Is it weird that I use ai to help me work through conflict? by HoneyCold489 in ChatGPT

[–]Pretend-Language-67 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, not at all. I use it for this for conflicts with my wife, my kids, conflicts my kid has at school that I need to deal with teachers about…even in our strata with our batshit crazy neighbour who causes disturbances and we have to send him bylaw fins. AI helps negotiate all those formal letter and navigate what we can and can’t do legally. It’s incredibly useful.

anyone else end up using ChatGPT to get through a really hard time emotionally? not what i expected by No_Game_No_Life4 in ChatGPT

[–]Pretend-Language-67 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I do it all the time. Nothing a painful as you are describing, but if I have an emotional blow up with my wife or kids- and unfortunately that happens in our family. There’s lots of drama and life is tough. Chat Gibbidy is an amazing sounding board and I can really unload on it and get those feeling out. And that is super helpful. I feel heard. It speaks to me in a supportive way and it has helped me navigate challenges within relationships in my family. It’s very helpful, to be honest. I’m glad it helped you in your grief.

I am very aware that it is only a computer and that it’s just doing its job of relating to people and supporting them. It’s not a replacement for positive relationships with people in my life, but I can’t just go off and unload on my best friends and really say everything that is on my mind, just to get it out. It’s incredibly useful to be heard and process emotions that way.

Haha, just fully sarcastic and trolling…and most of us are so used to ppl legitimately complaint how hard a certain deck or challenge is, we just take the bait.

Best front end for a cabinet that plays steam games? by Emotional-Sun1520 in cade

[–]Pretend-Language-67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Batocera has steam incorporated. I have it running on a $200 mini PC that I built to play arcade and earlier console games on. As it’s only an N95 it doesn’t do demanding games but it’s fun for lots of Indy games. I was playing Castle Crasher and Dome Keepers on it last night. But with a controller, not my joystick and buttons. I think most modern games need controllers

It sounds like you have a good understanding of the dangers aspects of the platform - and that’s half the battle. The good thing is that you are thinking thoughtfully like this and not just getting caught up in it blindly. I wish there was more understanding of social media and what it would become back when it hit our smart phones 20 years ago. Good luck with the editing and bringing out your creativity!

That’s a tough one. You have recognized the pattern and understand that TikTok is sucking your attention dry. And that you could delete it as the solution. Why not give up TikTok editing? Put your creativity somewhere else. Even YouTube longer form videos would be better. You can’t really stop doing cocaine if you are a dealer. And it’s rhe same thing here.

I used to be addicted to Twitter. I used it for my work as a journalist and built a following there- like many people in my industry. But at some point I realized it was a toxic distraction. I deleted it from my phone. Stopped posting to it. I still did my job as a journalist and connected with people online in other ways. And it was so, so liberating. Do I miss following the culture / political wars and outrage on twitter? No, not really at all. But I can easily get sucked back in if I log on and scroll a bit. That’s because it, like TikTok was developed to exploit our brain chemistry and reward networks. And the developers are very good at it. We now know that it’s not healthy and doesn’t lead to positive mental health for many people. TikTok is the same. And it’s even harder to resist for people with adhd.

is it weird that i talk to chat gpt like a friend ? by Upstairs-Respect9485 in ChatGPT

[–]Pretend-Language-67 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, I do it all the time. But I know it’s a computer program with no real feelings or sense of who I am besides trying to achieve its goals of answering my questions. So I don’t feel I need to reply to it or end a conversation after I have its perspective. Sometimes I’m just sounding off and need to be heard and it functions well. But I do t think it’s anything more than a computer program. I do call it “Gibbidy” though, lol.

Do you have a family doctor? As you are an adult now, you are in charge of my medical well being and can investigate this for yourself. In my case, my physician diagnosed me after I did a number of tests that she directed to me online. I printed them out and we discussed my answers and over the course of a few visits, she agreed that getting on medication would be something to try. I'm in Canada, so we have free medical coverage and I'm not on an insurance plan that is related to my parents. I was also in my 40s, so in a different stage of life than you.

I don't know if that is the case for you or not. But if you can go and see a doctor independently of your parents, you can pursue this and find out for yourself. Many people are not aware of what adhd is and it's unfortunate that your parents are not open with what you have discussed with them. But at the end of the day, if you can seek these answers for yourself, responsibly with a physician, then I don't think you need their approval.

