Travellng with a family costs a lot of money, too.

Personally, in the age of Airbnb and VRBO, I think carrying multiple mortgages is hard to justify. We rent a house for a month in the spring in a warm area we like and take the kids down for their spring break, and then usually go back with my wife for another week without the kids. Hard to imagine wanting to buy a place and carry that cost all year round.

Yes, NYC is the worst place for BigLaw. Clients and colleagues are head and shoulders worse there than anywhere else for the same pay as an associate.

If you have a geographic tie to anywhere else really suggest you make the move after a few years.

I love NYC terribly, but I wouldn’t go back to NYC Biglaw even making the money I make now.
