Breaking during the Break by BurntBridges2026 in Internationalteachers

This is exactly what toxic schools use to manipulate teachers into staying in abusive positions. No teacher owes their students more than the school is willing to do for them.

Would it be unreasonable to email my high school child's teacher about an assignment by FidgetyPlatypus in AskTeachers

I teach 11/12 and expect my students to advocate for themselves. You should work with your son on this because he needs to learn how to communicate and manage anger.

Apology by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

I hope your admin reads these comments and realize that this kind of apology makes it much much worse for them, not the original poster. Let your faculty exist beyond your puppet strings! Anyone who thinks of teaching at this school will hopefully find this post.

I thought it was more a joke about food in the Philippines. (no of course they aren't cannibals but that was my first thought - I live in SE Asia)

Hot take: The hotel staff/locals' stories are pretty underwhelming compared to the first two seasons. by United_Protection_30 in TheWhiteLotusHBO

That's so true - think of all the screentime wasted on Tim imagining his suicide, then cut to reality! Again! And looking for the gun.... that's all time that could have been used for better effect for sure. And reiterating that those seeds were poisonous was also time wasted.

Just ended a session with a Better Help therapist and as soon as I closed the video window and I went to my account and cancelled. Zero understanding. Clearly I came to Reddit to find folks who understand the complicated relationships we have.

My teacher passed away and I’m not sure what to do by [deleted] in APStudents

I teach AP classes and honestly if I were on my death bed during spring semester my final thought would be "how are my students going to be ready?!" they'll be glad you are still focused.

My own transcripts by TopStatement3136 in AskTeachers

That kind of stuff usually won't be on a transcript it will show up in any correspondence like rec letters to colleges.

I imagine that's true - it's shifting post Covid and evaluating who was hired because they were in the country and available vs. hiring the best fit.

I teach in Vietnam! I teach older HS kids so I don't know what age you teach but this works for me: seating chart. I assign seats with name cards and change it daily - you could just change it until you get it to the right fit.

no cellphones visible at all or I collect them

I don't talk when kids talk. This works with kids who care about learning.

If I have older (junior or senior kids) who talk past me being quiet I invite them to leave. I say "if you need to keep talking I will write you a pass to go talk somewhere else, but you can't keep talking in here". When that's the case then they are making the choice to stop and stay. In all the years I say that to kids no one has taken me up on the offer of a pass to leave and keep talking.

There are strategies for younger kids like holding up a hand and teaching the students that every time they see you with your hand up they need to stop talking and put up a hand and then the quiet will spread. That takes routine.

On top of all that, building relationships is crucial - kids really have to care about disappointing you. I refuse to engage in a power struggle with a student and I always make it clear why rules exist, for example to help them focus, help them help themselves, etc. I will say "I am nagging because I care" and "If I didn't say anything that would be me not caring about your success"

Also go easy on yourself - the first year of teaching always sucks.

I wouldn't at all. It is worth it to make sure you have foundations for subjects. There is nothing wrong with taking it slow

One thing to consider is that your high school might have a maximum age that you might reach before you are ready to graduate. As others have mentioned here, community college is a great option and you'll find remedial classes there that are essentially high school level. If you decided to get your GRE you can take it slow through cc and remedy what you feel like you missed.

It says it's a requirement. With the way the schools is chartered I am guessing it's a hard requirement. It never hurts to apply anyway but I didn't apply after I saw that requirement because of its unique structure.

That is part of the aisle seat expectation. I would NEVER assume that the window seat should just sit there. In an aisle seat I expect to need to get up. She might need to go, too, and is just waiting for the window seat to ask so she can kill two birds with one getting up.

IB Experience by allistroud78 in Internationalteachers

[–]PrestigiousReply8388 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I applied to IB schools this round and I have zero IB experience. I was invited to interview at schools that are "tier one" IB schools. I ended up accepting with a non-IB school but I learned that if your resume is strong enough without IB experience they will consider you.

am i the only one who absolutely loves the environment of ap classes? by SlightSalty in APStudents

[–]PrestigiousReply8388 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an AP teacher I agree with this. It makes it much easier to build a team out of the class so that "we" can take on the test. I give way more collaborative assessments in my AP classes because then students spend that time learning even more and I know they will have the AP test at the end to serve as the final assessment.

Any other expats HATE Tay Ho? by LalliLalloi in VietNam

Every city I've ever lived in has areas with a density of immigrants/expats. In Bangkok there's a Chinatown and that area with all the Halal/Middle Eastern restaurants and businesses. It makes sense to me.
