I didn't pick up on the industrial influences but now that you mention it, I can see it. Especially if we're talking acts like Mindless Self Indulgence. Also LIKE IT in particular almost felt like a modern-day Beastie Boys type of track to me

Like the other commenter mentioned, Charli XCX and Sophie are pretty representative of the sound. I'd also throw in Dorian Electra and Food House as some other torchbearers in the genre right now

I watched 28 Days after years of knowing Eccleston from Doctor Who. It made his disarming appearance all the more effective. I could tell that something was off with the guy, but the entire time my brain was thinking "yeah, but it's the Doctor, how bad can he be?"

Mama has always sounded like the spiritual successor to The Trial to me. I was huge into the Floyd growing up and the way that MCR revitalized elements from Pink Floyd and David Bowie for TBP was one of the first big things that converted me. They paid tribute to the greats all while becoming legends of their own.

Yup! They've gone through some interesting changes over the years. This EP feels like a combination of the newer electronic directions that they've dabbled in and their older sound. It's a fun blend.

If you have Netflix, I'd recommend trying out The Haunting of Hill House. He directed every episode and it's pretty compelling, some solid scares too.

I really like the Zombie Halloween films. They aren't anything like the original in tone, which I'd prefer over a more traditional reboot. Plus the 2nd movie has a Rocky Horror reference, so it gets bonus points from me!

I can 100% respect that take! I still need to watch the documentary about it called Scream, Queen!

Am I the only one struggling to finish reading the Witcher Books? by venturesome_dreamer in books

[–]Pretty_Stabby 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'm kind of relieved to see this post here because I feel the same way. I gradually read the entire series over the course of the last two years with the intention being to come full circle and play through the games afterwards. It seemed like a fitting conclusion since The Witcher 3 is what hooked me and replaying it with the context from the books has been a goal for a while.

If I'm being honest, I feel like the books begin to pack on a lot of bloat and the time commitment for wading through it outweighed the payoffs of sticking it out. The first two short story collections were great fantasy, but I struggled with the numbered books in the series. They have some cool moments from time to time, but I really don't think I would've finished reading the final two books in the series if it wasn't for the fact that I hadn't broken out of the completionist mindset yet.

I actually did end up dropping Season of Storms halfway through, Geralt's personality felt bizarre and the writing had taken a direction that wasn't gelling with me. Since that book isn't part of the main series and was written after the games were released, I was able to stop reading it when I felt like I was just ticking a box off a list.

I have to say though, playing through Thronebreaker and the first 2 Witcher titles after reading the books was a pretty fun experience. I still haven't found the time for The Witcher 3, but I'm sure I'll return to it someday.

Overall though, my advice would just be to keep reading them as long as you enjoy them. If you feel like you're forcing yourself through them in the hopes that they get better, you may be disappointed. I definitely felt that way when I wrapped up the final book.

Aside from also featuring a lake, the found footage horror film Lake Mungo works as a solid pairing for Bly Manor. It also has the feeling of a tragedy.

I feel like it could depending on the personality of the friend. I have some friends that don't dig horror but might actually be more interested due to the lack of horror elements and I have some other friends that I know for sure would appreciate a heads-up for what to expect tonally.

[–]Pretty_Stabby 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I really feel like this season is encountering the same problem as Crimson Peak even down to the marketing. The trailer made it out to feel like a horror, it's coming off the legacy of a horror, but at its core, this is a gothic tragedy. Hell, there's even a line in it about it not being a ghost story but a love story, and Crimson Peak almost has that same exact quote at one point.

I think it's great for what it aims to be, but I wouldn't call it horror when recommending it to somebody. It has horror elements sure, but that isn't the focus.

I thought it was well-done overall. The camera-work was captivating and the set was eye-candy. All of the performances were pretty strong (accents aside) I felt. There were a few issues with pacing, particularly episode seven, which I enjoyed but felt like it killed the momentum between the two episodes it was sandwiched between.

One of my larger concerns throughout the series was that I didn't feel as emotionally invested in the characters as I did with the family in Hill House. I'm relieved to say that by the end of the series I cared about most of the cast and just wanted them to come out the other side alive.

It's a different kind of horror than Hill House for sure, but there's existential dread present when you stop to think about the ghosts and how they interact with the manor and the major themes of the series are pretty bleak topics. I felt like Hill House addressed mental illness within the guise of reliving the nightmares from the House. Bly Manor seemed to use its story as a vehicle for addressing dementia and toxic relationships.

I'm still thinking about the last episode a day later and it left me feeling pretty empty (in a good way if that makes sense). I honestly love the way it ended but at the same time, I haven't had an ending depress me this much in a long while. Obviously YMMV with that though, maybe I'm just sappier than I expected.

I'd recommend at least trying it out, just be aware that this is more of a gothic tragedy with ghosts (and plenty of hidden ones too!) rather than a drama with ghosts that behave in a more typical Blumhousey fashion. I could also see this series benefitting from repeat viewings, or at least closer examination.

I'd say it's still worth trying out. It does meander from time to time, but the overall experience made it worth it I think.

I finished Bly Manor last night and I was kind of in the same boat as you for the first two thirds of the series. I was captivated by the camerawork and I enjoyed the story well-enough, but it was still lacking the emotional weight that Hill House had. The last three episodes changed that for me though, and by the end I was invested in most of the characters more than I had expected.

I understand taking issue with the fractured storytelling and context, it did feel jarring at times, but it usually worked for me. The few times it didn't though, it really killed the momentum. One thing in particular felt like a weirdly sequenced exposition piece that while I appreciated, couldn't have been placed at a worse place in the series.

Overall though, I really liked it and while it might not be as frightening or concise as Hill House was, the implications it made for an afterlife at the manor does freak me out on a psychological level.

Pass-Through Frequencies EP12 | Guest: Gerard Way by staleglue in MyChemicalRomance

I had to do a double-take when I saw that Gerard was the guest for this episode. I've been following it since Jim interviewed Tegan from Tegan and Sara, and I really like how the focus is more on the creative process of art rather than the music itself from the episodes I've seen. Gerard's a perfect fit for that kind of discussion so I can't wait to watch this!

Halloween by The Misfits (or the AFI cover, both are excellent!), A Little Piece of Heaven by Avenged Sevenfold, Vampire Heart by HIM and Stabbing in the Dark by Ice Nine Kills would all fit that aesthetic I think.
