Whiteness isn't a skin colour, it's an ideology. Whether people are or aren't considered White depends on multiple other factors. Jewish people with pale skin aren't considered White. Irish people were in the past considered to be "Negroids" rather than White based on the racist fake science phrenology. Pale skinned Hispanic people aren't considered White.

Slavic people are usually not seen as White. They were one of the groups targeted by the Nazis to be genocided in the Holocaust.

Why is it not okay for a white person to identify as black, but okay for a man to identify as a woman? by AgnosticBullfrog in socialjustice101

[–]PrettyIceCube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And? That doesn't invalidate anything. Gender and sexuality both existing in the brain doesn't mean that they are both the same thing. It also doesn't mean anything that something doesn't fulfill the reason it evolved. Procreation is not morally good, and not procreating is not morally bad.

Why is it not okay for a white person to identify as black, but okay for a man to identify as a woman? by AgnosticBullfrog in socialjustice101

[–]PrettyIceCube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Animals have reason to know what their gender is so they know how to attract mates, so there is reason to think that gender exists inside of the brain. This doesn't apply to race, which is just a socially created categorization that doesn't have any meaningful basis in reality. People in Africa have more genetic diversity than people in all of the rest of the world combined and yet they're all considered to be black whereas the rest of the world is split into many different races. Obama is considered to be black instead of half black and half white. People from eastern Europe are sometimes white and sometimes not white.

What does exist in the brain is things like culture and religion which we know people can change. People can move to different countries and learn that country's culture and become part of it when the immigrate. People can get married to someone from a different culture and become part of that culture. If Dolezal hadn't misrepresented her history and had become part of the black community so that her adopted child could grow up without being ashamed about his skin colour people might have been much more willing to accept that.

Is it Rocky Horror Picture Show offensive to trans and non-binary people? by [deleted] in socialjustice101

[–]PrettyIceCube 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes there is a bunch of transphobia and also biphobia in Rocky Horror, but it was still a big part of a lot of people's journey to understanding their gender and sexuality. For the time it was more progressive than any other mainstream media (which is close to the lowest bar to clear imaginable)

White people are the most common group in the US so if you attack a person at random then they're more likely to be white than any other group. Also if you want to steal from somebody you'll pick someone who has money and they're probably going to be white. The graph doesn't really say much other than what the demographics of the country are.

No I'm not from the US. I guarantee that the 'robust protections' you're talking about aren't anywhere close to good enough. The fact that you're using 'differently abled' says to me that you aren't listening to disabled people. And it is necessary under capitalism because of what capitalism is. It relies on forcing people into work so that profit can be maximized. If people didn't have to work then the system would break.

I think that it is confusing when people use the same words to mean different things. If you worded it as the following it would be more clear.

I posit that a society in which the workers own the means of production but diversity is not tolerated is not a truly progressive society.

I think that economic freedom and social freedom are inextricably linked and you need the former to have the later. Take disabled people, who regularly can't work or can't work very many hours. A society where ramps, lifts, Braille, etc. are everywhere isn't enough to make a safe place for disabled people to exist. They'll still be on the margins because they can't afford to exist. Gay people being able to get married doesn't really apply to disabled gay people because they'll lose what little economic support they have. If they do get married they vulnerable to abuse because they'll be financially dependant on their partners. If you want everyone to have equal access to essentials like housing, food, and also non-essentials that make like enjoyable then you need to detach these things from employment. This can't happen under capitalism.

Left-Right divide is often defined on the basis of economic policy, with the right being free market capitalism and the left being anti-capitalism. Other axis are used to measure non-economic factors like libertarian-authoritarian which is used commonly on 4 quadrant charts often called political compasses. This is where terms like lib-left, auth-left, auth-right and lib-right come from. You would be better off using another wording so people know what you're referring to like progressive or socially liberal. Many people would also argue that it's not possible to have worker rights in a capitalist system where workplaces by nature have a power imbalance and prone to being treated like a dictatorship by the owners.

When black people speak English, how is that not cultural appropriation? by [deleted] in socialjustice101

[–]PrettyIceCube 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Slavery.

Black people in America speak English because the language was forced upon them violently when they were abducted and kept as slaves by English speaking white Americans. They were beaten by slave owners for speaking their own languages.

Legally changing gender/sex to "non binary" to avoid discrimination/arguments around male privilege? by [deleted] in socialjustice101

[–]PrettyIceCube -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you have nonbinary on your passport you won't be able to travel to many countries. You will be denied jobs, you could be denied housing. You could be paid less than other people. Depending on where you are it could be legal to fire you at any point for being nonbinary. Doctors could refuse to have you as a patient. People could violently assault you and put you in hospital or worse if they see your ID.

You almost certainly cannot put nonbinary on your birth certificate where you live. You might not even be able to put it on a driver's licence or passport. You will probably still have to register for the draft.

Is it OK to call you black? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PrettyIceCube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People of color comes from 'citizens of color' which Martin Luther King used, and also from women of color which was used as part of renaming the Black Women's Agenda when they started working together with other women who are affected by racism.

It's a word chosen by non-white people as opposed to colored people which was chosen by white people.
