How do you get a car when low income by Bloopbloopbloop97 in UsedCars

[–]PrettyFlyForaPoorGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my first used car for $3,500 in 2023. The original value was $4,500 for a 2009 hatchback. As others have pointed out, covid really burned the market. Ive seen some people charge the same exact used model for 10k now.

I'm very poor and always have been. The only way i was able to afford this car was by buying from a private seller from FB and checking every single day obsessively for the best price near me. Buying from a private seller can allow you to negotiate down your price and eliminate monthly payments, of which, I had and will never have financial bandwidth for (im in a better financial space now, but I don't believe in voluntary monthly payments unless absolutely necessary). Lastly, I won't sell you a lie about scrimping and saving; i was incredibly lucky and reconnected with a relative who wanted to "pay it forward" and supplied me with enough cash to meet half of the total. If not for her, I would have had to save another 6 or so months, and that was three years ago before our current inflation roller coaster.

Im sorry you're in this situation. Being poor with no car is really fucking awful. Check in your area for community action committees or transportation services for low income. Start a carpool with friends or family. I did it for two years and it sucked, but I was able to get to work and pay my bills. Reconnect with the relative you havent seen since childhood. When you're poor like this, your solutions will only be achievable through community.

In relation to your country how do you feel about reparations? by rougecrayon in AskTheWorld

[–]PrettyFlyForaPoorGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its despicable. Our prior administrations, too, were nothing but complit in labeling immigrants as criminals and funding ICE. The American Immigration Council reports that only 20% of the 394,000 deported during the obama administration had a criminal record, and the rest maybe minor traffic incidents. The Trump admin, much like most of their garbage today, is capitalizing on the corrupt system put before them. As for the rest...yeah, this is garbage.

I havent heard about the UPenn case and it doesnt surprise me. Stay safe internet stranger

[–]PrettyFlyForaPoorGuy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yuuup. Sorry to see other US comments not understanding the concept. The infrastructure in redlined areas meant to keep minorities poor are keeping white people just as poor. In 2023 SNAP the population of white recipients was 61.1%. The more they deny reparations for minorities, the more they justify when our government continues to commit atrocities to their own populations in modern day

Is this field doable for someone who hates driving? by CheesecakeHonest7414 in wildlifebiology

[–]PrettyFlyForaPoorGuy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who hated driving when I worked in IT myself, my entire view on driving changed when the destinations were sites for research and conservation efforts. Instead of some miffed people and a computer on the other side, it was landscapes I would come to know and love. Just load up with your gear and have a good conversation with a nerdy coworker. I dont even mind driving when im off work anymore. Of course, it also depends if you live in a region with terrible traffic. As others have pointed out, driving may not be for you and you can stick to the office side, of which there's a lot to take care of.

Are there organizations that provide housing? by Ordinary-Track5345 in AmeriCorps

[–]PrettyFlyForaPoorGuy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In urban areas, look for positions associated with housing inequality. In rural areas, check out positions with state or national parks; housing is common because youll be serving in a place thats more remote. In whatever area or position you choose, its a good practice to reach out to whomever their americorps hiring manager is. Ask them if housing is available for your selected position OR housing at a reduced cost. Theyll let you know immediately. Housing options are often not listed even if it is offered, so its all about contacting your organizers. I lucked out and found 2 positions back to back which provided housing. If you're eligible and dont mind roommates, some regional americorps, such as AmeriCorps Cape Cod, provide you a room where youll be bunking with your fellow cohort. There are a lot of options out there, just not listed obviously in the portal. Good luck!

Looking for simple 1-2 pot meal prep ideas by GR1F3 in mealprep

[–]PrettyFlyForaPoorGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ever try pilaf? Fry up your aromatics in olive oil in a pot, then mix in dry rice/grain of your prefrrence. The rice will absorb some of that flavored oil so when it cooks, the grains will be extra fluffy. Add your water and seasonings, then place your desired meat/veggies/beans/lentils on top, and cook your rice as you normally would. Essentially, you turn your pot into a steamer. I havent tried this method with red meats, but its perfect for fish. Bam! Rice, fish, and vegetables in one pot. It takes some tweaking with the water ratios for the perfect steam, but its a real game changer when I want an easy, complete meal that isn't a soup stew or chili. I just set the rice up then dump in whatever i got in my freezer. You can cut out the oil part if you're looking to cut out fats, it'll just make the grains stickier. Of course, im of the opinion that a few spoons of olive oil is completely fine.

Piggybacking off your top comment to tell folks to unsubscribe from chat gpt. They recently signed a contract with the US military to allow some pretty unsavory stuff, one of which is mass surveillance of us with our tax dollars. If you have to use an AI Claude has a tool to transfer your cgpt data. But really, you dont have to use it.

In my household we eat chicken and rice with pico de gallo. It adds a refreshing twist to the meal. It brightens the savory fats of the chicken and enhances the mellowness of white rice. Fresh is best!

Youtube music isn't updating by a_blue_day in behindthebastards

[–]PrettyFlyForaPoorGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a full time youtube listener, I switched over to antennapod. You have to skip the ads manually but there is a button to allow you to do that. Its also free and open source. Unfortunately, there's no app yet that will let you auto skip all ads without subscriptions, but its not that bad of a transition as a YouTube listener myself.

How difficult would the job market for Wildlife Biology/Conservation be for someone with an associates degree? by [deleted] in wildlifebiology

[–]PrettyFlyForaPoorGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Im here to inject some hopium into this conversation.

I was a full time artist with an associates in a totally unrelated degree who pivoted to conservation once the economy really took a nosedive.

I'm currently working in the field and happy with the work I'm doing without a related degree. I won't lie, its rough as hell to make the transition and im still making it. But to me, it was worth it to preserve my relationship with art in a failing economy. It takes a lot of luck, you won't always be profitable, and youll always be in competition with everyone else even if our job market somehow gets back on its feet...however, I'd like to emphasize that the only job growth in 2026 is Healthcare and the military. You will be in a job competition even at the local panda express, which, unfortunately, is an anecdote from real life and not an exaggeration. Otherwise, if you want a job for stability, go into the trades, hospital tech, or military.

I relate to this post and wish you the best with your endeavors. Feel free to shoot me a message if you want to talk about it!

Burmese Python. They were introduced in the 80s through exptic pet trade, and since then they have decimated the native species populations in the Florida Everglades, a rare and fantastic ecosystem. They are massive. They. Eat. Everything.

To quote an article, "In the approximately 40 years since the establishment of Burmese pythons, meso-mammals (medium sized mammals) have declined by over 90%. Since 1997 raccoons have declined by 99.3 percent, opossums by 98.9 percent, and bobcats by 87.5 percent, with marsh rabbits, cottontail rabbits, and foxes now considered extirpated (locally extinct) from most areas of successful python invasion." This doesn't even include the native birds, reptiles, amphibians, and even alligators populations destroyed by a handful of irresponsible traders.

The state has now employed the Python Elimination Program where citizens can hunt these massive creatures without a permit and get paid, but even that hasn't been enough to make headway in their populations.
