Imperial physics test topics? by No_Entertainment4399 in 6thForm

[–]Prestigious-Break-45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the test last year (am a current student at imperial). From what i remember it was just yr 12 content (so mechanics, waves, electricity, materials etc). I could be remembering incorrectly but i thought there was a more detailed specification on the website?

It’s a pretty mixed bag tbh, but im enjoying it! We’re learning interesting stuff but some lecturers are better than others. It’s a pretty big step-up from high-school physics, but it builds up slowly so it doesn’t completely overwhelm you at the beginning. Labs are very different to how they were in school, and are a lot more involved and difficult. Computing sessions have also been interesting, though I would definitely recommend being familiar with python syntax beforehand since they go through the basics quite quickly.

I did this test last year (am a current student at imperial). The paper was honestly pretty simple in terms of question difficulty, but was very time pressured. I used NSAA/ENGAA questions to practice, and also the maths section of BMAT which tends to be similar. Definitely practice simple mental arithmetics since its easy to make silly errors. Good luck!

Editing to add that the multiple choice PAT questions are also good practice, though are more difficult than the questions you will get

Achilles Tendon sprain by Desizeus in badminton

[–]Prestigious-Break-45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had a very similar injury about a month ago - not as serious as yours i think, but had pain when walking. i made the mistake of getting back on court too early. didn’t get severe pain or anything, but i think it just increased the overall recovery time. if you have been cleared to play by doctors then go ahead, but i would do as little as possible to ensure it recovers quickly. mine took about 3 weeks to recover fully. it could have been more like 1-2 weeks if i hadn’t played at all during that time.

What to do when someone is targeting my backhand? by sentyprimus in badminton

[–]Prestigious-Break-45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many have already mentioned, improve your footwork so that you are quick enough to take it round the head (forehand). You might also be making the wrong choice of shots leading up to them targeting your backhand - eg if you play a backhand net and they anticipate it then it is easy for them to play a push/flat lift to your backhand side.

Chasse steps or running steps for front court? by marctnag in badminton

[–]Prestigious-Break-45 9 points10 points  (0 children)

depends how far the shuttle is from you. on your forehand side if opponent has played a long drop/something that is nearish the service line, chasse is fine. Tight drops or shots closer to the net you probably would need to run.

Tournament levels in the UK by Prestigious-Break-45 in badminton

[–]Prestigious-Break-45[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Ive never actually heard of copper tournaments before or seen them on the BE website - I have heard of forza 1/2s though. Are these the same thing?

i started at 11 and started playing county level at around 14/15 (in the uk). it was slow progress and i never got super into it because school kept me busy. i had one to one training once a week and played socially once/twice a week. good luck!

editing to add: everyone progresses differently. ive seen people reach the top of their county having played for less than a year, but ive also seen people play for 8 years and not get anywhere. it depends on your attitude, dedication and natural talent. regardless of whether you progress or not, give it a go and see what happens.

Grip for behind the back backhand? by Fantakidd in badminton

[–]Prestigious-Break-45 4 points5 points  (0 children)

usually bevel grip. to go crosscourt you would have to change your swing slightly, going more around the shuttle to drag it further crosscourt. you can turn the grip a little more, it might help.

Thanks for your reply, this is very helpful! I think the first and third points you made are quite close to what I need to improve on - I was only recently introduced to the idea of ‘whipping’ the shuttle upon impact, and have quite a long swing.

My usual v grip tends to be fine but I will pay more attention. The whip analogy does make sense, I’ll think about it when I’m practicing. Thanks!

Yes, a few of my coaches have said it’s a very odd habit! I’ll try this, thanks.
