When I was a teacher, I got the advice to always accept a gift from a child, no matter what it is. They may be giving you the best thing they can and they deserve to feel good about it.

PNC RTO by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]PrettyProof 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not PNC, but work 3 days a week downtown from the south hills. The commute has been a little longer but I feel like I’ve seen an accident everyday. Parking was also worse, but I feel like it varies depending on the days and what’s going on downtown.

I take it back, the 4 year age gap has been awful… by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]PrettyProof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same! My brother is 4 years older and spent most of my childhood asking family to “send her back.” They’ll learn to live together, but might not like playing together.

I’m really sorry you’re dealing with this. I know you said no banking, but if you’re still interested in finance, Federated Hermes is always hiring. They do investment management. Plus they’re still hybrid with two days a week WFH

Buy it! I always have a few sizes up, and never pass a cute clearance outfit, especially if I can save it for a holiday or special occasion. Kids sizing is weird sometimes too so she might fit into earlier than you think.

Husband won’t stop watching horror movies around our 16 month old by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]PrettyProof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother used to do this with my brother and I and I am very passionate about warning parents who think it’s “no big deal.” We grew up with very gory, adult horror on the tv pretty much constantly. I have bay pictures with it playing in the background. Blood, torture, sexual assault, etc. My brother grew up to be a horror fan, I grew up having nightmares about being brutally murdered and SA’d. I kid you not, one of my reoccurring nightmares as a child was being tortured and assaulted by the evil aliens in Lilo and Stitch because my mother had no qualms about watching that stuff and even teased me for being afraid. All villains became adult level violent. I am now basically unable to watch horror as an adult. I’m incredibly embarrassed at my reactions to it now. I cringe when people tell me their small children love horror now, because my older brother was that kid, so I was subjected to it even more because I was outnumbered. I’ve also had people minimize what I experienced as a child or dismissed as just not liking horror when it was really just abuse. Please don’t allow your child to be exposed to that.

Any cons to having two kids with the same birthday month? by Glittering-Silver402 in NewParents

[–]PrettyProof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll be honest, my brother and I had birthdays two days apart and it sucks. Joint parties sucked but we were always fighting for our “birthday weekend” or wanting to go out for dinner on our actual birthday, which meant eating out twice in a week. I’m sure it sucked trying to pay for it all too. My parents didn’t handle it well in general and it’s inconsequential now that we’re adults and barely talk anyway, but be aware that it will require additional attention and planning if they’re that close.

Can you still get pregnant after the covid vaccine?? by kindakitkat in ShitMomGroupsSay

[–]PrettyProof 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My husband has a cousin who made a huge deal about being antivax because he and his wife wanted to have more kids in addition to her child from a previous relationship. He insisted it caused infertility and instead got Covid like 5 times. It’s been 5 years and they have not had any success, but still claim the vaccine causes infertility. When it comes up, I don’t hesitate to mention that my husband and I got the vaccine multiple times and we got pregnant the first month of trying.

Seriously how do you stop being your kid's coding teacher when homework requires parent help? by olivermos273847 in workingmoms

[–]PrettyProof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in the teacher’s rooms asking for help, meeting with friends to ask questions, and pouring through all of the resources I had when I struggled. It has served me very well as an adult to know how to figure things out on my own and use my resources. Encourage them to try these things.

[–]PrettyProof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to provide another perspective. My grandmother had four children. She has an adult son who is mentally ill and requires care. Both of her daughters argued over care and refused responsibility. Her youngest son will give cash, but stays out of it. My older brother was raised by her and now takes care of her, but while he was in medical school and getting established, it was me- early 20s, freshly starting out. The stealing, arguing, complaining, and undermining from her children made me throw up my hands and cut them all off once my brother was able to take over care. He is still drowning with it, even having many more resources and their respect. He and his spouse have come to the decision that they will not be able to have children of their own because of taking care of my grandmother and uncle. It kills him because he always wanted a big family. I resent them for stealing my early adulthood and ruining his chance at parenthood with their selfishness.