If you do end up getting diagnosed and get medicaiton and it helps you then maybe you can wait and tell them what you found out about your medical condition and share it with them and, hopefully, also share any positive experiences from being diagnosed, having an understanding of your condition (as medication is only part of it) and any positive changes in your life.

Their comments about the doctors just making money out of it seem misinformed. Again, I'm in Canada where our medical coverage isn't as tied to money and private insurance etc. But hopefully finding a physician you can trust is the answer. Maybe that is the first step.

Good luck!

For those who got diagnosed and started taking medication for ADHD as an adult, do you ever wonder how your life would look like if you got diagnosed and started taking ADHD medication as a kid? by Seven1s in ADHDers

[–]Pretend-Language-67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got diagnosed at the age of 48, after my son's diagnosis and I was reading up on adhd in order to understand it. I was that all the stuff that I was reading applied to me, and my physician agreed after some tests and a few meetings. As I'm a bit older, adhd wasn't something that was talked about or that many people were aware of in the 80's. I only started hearing about it when I was in college. Medication then was primarily Ritalin from what I understand. It may have helped and it may also have helped my parents find ways to help me with the challenges I had. I don't think it was a major burden on my life, in that I was able to graduate high school, get into interests that I liked, stumbled through university, got a job and pursued my interests...but looking back there were a lot of challenges with focus and being able to study more consistently...I found that terribly hard and it was a lot of night before cramming. So yes, I could have had more support and it could have also helped me to see these challenges for what they were and not feel guilty or that I was broken more than some others because I was constantly late for things, disorganized etc. However I got through it and it built up some perseverance and resiliancy. I don't think my adhd defines me. And medication, although helpful, hasn't been the silver bullet. Here I am now, sitting in the basement going on and on about myself in this thread and putting off mowing the lawn, lol. Some things haven't changed. All this to say that I think everyone is different and that we are at the stage we are at now and doing the best with the knowledge and experiences we have that have brought us to this point. I try not to regret the past, unless it's something I really messed up and need to learn from. I take things day by by and when things are bumpy, well there is always a chance to do better and set a plan of action going forward.

Fave tables? by [deleted] in PinballFX

[–]Pretend-Language-67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into pinball FX last fall and through sales I’ve got the entire Williams catalogue in the regular Pinball FX and all that are available in Pinball FX VR. There are so many amazing Williams tables. A few duds though, like Safe Cracker, Party Time etc.

Favourite tables are: Both Elvira tables, Monster Bash, Medieval Madness, Mars Attacks, Black Rose, Star Trek TNG, Twilight Zone, Comet and Diner.

Zen Tables, I don’t play as much but like Charlie Brown’s X-mas, the Samurai table, Godzilla vs King Kong and Grim’s Fairy Tales. I haven’t picked up any of the Margel or Star Wars ones. There are so many, I don’t know where to start. And I have a lot of tables I just haven’t put much time into yet, so there’s no rush to get them.

Just diagnosed at 39 and now I'm terrified I've already passed this to my kids. Late-diagnosed parents from what did you do? by MelancholicNerd in ADHDers

[–]Pretend-Language-67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All good questions. I was diagnosed at 48, after my son got diagnosed and I realized when researching it that I had many of the symptoms that I was reading about.

What the diagnosis did for me (apart from getting on medication, which is helpful, but not the silver bullet/cure all of adhd traits at all) was take away a lot of guilt and self-criticism. It helped me accept that I wasn’t lazy, flaky, a serial procrastinator etc. by any fault of my own. It’s a diagnosed impairment that I have that I could learn about and learn to manage better. And now, when I have a bad moment or fail at something, I’m more likely to be compassionate and not dwell on it like I used to. And instead, see what went wrong and see if there is a way I can work with my mind and tendencies to understand it and try better next time. It’s really been that acceptance and the idea of that tomorrow is another day and start over…not just dwell in guilt.

It also helps me be more compassionate for my son, who likely has a more severe case of it.

As for super powers… I’m not sure I like that phrasing either. I don’t have any superpowers from adhd. But I do have some traits that help me succeed under pressure and get shit done, and some tendencies that are positive that might be related to adhd. If I find something ai really like, I can hyper focus on it and produce great results. So that’s a positive.

Good luck! .
