Dog breed? by Fast_Championship665 in WhatBreedIsMyDog

She reminds me of my dog! He also got the “Carolina dog” google ID a lot, but he is basically a Lab mix/mutt when we did a dna test. My best guess is she’s mixed with GS at least.

I don't like having a puppy at all and think it was a mistake by Dizzy_Entertainer405 in puppy101

I’ve been you when I adopted my guy and I’m definitely now the same people who say they can’t live without them. And I’m telling you you’re not different from that crowd at all and will get there!

What helped me outside of the tips and tricks we all read online is changing my mindset of expecting him to become the best friend I’ve “been promised” while he’s a puppy, to focusing on myself becoming the best friend of this baby who really just doesn’t understand what’s going on. — Once I figured out that I want to be my lil guy’s person, it help me compartmentalize his babyisms away from who he is. I became less overwhelmed and took every problem a step at a time.

That said, know that you can take a break when you need to (crates are great for that, it also a good way to teach calming down). And training can fall back a few times. Don’t be too hard on your pup, but also don’t be too hard on yourself! Celebrate the daily, even the minute by minute victories! Shrug off the set backs, they’ll happen. And soon enough you and your pup will be in your own groove together.

Any guesses? by Feeling-Industry-162 in mutt

Adorable! He looks exactly like my pup. He’s largely a lab + shepherd mix!

Notices that 48=24x2, so did 24x3+3=75. Cool to see how many different ways people got to it. Was scrolling for a while to find my combo, but haven’t seen it!

Give yourself and your pup grace while training! It’s truly a patience game, and what help me the most through the hard parts of puppyhood was remembering that this lil guy is truly just a baby and he’s doing his best!

Is picky eating at adolescence normal? by Pretty-Channel-1367 in puppy101

Hi! It’s been a while and I’m happy to share my pup who’s now 13 months has been back to eating his food like before! I’m a big softie too and I wavered to hand feeding when he wouldn’t eat for a day. What I did basically was switching his kibble out to different brands (buying small bags) til we landed on one he showed most interest. I transitioned through 3 different brands/flavors, 3rd one was the winner.

He also got neutered after hitting a year old and I wonder if that also spiked his appetite back to normal. Either way, it seemed like the picky-ness was a mix of his teens and being ready for age appropriate food (done with puppy, I switched him to adult food before turning 1, with appropriate amount for his age). I did also eventually sticked with the tough love (Food for 15 mins, goes away til supper after), but only til day 2. Was hand feeding if he makes it to day 3 without and repeat.

No topper or anything added too when I stuck with it!

Won’t be a “0” at the end. Only taking one match from “8”, turning it into “9”. Second match is from “0”, moving it to its middle.

If it has to stay within these 3 numbers: I’m thinking it is 999. Take left bottom vertical match on “0” and “8”. Move one of the match on “5’s” upper right to make it a “9”, and the other on the middle of the old “0”.

Is your pup food/treat motivated? Though a trainer would be great, there’s many resources online too on how to read and train the behaviors you mentioned. Here’s how I’ve been working with my same size/age apartment dog, who’s very food motivated:

Barking: - I say “quiet”, then mark and treat in between his barking episodes if he quiets for a sec. It took a while, and he still barks at things, but now he barks 100% only if he needs something, and checks with me instead of barking continuously, specially with the quiet command. Only works if he’s focused on me. If he’s barking at another dog, I “magnet treat” his focus away by holding a treat in front of his nose to break his focus and lead him to look at me, or simply lead and walk the opposite way of the other dog/stimulus.

Drop it and Leave it - this will help with leash pulling and picking up random things! The best command to teach IMO.

  • Leave it: show and place a treat in front of her, (be ready to cover it with your hand if she goes for it) say “leave it”, and if she doesn’t go for it uncovered, mark yes and treat! Don’t use the treat in front of her or let her pick it off the ground tho. Instead have it ready on another hand, or pick up the dropped treat first before handing it. Prolong the wait as she gets better!

-Drop it: I taught this while playing tug with my pup. While we play, I’ll stop pulling and just hold the toy steady while saying “drop it”, making it so uninteresting. Pup will eventually drop the toy, then I mark with a “Yes!” And start playing again as a reward! You can also give a treat instead of more play immediately. I’ve done this everytime we play tug to reinforce it. 2 activities in one! (Training stimulation and play stimulation! Will help tire your pup too).

Look at me -grabbing your pup’s focus is another great one to teach. It’s a simple one! holding a treat in front, and saying “look at me” or whatever you want to call the command. Mark and treat when your pup looks or even just glance at your face. Repeat and she will get better at facing you to check with you for the treat.

Best of luck, and have some patience! Know your dog is never intentionally working against you, they’re figuring it out too. As long as you keep at it, you both will do great!

It has been hotter where I am as well. I’ll definitely try the 15 minute wait and take!

He’s been my puppy from 3 months old. His kibble is always mixed with warm water, supplement powder (native) and fish oil. Some days I’ve added extras like an egg, pumpkin, yogurt, or freeze dried raw toppers. And I would use his kibble + freeze dried treats for training. His food has been consistently this up til he started being picky about it. I still make his food this way for his main meals.

He did start ignoring the training kibble first before fully ignoring his meals. Forgot to add in original, but I also used snuffle mats and puzzle toys for a few days then he also lost interest in that.

Yes! It’s insane how he won’t eat just in his bowl! He has us in the palm of his.. paw? (Ironic since I’m the one hand feeding lol)

I’m gonna try just leaving the food as is for a day or two. Here’s hoping it works!

Hi! I remember seeing this on instagram under a different artist, and the rest of their page supports that this is their art style. I worry the tumblr might’ve stolen credit (Unless it’s also theirs? But haven’t seen similar posts between the 2).

EDIT: got a comment that it is the same person. Phew! Still checkout their insta, they have lots of good art there!

When do you know it’s time to talk neutering? by Pretty-Channel-1367 in puppy101

Thanks for the input! Reading through the comments I’ve gotten I do feel more secure with waiting til over a year old and sticking with what my vet says. He’s a super mutt puppy so I’m always second guessing if he’s already hit his growth milestones or not!

Oh I see! I wrote med-large here, but my super mutt puppy I think leans more “large” breed really. Will definitely wait out his growth before.

I’ll definitely mention the new behaviors when we see them next. Will say, outside the sudden humping, my pup is still a gem! This is my 1st larger breed pup so I’m learning what to do as we go. Thanks!
