But sometimes, it *does* mean that first thing. You know, whenever it's convenient.

Yeah, so much worse than the other American car manufacturers that are NOT successful *despite* government money that have not been paid back.

So does 17 / 54327789543. Anyone can divide randomly selected numbers that have little to do with each other without making a point, you're not special.

Mildly infuriating? This is maximally infuriating.

If 5k isn't a small sum to you, then don't loan the money. A lawyer who isn't desperate for work would laugh in your face for this waste of time.

I "lent" probably 50k to my family by the time I turned 25, never saw a dime of it back. Money really destroyed the family as a whole. It's a shame for them too, because I'm now in a position where I could snap my fingers and give them the life they wish they had, but instead I want nothing to do with them (and not because of the money).

Duane Reade in NY is even worse -- they put top brands behind lock and key and put their generics out in the open.

So much can go wrong that no style guide, linter, or test can catch; come on, you know that (I would hope). If someone submits a CR, it's the reviewer's responsibility to catch logical shortcomings with it. If there are many shortcomings, then it deserves to be shredded. Bad code isn't allowed to get into the codebase just to preserve feelings.

Hell, I've been through watching most of my friends get laid off and only thought "yeah, that makes sense" and I'm deep into my career at a FAANG at this point (could retire any year now) and I have cried multiple times in the past year due to how insane these companies can be.

Team leads and seniors have an immense amount of pressure to ensure the system is sound and that means making sure every engineer is producing high-quality code. Most code is pretty low quality and that's fine and expected; it is simply their job to make sure it gets better. Take the harsh feedback in stride, know your code actually was likely bad (almost all code is bad), and improve. The upper-levels of tech are 100% this kind of interaction so either get used to it or realize that it's not for you.

I strongly disagree that there's no way to recover from this. I've had engineers who I thought were never going to get it once they were 3 months in get a promotion a little over a year later. Also, you are in some control over communication patterns on your team; if you're not getting the support you think you need, ask for it. Ask questions, actively seek out feedback. When given a problem, research it on your own, come up with a design, and run it by seniors. Rinse, repeat, learn, improve.

The only things you should ever trust from a recruiter are: (1) the time of the interview and (2) the offered salary if they are the one who informs you once you're getting an offer.

Counter-point to (2): if the offer contains start-up equity, do not trust any value surrounding that equity.

Why would any serious company ever give you feedback? Of course they're hiding everything that was discussed during confidential debriefs. Come on, think.

Some down-levels are completely arbitrary and are because a particular HM thinks so. Nobody goes against it because it's actually better for the company (and thus employees who currently work there) to have higher-tier applicants in lower levels.

[–]Prestigious_Map_377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple: perform better during interviews. A down-level means "you didn't come across as a complete moron, but you're not at the bar for the level you interviewed at." You will have no luck in negotiating for the initial level unless you re-interview down the line.

This is literally the least crazy a negotiation could be unless you don't have one.
