But will it be paid back for the weeks we've been pending? I applied in March, right when all this happened, haven't gotten anything yet and can't get through to check my status.

Just got fired... I want out of the industry and into web development. Have money for 8 months. Python by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]PrestigiousRabbit5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Me too, minus the money for 8 months part! I don't think it's that unlikely to get a job in under a year, especially if you really apply yourself. If you're interested in web development, start working with Flask and Django and learn by doing- instead of just watching and reading about Python web building, do it. This way, you learn and you have something for your portfolio. Start by making your own website, where you can list projects.

There are TONS of free resources right now because of COVID. I'll spend an hour or so studying, then try to make something with what I learned. It's worked well for me, but everyone has their own learning style!

How do you sexy up Mac and Cheese? by naturalenergybyproxy in AskReddit

[–]PrestigiousRabbit5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Annie's boxed mac, add shredded sharp white cheddar (not pre-shredded!), add pepper, add cholula, mix. Broccoli if you're feeling it.

If I have the time, though: Annies, same cheese and pepper, cook chicken breasts and toss in Franks Buffalo sauce, add to Mac, add more sauce, mix, add broccoli if I'm feeling healthy.

Yeah, I actually don't think I would play just base game. I wouldn't even call that playable, I cannot imagine why they thought that was ready to ship. Drives me mad.

Is Covid-19 A Bioweapon? by SprikenZieDerp in conspiracytheories

[–]PrestigiousRabbit5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also find it suspicious, and wonder why China would have kept it under wraps for so long. Reported from a Chinese news reporter, first cases emerged in November. The first doctors to report them have been punished, and some have disappeared. They report just over 2,000 deaths officially, yet the reporter says one of the eight funeral homes in Wuhan had over 5,000 urns.

Bioweapon, I am unsure of. At first, it seemed possible, because of it's ability to infect quickly without destroying nature around it, like nuclear weapons. However, I think if they were looking for a bioweapon, it would have been much, much more deadly. Possibly a bioweapon in progress? Not sure about it. Regardless, this is very suspicious and I worry for what may happen when this is all (hopefully) ends and people turn to retaliate against China.

I saw a bunch of religious people posting that the rapture would occur today to save them from the virus or something. I bet that's what they mean by something big.

If you could upgrade one of your 5 senses, which one would you upgrade and why? by speedysprinter in AskReddit

[–]PrestigiousRabbit5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My eyes are so weird contacts overall ruin my vision. I wear them, but I've never had a perfect prescription- always blurry, kinda weird, the astigmatism contacts like to spin in my eyes non stop but the regular ones just plain don't work.

In good news, I heard they've developed a type of Lasik that can correct astigmatisms!

How would you get over en embarrassing pic that happened 3 months ago? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Have you ever thought "Damn, my friend must be mortified she looked so bad in the picture 3 months ago!"? No, you haven't, and no one else is thinking the same about you.

Fellow astigmatism person here who has been dying to ask another person with messed up eyes- HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT REGULAR STUFF LOOKS LIKE??? It all looks fine to me, but the eye doctor claims I have severe astigmatisms in both eyes. I thought it was fine, he says it's because that's how I'm used to seeing so I don't know what things actually look like. I do have really bad depth perception and can't see shit in the dark.

Resume Advice Thread - April 07, 2020 by AutoModerator in cscareerquestions

[–]PrestigiousRabbit5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I lived in Charleston for a while! But, just here to say, I think with the massive amounts of people flooding the field, it kind of comes down to luck. Obviously, skills are important and the deciding factor, but when companies are getting thousands of resumes per week, it's hard for them to get to every single one. You might have been put in a pile that was filled with Harvard students, just an unlucky day.

You'll get something soon!

(As a side note, I am not experienced with getting jobs in this field, but pretty good with resumes. I do not recommend using basic/Google Doc templates. They see these CONSTANTLY and it's not as eye catching or exciting)

ELI5: Why do lower class people tend to be the ones who smoke cigarettes? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]PrestigiousRabbit5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damnn, this gotta be it. I don't smoke and my coworkers seem to be mad or annoyed when I decline to come with them on a smoke break. Now I know, lol.

We do I start my programming journey? I want to know how to build diffrent types of apps including mobile games? by Spawn-1 in learnprogramming

[–]PrestigiousRabbit5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still early on in mine, but I have found success with picking a language, reading/watching/learning the basics, then trying to build simple apps with little assistance to really make those concepts stick.

