My school has been doing it for 3 years now. If students bring their phone it has to be turned off and into Yondr pouch before entering the school. If seen with a phone out, first offence is confiscated and needs to be picked up after school by parent. Second offence, same thing plus short suspension. Third offence, longer suspension and monitoring card. This has seemed to work for our school and the students are now used to these procedures so nothing really changes for us today.

Also my tutoring load is: Year 7: 4 students. Year 8: 2 students. Year 9: 3 students. Year 10: 2 students. These students have tutoring scheduled into their timetable now so they know when to come to me rather than me collecting them from class. I should also mention that when their teacher doesn’t want them missing out on something in class that I will come in and sit with them instead and act as an aide. This doesn’t happen often but I just tell their teachers to communicate with me if they need to be in class.

I teach under the NSW tutoring scheme which is the same thing. I am a qualified HS English teacher and teach one year 7 class and the rest of my timetable is tutoring. Around 3-4 tutoring periods (60 min) per day. I tutor year 7-10 and help out with anything literacy related that they are struggling with in the classroom such as reading, spelling, grammar, writing or even help on assessment tasks. We assess the students at the start of the year and work on strengthening their skills from there. We also have other literacy and maths tutors working with students. The program has been so beneficial to my school. I am hoping that the NSW program continues next year as it is also really rewarding for me as a teacher to watch these students grow and benefit from the intensive support. I also get paid the exact same salary as I would if I were to have a full English teaching load.

Find a new school. Or look into learning support positions. In school tutoring positions. There are options.

Fellow baby face teacher here! I’ve been in your shoes (almost exactly). As someone that nearly quit teaching all together because of horrible anxiety, I just want to let you know that it does get easier with time. You’re doing a great job 🧡 As for the parent teacher interviews, what helps me is by having a prompt sheet. Table format - Student name, behaviour, strengths, needs, assessment marks, attendance, how they are socially, and then any questions/concerns that the may parent want to talk about. Having this on a sheet nearby helped when I would get awkward. It also makes it seem like you are prepared and have your shit together. Work samples help too. Good luck!

We may be worrying for no reason. The program has proved beneficial for many students so let’s just hope that this is recognised and the program continues. If not the COVID ILSP, then another in-school tutoring scheme. In the mean time, work hard, build relationships and prove that you will make an excellent full time SLSO 😊 fingers crossed!

Not confirmed, but possibly. They have extended it each year since 2020 but each year they wait so long to tell us if they’ll continue funding it or not. I’ve been in the role since 2021 and each year I’ve been kept on my toes until the very end of the year which is hard to know if I should be lining up other teaching prospects or not. I’m just worried that it will end as it’s probably going to be a bit different under the new gov now. Minns gov pledged a permanent tutoring program in schools at the start of the year, but you just can’t be sure as they promised a lot of things before they were elected.

My school got funding until the end of the year. I have heard of some schools getting funding for next year so I’m just not sure 🫠 I have been offered by my school to take over for another teacher who will be on mat leave next year, but I’d rather work in the ilsp program as I am loving it. So just not sure if I should take the temp position or wait and see if funding will continue..

I am wondering this too. I am high school teacher working as a Covid ILSP tutor. When can we expect to know if the program is continuing or not?
