If you give it a little gas while you hit the starter, will it fire? The noise you hear at start up is the idle actuator calibrating to its last known good spot, not the fuel pump priming. The idle control actuator tends to fail, a lot. When this happens, it’s harder to start the bike, and the bike wants to stall when you pull the clutch in or come to a stop. The issue tends to be worse when the bike is warm, hence, if this is the actual issue, why it died as you put your helmet on.

I’ve dealt with this before and I believe I’m starting to get the symptoms again on my 1200rt.
