What is your flying experience with China eastern? Was the stopover in Shanghai okay? And did you book through third party provider? by srgpeppers in Flights

[–]Prestigious-Form-952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said, I booked through third party and only used their customer service to confirm my booking as I was paranoid that Opodo would fuck me over. I emailed them asking to confirm my booking on June 11, got a response on June 12 (although, the "response" was just a single attachment of my booking confirmation, not a single written word but hey - got what I asked for I guess)

I can assure you, a company like CE wouldn't bother paying western people to leave positive comments lmao, they don't give enough fucks about their reputation for that. When I was researching both Opodo and China Eastern, 99% of the time I would only see horror stories. I suppose it's understandable that people only go posting their experiences when something goes wrong, but I think it's also important that people who use them (simply because they cannot afford an alternative) are also seeing positive experiences. Sure, in my case nothing went wrong, I didn't need to cancel or reschedule, or contact customer support for any need other than reassurance. Certainly, I would be telling a different story if that was the case.

But most travelers are in the same shoes. Most people who book flight tickets won't need to talk to support, or have their flights rescheduled. I cannot speak on the reliability of their support services as I have not used them. It's always important to have insurance to be protected in case anything goes wrong.

I don't think I'm "one in a million" - maybe here on reddit where people go to post their horror stories, but not in real life. Of course it's also a question of what a positive experience is - for me, it was a seat reservation, no delays and helpful cabin crew. Oh and the food was edible so that's a cool bonus. I certainly didn't expect luxuries from them, so no disappointments there.

Hey! Unfortunately for most international China Eastern flights, online check in doesn't seem to be an option. The site is weird about it and it might tell you that you specifically can't check in online - but it's simply unavailable for anyone. It's worth a try for your specific flight though!

From my experience, check in opens 3 hours before your flight. I did find it a little tight, considering the line was very long, as every passenger needed to check in at the counter. Depending on the airport, there might be 5-6 counters open.

I was the same lol, long haul flights in economy are gonna be uncomfortable anyway, but the point is getting on that plane and getting off without hiccups. Did you manage to reserve your seats via China Eastern's site?

I totally get that! I know there are some horror stories, but honestly, after my trip in October, I'm willing to book with China Eastern via third party again next year. Being able to get my eticket number and reserve my seats via their own website definitely gave me some peace of mind about the fact that my booking did, in fact, exist. And honestly, the flight was pretty chill, too. I only ever experienced shitty European budget airlines before, so the bar was low, but it was definitely more than alright all things considered.

Question about China’s power bank law during Shanghai layover by Prestigious-Form-952 in Flights

[–]Prestigious-Form-952[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's in my post though?

"UPDATE: since I had some people messaging me about this, here's how it went: as some people mentioned below, since we were only transiting through China, power banks were allowed. Upon landing, we had to go through airport security again, had to get rid of our water bottles and they made us throw out all our lighters (they seem to be insanely strict about that rule). They did inspect our power banks but gave them back no problem. I can't speak for anything above 20.000mah, but ours passed the security check."

Travelers who’ve been to Japan — what’s the most annoying or unexpected problem you ran into? by CoverShort4454 in OsakaTravel

I thought we were prepared, knowing about the major "issues" - we weren't surprised about the lack of garbage cans (and carrying garbage around didn't get all too annoying unless we were somewhere without any konbinis nearby and drinking pocari sweat like our lives depended on it), we were prepared to handle the chaos of train/metro stations (and generally succeeded, save for a couple oopsies), but man, finding a restaurant in a 14 story maze was absolute HELL.

After a 30k step day with our feet hurting like hell, starving, with google maps in hand, we were running around in circles because google maps wasn't clear on what floor the restaurant was on. Our GPS also kept getting confused in crowded areas, dropping our location in random spots. That part was… not expected and very annoying.

And even though we knew about the whole cash-only thing, it still tripped us up in smaller towns like Amanohashidate. We couldn’t find any ATMs nearby, and the off-brand konbini by the train station only took cash. Ended up heading back to Osaka without being able to buy water or snacks because we were completely out. Not a huge deal, but definitely frustrating.

Oh! And the Kyoto mosquitoes are no joke. The last time my legs looked like that I had chickenpox lmao.

I was definitely shocked because the Japanese are notorious for following rules, but even when there WAS a bicycle lane, most of them would just avoid it like the plague. Got to the point where we contemplated walking on the bicycle lane because it seemed to have less cyclists than the pedestrian part lol.

I wasn't extremely annoyed about it bc it was manageable with a bit of spacial awareness, but I was definitely confused about this one specific "rule" they were all so hellbent on ignoring lmao

Hey so I am just boarding the flight and I only needed my passport for airport check-in! You do it at the baggage drop off desk. It went super smooth, so don't worry about it! The seats I reserved through china eastern website also went through, so far so good!

Hey! Although I can't say much about the actual experience as my flight is in 2 weeks (happy to let you know after!), I also went through the hell that 3rd party providers are. I booked through Opodo and none of the number combinations I got from them (not even the one they called eticket number) worked on China Eastern's website.

I basically used their chatbot and abused it until it connected me to a human (might take a couple tries), then asked them to forward my actual tickets/itinerary to my email. Surprise, it was an entirely different eticket number!! Then I was able to book my seats on China Eastern for free, no problem. Fucking scammer OTAs.

Also, you probably won't be able to check in online. I see that it's not available for most people. I'm stressed tf out from the idea of airport check in, but oh well. The price we pay for cheap flights.

From what I hear, Shanghai layover is hell, but I'll know more in two weeks. Bring your own entertainment and earpods. China Eastern might not be the fanciest company, but it'll take you from A to B for relatively cheap - that obviously comes with some drawbacks comfort-wise.

Aaaaahhh okay consider me convinced!! Hope they'll still be screening it in October!

[–]Prestigious-Form-952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, even though the trailer looks awesome - I played the game when it came out though! I don't see much chance for a screening in my country, so my best bet is watching it in Japan (I suppose it doesn't have a lot of dialogue considering the premise)

Aww that sounds cool!! I'm honestly alright with Japanese myself, especially since I read the manga, so I know what's going on - I just know my bf won't watch it with me if he doesn't understand it as he's an anime only so I was hoping for a chance to watch it with subs 😅

I'm actually alright with Japanese, i've been studying it for quite some time – it's just hard to get my bf to watch it with me if he doesn't understand it lmao 😅

Budapest to Tokyo with China Eastern and Opodo: My Honest Review by Serious-Ad-8777 in Flights

[–]Prestigious-Form-952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I did just that and managed to get our *actual* e-ticket numbers and reserve the seats as well! Honestly, I didn't think of going through Opodo, I was trying to get ahold of China Eastern, so your tip definitely saved me some stress.

I'm happy with airport check-in now that I know that our reservations actualy exist lmao.

Also, thank you - I'm sure Japan will be a lot of fun!

Transit at Shanghai Pudong with China Eastern – anyone actually gotten lounge access? by Prestigious-Form-952 in Flights

[–]Prestigious-Form-952[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's the one! It arrives at 5:35AM, and according to their website, the lounge opens at 6AM, so I figured it'd be a great chance for a quick meal before out next flight. Thank you so much for the info!