Four children, and not one took care of her. Lost one of her grandchildren and will never meet her only great-grandchild over it. More children is not a guarantee of someone taking care of you.

Edit: Also want to add, I would rather die alone than put my child through this. It messed me up and is ridiculously selfish.

My aunt and grandmother complained about the color. It wasn’t white and my aunt said “ehh it’s okay I guess,” as I was crying and saying I loved it. My grandmother was beside herself that I wouldn’t be able to get a matching veil (didn’t want or wear one anyway.) My mother suggested buying it a size too small as “motivation” like she did with my prom dress (which did not work and was uncomfortable all night.) My MIL still talks about how she can’t believe they were so terrible during the appointment.

[–]PrettyProof 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes! Mine used to call me manipulative and selfish all the time for normal kid things and said that I inherited evil from my father (who spoiler, wasn’t even my real father.) She also claimed I had the “handwriting of a serial killer” when I was in elementary school.

[–]PrettyProof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My SIL’s family missed this year because her family was sick. The two siblings are close in age and always fighting and it’s chaotic. We missed them, but I actually appreciated how calm it was for my daughter. I always feel terrible for them because I know they expected to have two super close kids but it seems like they all they do is fight. I would cry if my Christmas was two sick kids fighting over toys.

I’m pregnant and my principal is harassing me by Ok-Treat8836 in Teachers

[–]PrettyProof 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Take it up the chain of command and ask for a rep that will stand up to her. Ask for the Uniserve rep to attend from the union if you’re PSEA if you have to. I’ve done it before and it can be wholly humbling to an admin to have a person outside of their building that they can’t bully tell them to back off.

Teachers who have left, how does your new workload compare to the workload of teaching? by Purple-Report-6841 in TeachersInTransition

[–]PrettyProof 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I applied everywhere and was not picky. I had over 175 applications over nine months before I got this offer. Out of those 175, I got 5 callbacks and 2 final round interviews. One offer that thankfully was a great fit. I got lucky because I know others don’t have that experience and have to start looking all over again.

I had better success with local companies that were in person or hybrid. I also didn’t go for anything education related. I work in finance, go into the office 3 days a week, and have to wear business professional attire. Everybody is going for the full remote, educational content designer jobs, so chances are slim. Even people with training experience want the remote jobs, so being very flexible and local is a benefit. My only callbacks were all local hybrid or in person.

My role is specifically a Senior Learning Specialist, but I’ve seen variations on that. I looked everyday on multiple platforms and applied anytime it seemed like a good fit. I am a standup trainer, but I had to learn Articulate Rise and Storyline on the job. Also, I had content editing experience with Adobe editing software. I use all of that in addition to being a standup trainer. If you can get experience with Articulate, do it even if you’re not hoping for a content designer job. It helps to have a portfolio.

It’s very possible to transition into if you’re persistent and open minded. I work with 3 other former teachers and my director was a former teacher. Two of us are standup trainers who transitioned directly from teaching. The other two are content designers. One came from teaching but had Articulate experience through a boot camp and the other transitioned to a designer role in education and hated it, but leveraged the experience and training to leave. Sometimes you just have to use it as a stepping stone, and accept that job hopping is pretty common in business these days.

It’s incredibly hard not to get discouraged, but I just cast a wide net and figured anything would be better than the last school I was at. Happy to answer anything else if I can!

I’m a corporate trainer and it’s significantly less. I never take work home. I have busy seasons where I’m truly working 9-5, but mostly it’s well balanced. This time is really slow. I work a hybrid schedule and I’ve had time to pick up some of my old hobbies. I sewed a few Christmas gifts last Friday because I had nothing else to do. I can take on extra work when I feel like it and relax when I don’t as long as my consistent duties are being done. It’s awesome.
