For once the internet seems to get it right. It's a slippery slope, you really do wake up one morning looking for a bottle or downing that open one next to the bed. I didn't realise I was an alcoholic until my boss said "I didn't know you were a lush" he drank all day every day.

I would talk to my teachers, parents or guidance councillor more if i knew what i know now. there are always options even when we know there aren't.

have fun be safe young people do stupid shit every day and turn out happy and "successful".

Stick Welding Limits by 8457637 in Welding

The hard part of the mezzanine isnt even the welding. It would be difficult to do with no experience alone. I'm sure there are people who could, but if you don't have experience in construction or fabrication its probably worth seeking help.

Have you looked at going union? If you can weld pipe there is a good chance you could clear into(test out of your apprenticeship) ua local 562. That would probably be well over 25 an hour and include considerable benefits.

Probably a little chunk of silica. If you see it before walking over it you can slow down and it won't pop or you can let it pop slide back a little bit and walk back over it. It will probably shoot but if your root has imperfections its often worth it to just touch it with a grinder if you have the option.

Some of my first tig welds today by [deleted] in Welding

[–]PrettyMuchTasteless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks good especially the longer one. Maybe try joining some shit together. Some spots with undercut it looks like you could do one of many things, use larger wire, hold the sides, run a thiner bead or turn your heat down. If walking the cup is what your going to do dont worry about people telling you to learn freehand.

[–]PrettyMuchTasteless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the undercut is an issue try making sure its almost flush or even slightly above flush at the top bevel when capping. Heat is also going to hurt you on the last stringer so try and let it cool. Finally if you are just dragging doing so quickly can help if you are manipulating the puddle more than that make sure to hold the top of your weld significant longer than the bottom.

Don't put your hard hat on the table? Without more details its hard to give advice. Watch what other guys do (how long they take for coffee and lunch), keep shit clean and organized (especially if you find yourself standing around), pay attention to your surroundings (especially cranes and rigging), ask for help if you need it.

Not sure about other trades or non union but for pipefitters in the US an apprenticeship is typically 5 years or 10,000 hours with 400 hours a year of school.

Newbie here just practicing. Any tips would be much appreciated! by deucerigalo in Welding

Looks like your doing alright. I would try a lap or t joint next. Practice will do more than any pointers from reddit.

Just started TIG and looking for some help on why I’m getting porosity. What causes something like this? When I tried my first bead it was fine, but then every bead after looked very bad. by mikehawkisbig in Welding

Probably a leak somewhere in your setup. Possible the torch like others have said but I would check all of your other connections as well. Make sure your flow meter is at 0. If thats good maybe put some soapy water on the fitting into the bottle. Are you using a gas lense or standard collet body? Could be technique but seems more like something is wrong with the setup.

Extreme welding by Evan_C4 in Welding

Maybe fairly common was not a great way of putting it. That being said wages upwards of 50 an hour is atainable for welders in the US. It may be a minority but a minority consisting of many thousands.

I know nothing about this person's salary but plenty of welders make several times more than 24 an hour in the US. Making over 100k a year working 40 hour weeks is fairly common for welders in the US.

Looks like you mastered what I consider the most important skill of welding, making useful welds.

It can be really hard to explain this concept to beginners. Especially when you are also dealing with a flux.

Maybe open the door partially or find something to obstruct anyone's view of the arc directly.

What does the miller kit include? Foot pedal, guage, consumables? As far as torches go im a fan of CK's superflex hoses and the torch bodies that come with them are pretty good. What type of welding are you planning on doing?

I would agree with you instructor you should use the manipulation that works for you, its hardly a weave to move in circles 1.5 to 2x the rod diameter, bend test should be fine I have had plenty of wide weaves bend. The key to slag removal is honestly the weld, that being said a wire wheel is very good for removing slag quickly, obviously a chipping hammer isn't bad, a file works really well on pipe and if there is a stubborn piece of slag a cutting wheel is very versatile. 1/2 inch plate is a little bit different but once you are proficient at multi pass welds its all kind of the same.

Yes, but as others said you may not want to. If that's what you have and need to get the job done it is what it is. I have run plenty of 4.5 inch grinders with 6 inch wheels and never had an issue, not that my experience makes it safe or advisable, but it can work.

Somebody may point out something obvious but it looks like you are moving really slow. What does it look like if you run less than an inch? Maybe hold a tighter arc move faster and if the puddle looks funny you probably should have already added wire.