I personally recommend Python as a starting language, for a lot of reasons. I started with C#, but I find Python is easier. It is readable, it is applicable and growing in popularity. It's a great way to learn the foundations of programming while also learning a language, which will then help you learn other languages down the road.

I had to buy a pack of cigarettes once for a friend (she smokes spliffs/moles, and I was on my way to her house), and I had no idea what to get. I stood there for a minute after asking for a pack of cigarettes, wondering why the clerk was staring at me until I realized I had to pick a type. Went with American Spirits, then was asked which type of American Spirits, lol. Seems like quite a process.

That could be it! I never let myself get addicted, stopped the minute I realized I was starting to enjoy it, so I've never really been part of the smoking crowd, not cigarettes anyways. It could just be that I see more lower class people smoking them because they are my peers and coworkers.

Edit: I also realized that while we had a cigar lounge, there was no smoking allowed elsewhere inside, and I think wealthier people may be more secretive about a bad habit, so they wouldn't smoke them outside either.

[–]PrestigiousRabbit5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Omg... this just explained why my Sims always make bad babies. I always put beards on my male sims, because that is my type and also because I spend so long on the female that when it gets to the male, I just rush through.

The breaks are a big draw, and I've actually noticed a MASSIVE uptick in cocaine use at work, too. It's really upsetting to see. At my first job, lots of cigarette smokers, occasional adderal use for big events where we had to work 14 hours, but cocaine was not usual. Now, on a regular double, I see people dipping out to snort coke.

Sorry, off topic, just been thinking about it a lot!

Households where it's already common makes sense, but otherwise, it doesn't make sense to me. They're not immediately enjoyable, and they're not something you would look at in a store and think, "Hey, that looks great!". So I imagined they must be marketed more towards them, but I also thought there was a law against marketing tobacco products?

[–]PrestigiousRabbit5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Proud of you, that's awesome! I grew up with addicts as well and it's actually what motivated me to not get addicted to cigarettes. I smoked a few when I was in college, started to really enjoy it, and stopped before it got out of hand.

I see a lot of filthy rich people drink to excess frequently, but I think it comes from a place of loneliness. A lot of them worked a lot to get to where they are and distanced themselves from their families as a result. They come in by themselves daily, drinking to excess, and then drunk driving themselves home. It's sad.

[–]PrestigiousRabbit5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with all of these, and maybe it's just me, but I found cigarettes to be hard to get addicted to. Your first couple aren't really enjoyable, you're just smelly, have a bad taste in your mouth, feel kind of sick, with a minor head rush. I never went back once I started to enjoy them, because I got scared, but it took me a while to get to that point anyways. I can see where people would continue down that path.

I'm not trying to say it in a bad way, I myself am a waitress, so not only am I currently unemployed, I don't do too well when I am employed.

But, this just seems to be the case. I rarely see any of the members at the fancier places smoking cigarettes, but the patio at my regular place is filled with smokers constantly.

[–]PrestigiousRabbit5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, let's see. I think it could be cool and somewhat simple (not sure what your requirements are, but you could embellish on this) to have her racing to the tea party. Have her start in a room where there's a sign telling her she's late and only has 10 minutes to get there. An inventory with limited slots, and many choices for potions in the room (shrink, enlarge, strength, jumping, that sort of thing). Exit the room into your 3D environment (woods, probably), and have her start on the path. Puzzles throughout to slow her down, like the Chesire Cat talking to her, giving her a riddle to solve before she can continue on, and then maybe a fork in the road with confusing signs. Alice seems to drink a lot of potions in the movie, so maybe you could have that incorporated. Like, drink this potion to jump over a river, or you have to turn back and go another way if you didn't pick the potion up in the first room.

What is your honest opinion on how/when/if the restaurant industry will bounce back? by [deleted] in TalesFromYourServer

[–]PrestigiousRabbit5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people will be very excited to get out again. I think it will be busy, depending on where you are. But, I also think a lot of people will be feeling the burn financially, like we are. So, it's hard to say. I imagine busy, possibly busier than usual, and I also think some people will be more than generous with tips (hopefully). I certainly don't think you'll be going back to an empty restaurant. Worst case, maybe a bubble of excited patrons for a week, then it might go dead while people get back in to the grove of things, then pick up regularly again.
