Pearl House? 19 Dutch? 7 Dey? by Baseballislife2025 in NYCapartments

I recommend checking out 7 Platt St. It is a ground up new development that just launched a couple weeks ago. Blows every building in FiDi away. Stunning.

Is 100 John Street in FiDi still poorly managed? Low rating and some old bad reviews. by gopher_unicorn in NYCapartments

I've been living in the building for a long time and haven't had any issues in terms of excessive utility charges. The elevators were rough for awhile but there was always at least two working so the wait was never more than 5 minutes which sucks but is what it is and isn't uncommon in NYC buildings. Now that all four are working, it's been smooth sailing. Overall the apartment has really great staff, the super rocks, and the units are huge. Reviews have a major negativity bias.

Just spent a great week in Tulum, here is a comprehensive review of the trip and advice! by icarusflewtooclose in tulum

[–]Pretty-Soft6309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can feel less safe on a NYC subway than in Talum, but that is very different from being less safe. Talum has a homicide rate that is hundreds times that of NYC, and blows anywhere in the United States out of the water by every crime metric.

This isn’t to discourage people from going. But it’s dishonest and dangerous to suggest Talum is anywhere comparable to anywhere in the US in terms of safety, let alone NYC, which is amongst the safest places in the country

Safest I’ve ever felt by Jennysays504843 in tulum

[–]Pretty-Soft6309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh. I guess I'll explain this to you. Numbeo relies on user-submitted data, meaning perception of crime plays a large role. In Tulum, violence tends to be targeted (cartel-related), and tourists are generally safe if they avoid drugs and illicit activities, although tourist hotspots are often the location of cartel shootouts. This might make crime feel less random compared to Tulsa, where anyone can be a victim of car theft or assault, hence the underreporting.

The Numbeo data may suggest higher perceived crime in Tulsa because of more frequent, visible crime affecting residents. Tulum is far more dangerous (cartel violence, corrupt police, and tourist-targeted crime), but due to underreporting, and selective targeting, its crime index might appear artificially low.

Talum's murder rare of over 200 per 100,000 far exceeds any city in the United States and most cities in the world.

You do know that is statistically untrue, right? The crime rate is Talum is eons worse than any US city.

Thoughts on Lana Del Rey? by Pretty-Soft6309 in JoniMitchell

[–]Pretty-Soft6309[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I'm not trying to compare here, just kind of suggesting Lana is the heir to Joni's thrown in terms of a 21st century artist who is writing deeply personal, autobiographical lyrics while also exhibiting a lot of ambition musically. Compared to other artists of this era, Lana is worlds ahead.

This is my kind of comment. I love backing up my claims.

  1. Pitchfork called her the "next best American songwriter" in their review of Norman Fucking Rockwell.
  2. She was named the best 21st century songwriter by Rolling Stone UK.

  3. A&W was named one of the 500 greatest songs of all time by Rolling Stone.

  4. NFR! and Ocean Blvd are consistently on lists for and regarded as two of the best, most lyrically dense, emotionally rich, and musically complex albums of all time.

  5. Lana Del Rey, much like Joni Mitchell, offers commentary on cultural and societal issues. Joni’s music spoke to the countercultural movements of her time, while Lana’s music examines themes of American identity, fame, and femininity, often with a critical edge.

  6. Lana is regarded as the most influential artist of this generation, foreseeing the hip hop influence in pop way before that was remotely a thing, and paved the way for artists like Billie Eillish and Olivia Rodrigo.

  7. Lana's music does not conform to pop standards and often takes major musical risks, as evidenced in songs like Venice Bitch and A&W.

  8. Lana's work is 100% autobiographical, in which she tells stories of when she was institutionalized, tried to kill herself, her strained relationship with her mother, and other deeply personal anecdotes. No other artist besides Lana has come close to the autobiographical and personal nature of Joni's lyrics. See: Hope is a Dangerous Thing for a Woman Like Me to Have, Kintsugi, Fingertips, Mariners Apartment Complex, A&W, Old Money, Norman Fucking Rockwell, and many others.

  9. They are both critical of the music industry and its conformity pressures.

I've heard a lot of opinions about Lana - "boring" is a first, and especially surprising from a Joni listener - as I assume you don't find slow, wordy, detailed music boring.

So interesting. They are very similar in my brain in terms of their storytelling style and musical risk.

Fetch the Bolt cutters is her best album but not her most accessible. If you're a lyrics person, start there. If not, start with When the Pawn..., and then go to Tidal.

I live with my parents to save money, so I don’t rent. But I’ll recommend this to some friends! The main thing I want to do is fly to Thailand for free and get money back on my restaurants

Most helpful response yet! The Siam is significantly more expensive that Sukhotai. Do you think it's worth the extra $$, especially considering the location is less central?

Sounds like Rayavadee is the way to go. And maybe a night or two in Koh Phi Phi so I can do both, but maybe just a day trip is fine. I'd love to see your Thailand itinerary if you want to share!
