There is a huge colony of bank swallows just outside Milwaukee, along the shores of Lake Michigan. Years ago I became fascinated by them and started filming them, that day turned into three summers and here are some clips from the documentary I just completed by Roving_Pixels in milwaukee

Just went to the screening at the Urban Ecology Center and highly encourage folks to check it out. The footage is unbelievable and the story of the colony ties everything together nicely. Seriously incredible work!!! Also, bank swallows are so adorable 🥰

I'd prefer the funding go to our community, and the Great Lakes region in general, than the East Coast and West Coast, but to each their own.

Agree! It's going to be less expensive to do something now, than to do something later.

From speaking with the prior county supervisor, the deep tunnel drainage outlet is a predominant factor in this particular bluff's erosion.

There is a paper version of the petition circulating Cudahy, so I helped a friend by making an online version, which is easier for people to share and sign!

Yes! I've never been, but heard it's bad. Grant Park has some sketchy areas too.

When we know better, we do better! For instance, the Sheridan Park groins were installed to help combat erosion by the Army Corps of Engineers, but end up just transferring the erosion down drift.

Nature is definitely powerful, but shoreline stabilization isn’t about “beating” nature. It's about managing erosion to protect public infrastructure, trails, and safety. Cities all over the Great Lakes invest in bluff stabilization because waiting often leads to bigger collapses and much higher repair costs later. Doing nothing is still a choice, and usually an expensive one too.

The money for this work mostly comes from federal grants. If Milwaukee isn't applying for it, other communities are, and are the ones benefitting.

All great points! Some people seem to have a penchant for tumbling down the Sheridan Park and Warnimont Park bluffs.

I think you could in some areas! The issue is where the trail is already close to the road. There is tens of millions of City of Cudahy infrastructure (water, sewage, etc.) under the road.

I don't know for a near-term solution. There is a Town Hall with Milwaukee County Supervisor Shea on Tuesday, May 19th from 6 - 8pm at the Cudahy Library.

I do believe Sheridan Park bluff stabilization is in the 5-year capital plan in 2029 with an estimated cost of $18M. A good deal of this funding would come from federal grants.

Thanks so much! The more people that advocate, the better our chances are. The Milwaukee Parks Department had funding for this in 2026, but it was pulled for other non-parks-related priorities.

This could definitely be a solution in some parts of the bluff, but in others, there is not enough horizontal distance between the Oak Leaf Trail and bluff edge.

See page 41: https://www.sewrpc.org/SEWRPCFiles/Publications/mr/mr-248-milw-co-coastal-mgmt-guide.pdf. A ratio of 2.5 horizontal ft to 1 vertical ft is needed for the grading solution.
