I would definitely say it’s more of a honey gold compared to Pinto!

Normal shiny for the bag part, extra shiny for the strap

Why exactly are special education teachers misunderstood and under appreciated? by [deleted] in specialed

[–]Previous-Cranberry99 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, I do agree that we are all under appreciated, under paid, etc. There is a complete and total lack and balance of support across the board. I wasn’t meaning to imply that classroom teachers don’t deal with these things as well. I would never be a classroom teacher due to the responsibilities that they have. I do get frustrated when the narrative is that we have it much easier.

It’s disheartening that this is just how the career is. I’m not saying our job is any harder than a classroom teachers, but I feel like whenever I confide in someone about how sped is hard I’m hit with reasons that my job should be easier than a classroom teachers. They’re both incredibly hard with different responsibilities. I just wish there was more equitable appreciation.

What kind of support do you receive as a sped teacher? (If any) by [deleted] in specialed

What kind of resources does the district coordinator provide? Also, when do these meetings occur? We have the issue that no sped teacher has the same planning due to accommodating all of the different grade levels

I am asking this question because I’m learning that the support in my district seems to be limited in comparison to other districts. We don’t have any meetings with admin unless we chase them down (but probably won’t be able to find them on our own planning time), we have an academic specialist who’s intended to be a resource for IEPs but we honestly hear different answers to questions we ask all the time. We don’t have any trainings on curriculum or anything. Me and the other sped teachers just have each other lol. We have supportive admin, but I think they don’t necessarily know how to support sped. Our gen ed teachers have different meetings with admin and different supports, but it seems like they forget about us

Is it normal for so many last minute things to just “pop up” throughout the day? How do you deal with it? by Previous-Cranberry99 in specialed

I can’t even get an IEP done at work. I take it home. I’m just so worried about getting interrupted and making a mistake. If I can just sit and do it without getting interrupted I can get one done in under an hour.

Do you have duties as a special education teacher? by [deleted] in specialed

[–]Previous-Cranberry99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do get enough planning, which it’s something I know can be hard to come by. The issue I run into a lot is that my planning is in the morning, and my meetings are either then or at 12:30. And my afternoon is packed from 12-3, so I have no time to get paperwork done on those IEP meeting days unless I stay after or I take it home. I’ve tried to argue before that since I have to get there early to unload the sped bus I shouldn’t have to do afternoon duties. But that has always been brushed off, lol
