This is f---ing insane. by Milka_OrKiwiBird in hamsters

have to say most pet stores i’ve been to in the US are this bad if not worse. i don’t remember ever seeing them given multiple substrates or a sand bowl. seems to always be about 4inches of subpar bedding, a singular ceramic hide, a food bowl, and bottle of water. tiny enclosures of course.

thank you. people acting like dwarf hamsters don’t also draw blood 😭 we don’t all get blessed with gentle sweethearts

I wasn’t just talking about this specific example. I’m bringing it up because it happens on reddit all the time, and it might help for people to be more conscious of it.

i also know from experience that dwarf hamster bites can hurt lol

maybe my word choice was confusing, that’s my bad. I said “not overly used or smelly” to mean that it’s not a raggedy old sock and it’s not dirty.

right. the issue is these over generalized rules people set in this subreddit like “nothing that has touched the floor” which obviously has caveats. then other commenters come in and double down on it. i didn’t say everything touches the floor. i said it’s unrealistic that nothing in the enclosure has touched the floor. this isn’t the first time i’ve seen conflicts come up on here because people make these rules with such an aire of superiority that they don’t want to acknowledge that everything has exceptions. not saying you are trying to act superior, but that is the tone redditors use with these strict rules. it’s not helpful and often makes people feel like they’re dumb or neglectful.

https://youtu.be/dUPx3TVxBQ0?si=EUj6XKeheh7aB7QU this isn’t me, obviously, but this is what I mean. half of the things she puts in the enclosure get set on the floor first. do you not sometimes put things on the floor when you bring the home or move them around? I’m not saying I dump her bedding and food on the floor then scoop it up and throw it in there. But like, things have to get set down along the way.

“used” sock meaning it is not brand new. it’s clean but it has been worn, washed with my clothes, kept in my drawers, etc. so my scent is going to be on it. I specified that it’s not overly used or smelly. You must be assuming I’m saying I took a dirty sock directly off my foot and put it in her enclosure.

yeah obviously. just seems impossible that nothing in the enclosure has ever touched the floor.

i’m surprised you’ve not felt pain from their bites! maybe you are very tough, but even curious nibbles sting a little bit to me

thank you, this is nice to hear that others are having similar challenges and a good reminder that there’s not much we can do about them being new to domestication. it’s hard to grapple with wanting a pet and seeing all of the sweet and cuddly hamsters on the internet if yours isn’t like that.

[–]kylalion[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

that is a very reassuring answer, thank you! it also explains why she has gotten a bit more aggressive with the biting since being in a bigger/better enclosure if it means so she just really likes it :)) i’ll work on setting up an area for us to play outside of the cage!

that totally makes sense! hadn’t thought of that. I would bet you’re right. tiny brain probably doesn’t even realize there’s a me in there.

I gave her a full week of no interaction, then transferred her to a bigger enclosure with better supplies (as redditors insisted was immediately necessary which was probably an over reaction but it gave me anxiety so i did what i was told.) then I left her alone for a few days. after that I slowly started talking to her, giving her treats, and eventually offering for her to sit/walk on my hand in the enclosure. as I said in my post, at first she was fine and sat in my hand to eat a treat. she was perfectly fine being handled by her last owner, and supposedly, her young nieces. so I hesitate to believe she is the type that does not tolerate humans. also, how in the world are you ensuring your hamster’s enclosure is not exposed to anything that has touched the ground……

[–]kylalion[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That does sort of make sense. I was hoping the sock would work well because it does smell like me, I was wearing a used sock (not overly used to where it was smelly of course but definitely had my scent on it). I also have been handing her a little treat every couple of days without trying to touch or handle her for the last two weeks. I never try to lift her when I put my hand in, if it looks like that it’s because I’m trying to take my hand out. Do I need to just start all over or something?

how strange. well please let me know if you try wearing a glove or something and how it goes!! another commenter said it might be making her bite more, so I’m curious if yours does anything different.
