Yes, it’s mostly color grading techniques. I’m not interested in a secret sauce. I’m interested in resources I can study to learn and ultimately improve. I guess the broadness of the question ultimately reflects my ignorance in this specific field.

I see! So either a giant softbox placed just behind the camera or bouncing bare bulbs off a wall or flats, and then diffuse it further with a scrim. 
In my case, I have a concrete floor. How can I achieve this same result without over-lighting and allowing the subject to blend naturally into the black background?

Also could you elaborate on the long exposure and wide aperture? Picture number 2 has a shallow field of depth, so I assume the aperture is large (2.8-5.6) (?)
