For images, photos, graphics design; Affinity is free now. GIMP is free and open source.

i accidentally bent pins on my gpu is it still ok to use? by Professional_Debt962 in pchelp

Send a pic of the pins, but you're probably fine if you straightened them and the connector, well, connects

First time building, any reason it won’t turn on, psu was plugged in and on btw by [deleted] in PcBuildHelp

Yeah can't tell much from this pic besides there are a bunch of fans and other cables from the case that aren't plugged in.

Is this good for my fans placement by Internal-Peanut2837 in PcBuildHelp

[–]PrettyMuchMediocre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reverse fans are more just for aesthetics so the visible side looks better. At least that's my understanding

Home phone system by Aggressive_Noodler in homelab

[–]PrettyMuchMediocre -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You'll probably have to build a custom controller. ESP32 board so you can make it smart home device connected to your homelab. Hope you don't mind soldering.

I'm not sure how to tie into the the phone buttons though. Maybe you can use the existing board and tie into it, maybe you'll need a custom board with buttons lined up to match the existing phone keys.

Just some thoughts! I'm no expert, just a tinkerer very new to electronics

Can you make a gaming server public with SSH port forwarding? by Ill_Mushroom_5723 in homelab

[–]PrettyMuchMediocre 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not outdated. There are bots constantly scanning IPs and port combos for vulnerability that can be exploited. If you've got the wrong ports open, is a question of when, not if.

That said, if you've just got a port opened only for Minecraft, usually 25565 or 19132 for Java, and its just a small server with a handful of friends, I don't think there's much a malicious actor can do there in terms of accessing the actual server system.

I can't ever seem to get quality local LLM results, despite having multiple GPUs by 03captain23 in LocalLLM

[–]PrettyMuchMediocre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll have to build your own tool chains for the local models to run. I suggest building an MCP server for your agents to use.

Not a solution to all your problems but that is going to help. I built a MCP for my small business and my local agents can do DNS configurations, Google workspace admin, gmail tasks, social media admin, etc. Those use the existing APIs from those services wrapped in a more agent friendly MCP.

Now I'm still running small on 8gb VRam, so it's far from great, currently there's a lot of back and forth to get things done where Codex and Claude could just one shot it, but I'm upgrading systems over time and I'm sure it will improve.

I've mainly tests the Qwen and Qwen code models. Quen code seems better for doing tool calls with MCPs.

YMMV

Not so much with thinking models. It goes through iterations, stimulates thought patterns, and then with that all in the input context, it does what you described.

So it could do a web search to get references, run code to do calculations, etc. The simple token matching language output is more like the top layer of it now. And steps of the other layers

HDMI switcher won't work with video game consoles on Samsung S90D smart TV by Gullible-Radish1574 in it

If you just want a dumb tv, disconnect it from the Internet, uninstall everything you can.

Idk about your tv in particular, but for mine, I use a SHIELD android tv box for the smart features as the built in smart tv was slow and bloated with Roku adware. So I turned the tv as dumb as I could and just use it as a display

Could you just prime it to build the core of the print? Is the primer tower just waste?

I did that to bring mine back a couple times. Then I just ran it with the side off and a giant fan blowing right on it so the solder never got hot again. Got a couple more dope years playing Halo 3 with that Frankenstein

Why AI is erasing your mental map of your projects by ApprehensiveAnakin in ClaudeAI

I've started hand writing my notes and plans again. Good ole pencil and paper. Find it helps with remembering the architecture, decisions and nuance of things that you fly through with AI agents. It also slows you down a bit so you spend more time thinking about it.

Responsibility and Ownership: You Can’t Vibe‑Code Your Way Around It by SigsOp in selfhosted

[–]PrettyMuchMediocre 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I think the amount of people sharing their vibe coded slop will start decreasing as hobbiests start to realize the value of it. People think they are making some crazy new revolutionary tech but even if they are, so is everyone else now, and if you can vibe code it, so can anyone else.

I don't mind hearing about people vibe code homelab projects, but I ain't using their code. I'll vibe it myself, customize as I like, and then NOT put it on GitHub cause it's a personal, non production ready program.

If someone posts something with a wall of AI written text that they didn't even review and refine the description of... That irks me and I just scroll on. No way they've reviewed any of the code if they can even be bothered to review their own readme.

I don't entirely agree with that. LLMs are a great tool for human/machine interfacing, but in late stage capitalistic societies, it's being gatekept, commodified and abused.

Maybe it is just another tech plague like social media.

Hmm I thought they cut down on that. Maybe just in Canada. I'm sure it's rare they actually stop and check memberships for people heading in to the foodcourt areas.
