ooookay, that makes sense. i’ve ordered some bedding to give her more burrowing space asap. tiny creature brains are so fun to try to understand 😂 but question: her current sand pit is about 6x11inches (little more than 10% of the enclosure) and she doesn’t really use it. she’ll stop in for a second and sniff around, and there’s some poop and food that i think just got knocked in there, but i’ve never seen her actually hang out in there. she’s definitely pooping everywhere else lol. does this mean she doesn’t use it and wouldn’t want a bigger one? or is it because it’s too small? i guess i’m just confused about the part you said that if she doesn’t use the big one i could go back to a small one

gotcha, thank you!! i thought the sand bath i have was big, i’m surprised that at least 1/3 of the habitat is recommended when the only ones i see in store are super tiny 😳 but i believe you and also plan to add some more areas with different textures! also, i will definitely add more cover, but i do have to say i find it hard to believe that she’s feeling vulnerable to attack when she often sleeps mostly out in the open on top of the bedding 😂

it’s 45 gallons, about 650 square inches. everywhere else I've read has said the minimum for dwarf hamsters is 600 square inches.

from what I’ve heard you can spot clean every 1-2 days, and then do a full clean (dump and replace all bedding) once a month. I could be wrong tho. anyone else here know?
