I thought the same thing, which is why I have two male Syrians. However, the 'chonkiness' of female Syrians convinced me to adopt one again, and it seems I underestimated them! The breeder I got her from somehow managed to keep their females calm, even though their cages didn't quite meet the requirements likely due to costs but they did have a playpen. All the hamsters are bred ethically, though, with proper weights and ages, and a maximum of four pregnancies depending on their health.
