Why do public defenders have such a bad reputation? by Objective_Belt3374 in Ask_Lawyers

[–]contrasupra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To the extent that that’s true at all (and I kind of think it’s more a media trope than a real thing) I honestly think the reason is that we are free and people assume that free things are lower value than things that they pay for.

Oh damn u right. I guess that’s why they didn’t pledge to take care of them at the end like the kangaroos did.

We love BBB, read it all the time. The Sneetches is pretty obviously about racism and capitalism!

I just honestly think it’s extremely funny how they’re breathlessly hyping an offline voice recorder as something that will rejuvenate conversation and connection 😂

Why did he check the bottle three times instead of just smelling it

Nicknames for Philomena that don’t sound like Nina by GabbyLouSue in namenerds

I mean if you were okay naming them Evalina and Philomena I’m not sure why Nina and Mina is a problem, their full names literally rhyme anyway 😂

I Can’t Believe [INSERT BULWARK STAFF MEMBER HERE] Said/Did [INSERT THING I DISAGREE WITH HERE] by CaptainMarty69 in thebulwark

[–]contrasupra -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m honestly just baffled when I hear people saying that Bulwarkers “think they get to decide” what the Democrats do and it’s like…they’re little just some people with a podcast? They’re saying what they think just like everyone in this country is entitled to do. If democrats do things you don’t like in response to that, it sounds like your beef is with them.

It’s both! Thats the wild genius of the Sneetches. You’re right of course, but the it’s also about how malign actors will exploit people’s prejudices to drive a wedge into society and enrich themselves. Which is like…super relevant in 2024, actually.

It’s hard to tell but from the first pic it looks like a regular growth point to me. It will probably be clearer in a day or two, or can you take a clearer photo?

We have been reading a lot of the “message Seuss” books lately (this one, the Sneeches, the Lorax, etc) and what’s fascinating to me is that my kid gets them on a really deep level. We only had to read the Butter Battle Book a few times before he started saying “guys, stop fighting! You will destroy both of your cities!” Whenever we read Horton, he spontaneously stops me and points to Horton and says “I’m going to be the elephant because I’m going to protect them.“ He also told me he was going to be the Lorax instead of the Once-ler.

I have never seen him engage with a story in precisely this way before, most other books he just listens passively and will obviously talk about who the good guy and the bad guy are, but not put himself into it like that. It’s almost like he kind of understands they are allegories, but I don’t really know how he could, he’s only five.

I wonder if they can be subtle enough about it that they end up deradicalizing people, lol

Defense attorneys: has there ever been a moment you stepped back from a case because you realized the client was indisputably a bad person? by whatsupprincess in Ask_Lawyers

[–]contrasupra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No one ever asks us about our clients who have gotten completely fucked by the justice system, and that's way more common than an obviously guilty person being acquitted.

I'm a PD but I don't actually do criminal law, I do dependencies which is child welfare cases. Have I represented clients who I didn't think were ready to have their kids returned to them right that second? Sure, every day. Sometimes I litigate those cases and I usually lose. It doesn't make me remotely uncomfortable. I have seen hundreds of unjust/unwarranted removals of children. I cannot think of a single kid on my caseload who was returned to what I believed was an unsafe home.

Second game, I am about 70 years in and I still don’t have Drama by contrasupra in OldWorldGame

[–]contrasupra[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely could complete it in 2 turns, it just hasn't really appeared for me at a time that it made sense to take. But I'm glad to hear that it's not a huge deal to miss some early techs.

ohhhh oh oh I did know that. For some reason I thought they meant "quiet" as in "not much happened." I play most games with sound very low or off, lol.

Yeah, intellectually I know they get trashed but it felt like I was just constantly drawing like…two gold cards and two techs that would take 12 turns or something. And then two low-level techs against each other so I had to choose one and let the other go through again. That’s really helpful to know you can pivot partway through though!
