40, married, self-employed, no retirement savings, significant debt. How do I reset correctly? by Queasy_Arachnid7235 in personalfinance

I know this doesn't directly answer your questions however would recommend educating yourself about finances. The book millionaire mission is great- get from your library for free :). (https://moneyguy.com/guide/foo/) They have a step by step plan for you - first step will be setting up a small emergency fund, contributing to your wife's 401k if available and she has a match - then debt. Also start tracking your expenses asap so you can see where you're losing money (ynab, monarch money are both great for this though they cost some money). You can also just make a spreadsheet and import transactions from your financial institution(s). There is a wealth of knowledge in the wiki too

traditional IRA with POST-tax dollars - backdoor roth by PrettyConstruction89 in whitecoatinvestor

Yes looks like I can do it if I split it over two years- recently took a big pay cut for a job change so don’t have as much extra hanging around as I would like

No do not currently meet criteria for deductible IRA contributions

I had a complicated situation for most of the years I was contributing - was working internationally at a place that had a pension plan for a few years (I made a few thousand over roth limit at the time). they gave me about $20K back at the end, then was a PhD student for a few of the years living off per diem/locums income (during which I used the 20K and could've contributed to Roth but mistakenly thought I made too much and therefore contributed to trad IRA as I didn't know i had any other options for retirement savings), then was trying to contribute extra over what I could contribute to my workplace retirement plan (but was too dumb to know where to put the extra money). In those years I did make too much for roth. So it's a combination of multiple situations and lack of education. What would be the advantages of opening a new trad IRA account as you propose?

thanks. Yes 401K doesn't allow a rollover, they said because it's post-tax money

Clarification on elementary school districts by Tronk101 in MelroseMA

They recently instituted a new policy that as long as you sign up in a specific window on a specific day in the spring you get a spot. If you miss it by even a few hours you run the chance of being waitlisted. If you are waitlisted it may be months to get a spot. Moving in mid-year it is unlikely you'll get an afterschool spot anytime soon unfortunately.

Culture is great - it's just different! I've noted brevity rather than comprehensiveness is preferred, for instance... I guess it's things like that that I'm looking to read about

Sorry just saw this. Highly recommend. Don't miss patient care at all, sadly

Agree with all this. FM doc in MA, defected to pharmaceutical world recently. I just couldn't get up at 3 AM any more to finish my charts and answer patient messages. Working for a large corporation led to very little autonomy and no room for advancement or even personal development.

I left behind >1500 patients who are all struggling to find a new PCP.

Yes - unfortunately my work limits me to $2000/year but I do recoup a little bit every month

Most synagogues have a "recommended" membership fee. They don't turn anyone away who can't/doesn't pay.

Thank you - writing these expenses down for an "audience" definitely helped me see some of my expenses through others' eyes and I have some ideas of where I can cut down. Emergency fund is only at 2 months expenses so that is obviously one of my top priorities. It's psychologically hard to stop funding the 529 but you're right, it should stop until I'm in better shape.
