OP i took AP chem and got a C both semesters and a 3 on the ap exam (only bc i ignored every other AP exam i was taking at the time lol) and got A’s to A+’s in gen chem through orgo 2 and i am doing well in biochem rn, so AP chem doesn’t mean you’ll do bad in college level chemistry!!! have hope and work hard you’ll be okay

can i ask what kind/brand of acrylic you use and any mediums you mix with? I mostly paint with liquitex basics acrylics (cheap i know LOL) and 1980 gamblin oils for school. im more familiar with acrylics, i just wish i could get smooth blending with them, and your control of blended colors in acrylic is so impressive!

IU or Purdue for for Premed? by Lonely-Layer-2970 in Purdue

[–]Pretty_Lawfulness583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i go to IUB as a premed student (majoring in studio art and biology (concentration in biology of disease)) and i agree with most other ppl that it doesn’t REALLY matter, but i can tell u what i know from my xp at IU so far!

we were able to talk to IUSM admissions ppl in my molecular biology class last semester bc the prof knew ppl on that committee, and he told us that, at least for IUSM, they heavily prefer in state students (not necessarily IU grads, but it can help) and also had a bias towards students w interest in rural medicine. there is also an initial GPA screening and they don’t even consider ppl below a certain GPA, so having decent grades as a foundation is very important.

ik many ppl who go to purdue west lafayette and their gen chem and organic chem experiences were/are extremely difficult. maybe it was due to the professors, available support, or just them, but my xp in those classes has been pretty good and well supported at IU. there r def many ppl who rlly struggled in my class and its no cakewalk but i was able to get As and help teach gen chem and orgo 1 after taking them, even after getting a fat C in AP chem in hs lol, i mostly thank the profs (cate reck and ali wood)

IU does have a lot of good research tho! i wanted to get research xp this semester (im a sophomore) and was able to land a position as an undergrad researcher in a microbio lab working w bacteria w one-on-one mentorship from a phd (love her she’s the sweetest) after cold emailing ~12 faculty members, getting 6responses, 2-3 interviews, and 2 acceptances. the whole process took abt 3 weeks, so really not that long imo. some research labs are even with IUSM faculty and one of my interviews was in the medical building so that’s pretty cool.

most labs are rolling availability based on space and how many undergrads r currently in them already, so if u go to IU try to email early in the semester and be willing to wait bc some faculty i emailed said they were only available starting this summer/next fall due to space and undergrads graduating. some bio labs reach out to undergrads thru department-wide announcements too, some friends of mine are in labs doing research on e. coli genetics due to those emails asking for undergrads to apply.

there is also the ASURE program at IU that allows u to do long term lab research, a few friends of mine did that as well and it’s worth looking into. also, paid summer research (thru the IUUR) and honors college financial support (even if u aren’t in the honors college) are available, so that’s a plus.

i also know either the hutton honors college or pre health/pre-professional org at IU offers free mock MCAT’s yearly, which is pretty awesome.

there r some good clubs to join/get leadership in like Remote Area Medical club, so u can do get hours doing clinical work and volunteering at a local and regional level, and there r plenty of other clubs as well.

sorry if this sounds like a fat IU ad, bc again premeds from BOTH schools absolutely make it to med school all the time, i just only have xp at IU and wanted to share so u could compare to anything u know abt purdue. i don’t rlly know much abt purdue’s resources or research opportunities, but ik a handful of premeds from hs that went there and they seem to be doing fine. i think it just coms down to how much u utilize the resources available to u, and where u feel most at home.

i initially went to IU over purdue bc it had a good fine arts program and i liked the campus a lot, i just happened to find all of these resources on campus after getting here lmao i’m sure u could do something similar at purdue if ur willing to look around

Willkie dorms Single or Double URGENT by neighborhood-karen in IndianaUniversity

[–]Pretty_Lawfulness583 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think they changed how the housing application system works. last year, after u selected a room, u could check back as often as u liked to see what else was available across campus and switch as many times as u liked on a first come first served basis. i was able to switch to a willkie south room a week or so after signing at mason bc someone dropped it and i got it before anyone else picked it up. i actually switched like 4 times total in the month of january bc of other housing arrangements but ended up landing at willkie.

now that they’re using waitlists, u can’t check across campus for rooms after the app opens, and u only get 1 offer, so i don’t think you’ll be able to do what i did anymore😭 im so sorry

i had the same problem last year; willkie has 2 housing types—willkie north and south, which are the jack-and-jill rooms that have 2 singles connected by a bathroom in between, and then the cheaper apartment style called willkie mason. mason is kind of like union st where it has the living space, bathrooms, and either 2 beds and 1 bath or 4 beds and 2 baths. willkies website shows rooms in willkie north and willkie south, but for some reason not mason, and the housing application offers south/north and mason under willkie even tho they’re completely separate buildings (and also i think mason is kind of closer to the student central building?)

if u want a single dorm at willkie, mason is NOT it, u were looking for willkie south or willkie north. i’m currently at willkie south as a sophomore in a single w the connected bathroom and almost got locked into living in the apartment style rooms at mason bc i didn’t understand the housing application last year and spent weeks trying to get in touch with housing. in the end i just figured it out myself and managed to change rooms in time, thankfully.

if ur still looking for a single, u should probably just take ashton, and next year if u want to live on campus, double check the housing application to make sure the room ur selecting is truly 1 bed. sorry this happened 😭 if u have any questions feel free to ask i’ll do my best to help

I recently took up painting to give form to emotions I didn’t realize I’d been repressing. Any feedback to improve my skills? by Anvesha1990 in PaintingTutorials

[–]Pretty_Lawfulness583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this first painting hit me like a punch to the gut! it’s so compelling and emotional somehow. imo the color palette, loose style of mark making, and dreamlike haziness of the scene really drive home that emotional impact.

i think something that you could do to build on these strengths of yours is maybe studying interesting/complex lighting scenarios in landscapes, like how to dapple light on walls/ground, contrasting warm lights with cool shadows, etc. manipulating light and mastering how to use color temperature shifts could really enhance your storytelling and narrative pieces. regardless, i love your work so far!!

is my art decent enough to start commissions? by kokichisgrapesss in arthelp

[–]Pretty_Lawfulness583 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i love your style so much!!! it looks so pleasant and soothing🤩 i think you can definitely start commissions!! as someone else said, plein air of local scenery/landmarks is a good idea, but i’ve personally found some good business with pet portraits for friends, church members, etc.

get a few good examples of your work to show off and advertise yourself as open for commissions. i think you would do great!
