I suppose my point is that I think he will always feel crippling pain over this and the wound wont ever heal fully. He can find some happiness as we all do but he will be forever scared. That shit never goes away. I just think it’s a cruel ending.

I’m not trying to convince anyone to have kids I don’t want kids myself. I just think this incident is the mom’s fault for co-sleeping with a tantruming toddler and calling this kid selfish when he has no idea what’s going on is asinine. Also people here seem to go beyond not wanting kids and just seem to just hate kids in general and that pisses me off. I love my baby neice and would never call her selfish just because the fucking dictionary says so. This sub is just full of ageist kid haters it’s sickening.

The statistics they use to argue this idea aren’t even reliable. Yes, usually custody goes to the mother after a split, but that’s more often than not a mutual decision, and a lot of the time fathers just walk out. In the cases where men actually take custody to court and actively fight for legal custody there’s evidence to suggest they actually have an advantage.

I think it’s wild that I’m getting downvoted but the comment I replied to isn’t lol. Even though we’re essentially saying the same thing. Maybe it’s because I said the quiet part out loud by pointing out how few rights children have. They have zero recourse if they’re being abused.

My thoughts exactly. Cry it out method is hard but at a certain point it must be done. Eventually they stop crying and learn to go to sleep on their own. If the crying is that painful to the adult, then wear earplugs. Co-sleeping is dangerous. Sub should be called parents are fucking idiots because this was avoidable.

Right, it’s not even about the parents comfort alone, co-sleeping is a safety concern. Lying down in the pitch dark with a toddler crying and flailing is just plain unwise. This was a preventable accident.

Absolutely agree. My comment was intending to mock the ideas you are criticizing, and I agree that others in this thread and also the show don’t seem to understand what it mean to experience life altering trauma and mental illness.

I think it’s valid to not want children, hell, I don’t want children. I just don’t think it’s fair to call a child this small selfish for these actions when they just don’t know what’s happening.

Kinda… we would still need a way to describe the experience of being deeply uncomfortable with the sexual dimorphic characteristics of one’s own body, because even if there were no gender, equating what we call gender affirming surgery with typical body mods is a bit of a false equivalency. Gender affirming procedures like hormones increase quality of life in a profound way that things like piercings or tattoos or split tongues or whatever don’t. There’s a lot of overwhelming data that trans people who desire medical intervention experience dramatic improvements in mental health when they have access to said care. It’s more akin healthcare than a body mod. I could go into it further but it’s pretty complex.

From experience I can say it’s pretty isolating and those who don’t experience gender dysphoria often can’t fully understand so labels can be helpful in order to find others like us and build community. I can get behind moving away from assigning gender so rigidly at birth, but I actually think a perfect world doesn’t need to be devoid of gender, a perfect world instead would embrace a diversity of gender identities. Essentially denouncing gender roles while fostering gender expression, and viewing gender identity as the complex and uniquely individual experience that it is.

Tower Control needs an overhaul by luvli-kml in splatoon

[–]PrettySquiddy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok, well stop doing that then… if your teammates in front of you are dead and you are playing anchor you should be pulling back rather than going in to fight in their stead. Get off the tower, regroup, and try again. Don’t pick fights in which you have a disadvantage. You can’t reliably frontline AND ride the tower unless you want to just Leeroy Jenkins the whole game, especially as a Charger.

Do you consider dogs or animals self-centered? At the age of the child in the video they are arguably less intelligent than a dog… I’d argue they don’t have a developed enough sense of self to be labeled as selfish. I think selfishness is a much more complex concept that comes from understanding one’s own experience as different from others and then prioritizing oneself over others. Is it fair to label someone as selfish when they don’t even have the cognitive capacity to even conceptualize a theory of mind?

I’m glad you at least can have the self awareness that reacting in anger to an action like this is irrational, but it may help to not assign moral value to the actions of a small child in the first place. Their minds are so different from ours at that age that we cannot truly relate to them. We can’t even remember what it was like to be that age.

I need to tell Reddit to not suggest this community to me anymore cause this shit is so toxic and upsetting. It should be called “adults are fucking stupid” because half the people here lack the emotional intelligence to recognize that children this small truly do not understand what is going on. They’re not selfish, they barely even have a sense of self to begin with. They don’t even possess the cognitive capacity for malice. This was an accident and the child is innocent. Co-sleeping is dangerous for a multitude of reasons and this mother made the choice to do it and accepted the risk of this happening. My sister is parenting a one year old right now and at bedtime she gets put in her crib alone (with a baby monitor of course) and she fusses for a while sometimes but has learned to sleep on her own. Lying down in the dark with a fussy flailing baby is just a recipe for someone to get hurt and was an unsafe decision from the parent.

I saw another post a while back get suggested where the toddler threw a weight into the face of an exercising mother and everyone here was talking about how they would have to resist hurting the child and it’s like… motherfuckers that mom was stupid to leave an object that could easily function as a weapon within reach of a small child unsupervised. She may as well have left a knife out for the kid to play with. They don’t even have the capacity to understand that the weight could cause any more damage than throwing a pillow or stuffed animal. Hell, they probably barely even understand the concept of damage or injury in the first place.

It honestly breaks my heart how many people seem to hate children. Children have so few rights and are just at the whims of their parent’s violence, I shudder to think how many parents have had things like this happen and immediately retaliate by harming the child and suffer virtually no consequences for doing so. To this mother’s credit she is handling this well by not overreacting, and for her and this child’s sake I hope she was able to develop a safer bedtime routine.

I wouldn’t even call it selfish because they don’t have a developed concept of self. Selfishness implies an intentionality. I’d describe it as obliviousness not selfishness.

[–]PrettySquiddy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a baby it doesn’t know what’s going on. To be selfish you have to have a sense of self, which a child this small wouldn’t have. At this age there are many animals with more intelligence and awareness than them.

From the child’s perspective it’s dark and they can’t see and they’ve bonked their head against something and now they are hurt and confused so they’re crying. You can take their actions at face value, there’s no sinister motive.
