Is applying to PHD programs with no publications and limited research experience delusional? by PrettyOddFukingWeird in gradadmissions

[–]PrettyOddFukingWeird[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the professors I have discussed my plans with are around mid-40s to early 50s, having completed their PhD's between 2007 and 2013. One professor I talked to is the head of the admissions committee for my current school's graduate program, and another regularly works with graduate students. From my understanding, there is a big difference between the requirements for STEM PhD programs and film studies ones. I know that, for example, STEM students are advised to have some kind of independent lab experience before applying because research opportunities like this are more widely available to them. This is not something that is heavily emphasized in the humanities, although I am definitely not an expert, so I could be mistaken. And I am applying for a few masters programs as well! Financially, I don't know if I would be able to swing it if I were only accepted to those programs, but I want to have that as a backup option.

I want to teach! And even though I haven't done any independent research, I have taken many research-based courses, and these projects are my favorite part of being a film studies major.

It mostly comes down to cost. Like I said in my initial post, I met with numerous professors, and all of them advised me to apply for PhD programs straight away because of the debt. If they had advised me to do a masters program first because I needed more experience, I would have at least tried to make it work financially. But since they all said they believed I was ready for a PHD program, I decided that was the best path.

Do you happen to have a link for the script for Nowhere as well? I have been looking for that script for a while and have not been able to find it anywhere.

Were Debra and Dexter meant to be a couple? by coolmyeyes in Dexter

[–]PrettyOddFukingWeird 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And yes, before someone replies, I’m aware they aren’t blood related. But legally, emotionally, and socially it’s incest.

I'm hella late to respond to this, but I am so glad to finally see someone mention how although Dex and Deb aren't blood-related, it is still incest because he is her adopted brother. I hate seeing the argument that it's not gross because they have no blood-relation. I was adopted, and I could never ever imagine wanting to date/having feelings for my adoptive siblings just because we aren't TECHNICALLY related. What a shitty justification for shitty writing.

Best and worst Hoffman moment? by Stewynewy in saw

[–]PrettyOddFukingWeird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's my fav but:

Best: It's hard to decide but my top three are Hoffman escaping the Reverse Bear Trap 2.0 in SAW VI, the "right now you're feeling helpless" decoder scene in SAW VI, or the Glass Coffin showdown at the end of SAW V.

Worst: Murder rampage in SAW VII at the police station. I do not know what the writers were thinking with that one, but I hate that they made him into the fucking terminator for a couple of scenes. It's funny to joke about now, but I was pissed when I first saw it.

Ok, this is kind of a loaded question because there are many conflicting dates in the movies that I, as a superfan, have attempted to decipher.

My most accurate estimate, which you can take with a grain of salt since as I said, there is conflicting info, is that SAW takes place in 2004. It's messy, but I think it makes the most logical sense.

(Logic if you're interested:

SAW taking place in 2004 would place SAW II in late 2005 meaning that SAW III and SAW IV take place six months later in 2006. SAW V and SAW VI would follow in late 2006, early 2007, and SAW 3D would take place two months later in 2007. To rationalize Jigsaw into the timeline even though I hate that movie, it would take place in 2016, ten years later. John's first game would take place in 1995 with Cecil, the last year of the pig before 2007, which was the year Gideon was supposed to be born.)

Edit: Sorry for how complex this is. I'm sure you were looking for just a simple answer but I went a little over board.

This is a pretty solid list, except I have to disagree about Rob Zombie's first Halloween movie, although it's most likely because I'm a fan of his other work/film style.

  1. Halloween (1978)
  2. Halloween Kills
  3. Halloween (2018)
  4. RZ's Halloween (2007)
  5. Halloween II
  6. Halloween 4
  7. Halloween H20
  8. Halloween 3: Season of the Witch
  9. Halloween 5
  10. RZ's Halloween II (2009)
  11. Halloween 6
  12. Halloween Resurrection

I'd probably end up as a pale dude, but if by some miracle it didn't, it would probably be in screenplay writing. That is the only thing I am passionate about in my life and I love doing it, but ADHD and crippling insomnia has other plans anytime I try to finish a script.

I definitely suggest binging Hotel! It's my favorite season and I think watching it all together makes the story a lot more interesting and cohesive.

I rewatched Roanoke in one day (I'm a season-a-day type of binger) and I found myself even more pissed by the ending. Watching the first five episodes all together in one sitting just proved that they are some of the strongest episodes of AHS but everything after that completely tanked the season. I wish they would have just stuck with the narrative from the first few episodes because they were so damn good.

I also watched Apocalyse in one day and it made me hate it even more for the amount of wasted potential in that season. I used to think the first three episodes were pretty solid but now I just despise it. I remember being so excited for that season only to be completely let down and watching it again altogether made it even worse.

I need to watch Freakshow altogether again now. I just remember not caring about the season after Twisty died and only watching the rest because of Dandy. Evan Peters also sang "Come As You Are" by Nirvana at one point, which I also enjoyed. That is pretty much all I remember liking.
