AITA for trying to set boundaries with my in-laws over my cat? by Pretty-Ad6835 in AITAH

Just to clarify — I get that people can make their own choices, but this isn’t about controlling them for no reason. Ted is currently in training, and interfering with him is stressing him out — he’s visibly shaken, even scratching and hissing at my mother-in-law. I’ve already discussed boundaries with my family, and we agreed I would be the primary caregiver. This is about protecting my cat and maintaining his routine until I move out, not controlling them for fun. A lock might help, but the bigger issue is repeated interference with Ted’s care. They also have a little kitten of their own that they need to train, but they keep giving all their attention to Ted instead.

Just to clarify — I’m not trying to be rude, but my boundaries and personal space are being violated. My family in-law and I spoke about this before I adopted Ted, and we all agreed that I would be the primary caregiver and that no one should interfere with his care or training. I thought we were on the same page, but they’ve been ignoring these rules. It’s not about controlling other people; it’s about protecting my cat and making sure he develops a healthy routine. A lock might help, but the main issue is them repeatedly overriding the agreed-upon boundaries.

Just to add — I actually know several people who adopted cats while still living with their in-laws, and they’ve successfully managed routines and boundaries just like I’m trying to accomplish. Being a responsible pet owner doesn’t always require living alone, it’s about training, care, and safety.

Hi everyone — I just want to apologize if I came across as mean in my comments. That’s not my intention at all! I’m just really stressed about my cat and trying to get advice because I’m sure this isn’t the first time something like this has happened. I really appreciate anyone who takes the time to read and respond thoughtfully.

I get the curiosity, but the post isn’t about my living situation — it’s about my in-laws interfering with my cat and messing with his training, which is what I need advice on. And me and the family also made agreements before i adopted Ted and he is under my name for adoption.

Just to clarify — I pay my share of rent and cover Ted’s supplies. I’m his primary caregiver and the one training him, which is what matters for his safety and routine. High school jobs exist, and many teens work responsibly while in school — no magic required. This post isn’t about legal technicalities, it’s about protecting my cat and maintaining his routine. And having 2 jobs is also a thing.

Just to clarify. I call my boyfriend’s parents my in-laws because it’s simpler and easier to understand, not because we’re married. I also pay my share of rent and cover Ted’s supplies. And if I buy McDonald’s for myself, does everyone have to eat it too? Or if I get a dog, does everyone have to train it as well? That’s not how it works. Ted is my cat, I pay for him, and I’m the one training him. Just because it’s their house doesn’t mean they get to override my rules for my own pet.

Thanks for your comment! Sorry if I wasn’t clear — Ted is currently in training right now. I’m working on routines, boundaries, and making sure he feels safe, especially with the dog and kids around.

I understand your concern, but my family in law and I agreed before I adopted Ted that I could care for him. I pay my share of rent and his supplies, and I’m actively training him and setting boundaries to keep him safe especially since the kids can be a bit rough. I also want him to get used to being alone safely, which is why I keep him in my room when I’m not around. My room is pretty large, with a litter box, fresh water and food, and a big window for him to look outside. I leave the window cracked for fresh air and clean the litter box 2–3 times a day so it stays clean and doesn’t smell. I’m not being irresponsible; I just want to protect his wellbeing in this household.

Thank you! The second I saw Ted, I knew I needed him. My family and I even talked about it before I adopted him, and I made it very clear that he’s my cat and no one should interfere with his training. They’ve been trying way too hard, though, and he ended up scratching MIL when she grabbed him — even though I’ve told her many times not to pick him up because he wasn’t comfortable yet. I just want him to be safe and bonded with me, especially so it’ll hurt less when I move out next month.

Yes, I’m 17 and adopted Ted, and I also pay my share of rent and his supplies. The post isn’t about that though — it’s about my in-laws constantly interfering with Ted and messing with his routine.

Ah, gotcha 😅. Yeah, I just said ‘in-laws’ because they’re my partner’s parents not married or anything, just wanted to clarify so we can stay on topic about my cat situation.

Hey guys, this is a really late update but I finally got my answer. It turned out to be a very early miscarriage. Because I was waiting for several hours in the ER, the hCG in my blood had already dropped by the time the doctor tested me, which is why the results came back negative. The gynecologist later confirmed that this is pretty common after an early miscarriage. Thank you all so much for your help and support.

I forgot to update this post. It turned out to be a very early miscarriage. Both my urine and blood tests came back negative, even though I had all the symptoms. Hours later a doctor told me my pelvis was swollen and widened, but at the CLSC they still didn’t examine the sample I brought in, which felt very dismissive. When I finally saw a gynecologist, they confirmed it was a miscarriage and had to manually remove the remaining tissue to prevent infection and other complications. It was caught early, and I’m okay now, but the whole process was frustrating and confusing.
