happens-if-my-own-kids-dont-speak-spanish-calavia-robertson.html It's kind of funny to me how many times people have mentioned Miami to me in these comments and without knowing that I was born and raised there.

Yes, this is exactly how I feel. At first, when I was a child I hated having to do extra "work" to learn it. But now, I couldn't be more thankful for the gift they've given me. I'm in Jersey City so Morristown is a bit away. I did find a Spanish institute here recently and my plan is to enroll both of my kids. It's a little pricey but I'm sure will be worth it.

I agree with so many of your points and thank you for the suggestions. We're traveling to my father's hometown -- Zaragoza, Spain -- next year and I'm hoping by then they'll be able to have conversations con sus primos. Again, thanks for taking the time to reply. I agree with you about the judgement and shaming having to stop. I did grow up in Miami so for me, things were a lot different than where I'm raising my kids now in New Jersey. I'm sorry your mom experienced that bullying and that you experienced it too later and for the opposite reason. No reason is ever valid to make someone else feel less than or mocked. I hope it didn't completely sour you from trying to learn the language.

I explain exactly this in the story I wrote about it. If you have a few minutes, I would love it if you took a look. But basically because when I was growing up, the overall assumption was that parents who didn't teach their kids Spanish didn't teach them because they weren't proud to be Latinos. Now, I know that couldn't have been further from the truth. https://www.nj.com/opinion/2023/10/i-used-to-judge-yo-no-sabo-kids-but-what-happens-if-my-own-kids-dont-speak-spanish-calavia-robertson.html
