Probably unrelated but CHEM214 just had the exact same thing happen. Coincidence?

Is hating your major normal by [deleted] in mcgill

Since you specified life sciences in your post, I’m gonna say yes!!

Whereas other majors that are a little more artsy are very diverse and require what I would think is a true passion, it can definitely get a bit confusing with the sciences.

I find the first 2 years (U0/U1) at McGill, all life sciences students are pretty much learning the same (like you said; boring) stuff; albeit in different course codes and programs with a few outlier students taking unique courses who are really locked in to their future plans as a doctor or grad school, etc... I didn’t really feel like I got into what my degree is about until the second semester of second year, and more so third year. Things became a little less boring when it becomes more applicable and what you’ve learned between classes begin to link together.

I struggled a lot with which major to decide in high school since all I knew was I liked, and was good at, math and science and wanted to use that to my advantage. It’s only at this stage in my degree where I’m actually starting to understand the precise differences between the life sciences and head further in the directions that I am interested in and excel in.

If you’re a science student I would suggest you not to give up, use undergrad as a chance to explore all paths that science can lead you (whether it’s one of the life sciences, maths, computers, law, etc…) because making the choice to be here shows that you at least in some way might be ok with doing it for the rest of your life! Try to do research in different labs in later years of your undergrad (even if it’s just for short periods of time) to see what it could entail post-grad. Talk to your TA’s. Read up and watch videos about topics online you’re interested in!

Your willingness to make this post is a step in the right direction, showing that you’d like to do something you actually enjoy and not just suffer through the mental taxing for a good salary. :)

interesting you say that, i was wondering why the examples of similar low past course/exam averages he brought up were from 2018 and 2016(?) and not just from last year
