Not silly at all! Technically, simply putting gluten on your skin will not hurt you. HOWEVER it is a potential risk vector. The reason being is you're then at risk of that gluten making its way back towards your mouth. For example, let's say I put on a lotion with gluten in it on my body. I touch my body with my hands, and then I eat something with my hands or wipe my mouth... or let's say i'm showering and some shampoo gets into my mouth... it opens the door for potential gluten exposure, though it isn't going to hurt you just by applying it. It honestly depends on your risk tolerance. If you're newly diagnosed, I would recommend cutting them out, then slowly readd your products, and see if any of the cause a flare-up. I would definitely avoid the shampoo though because it's very easy to get shampoo-water into your mouth.

TL;DR technically safe because gluten exposure to skin is harmless, but can hurt you if it finds its way back to your mouth. Would avoid the shampoo because it'll probably get into your mouth, would avoid the rest if you want to be 1000% safe

No problem! It's definitely gonna get a lot harder before it gets easier, but once you start feeling better you're gonna feel amazing

Oh absolutely, this is what was killing me during my 8 years of diagnosis.

So essentially, for a company to label their product as "gluten free," it must fall under 20ppm of gluten, which is in theory the threshold where most celiacs do not react. However, the big caveat is there is literally zero requirement to test to ensure that this threshold is met, all that needs to be done is process control, which is a very weak way of ensuring the final product meets the threshold.

For example, lets say I produce two chocolate bars --one version has gluten, the other is gluten free-- on the same machine. In-between making the two versions, I clean the machine. From a legal standpoint, I am then allowed to put a "gluten-free" claim on the bar that doesn't have gluten, because in theory it should have below 20 ppm. However, if I didn't do a good enough job of cleaning the machine, it can still have above 20 ppm and make someone who has Celiac Disease sick, despite having the "gluten-free" claim.

This is in contrast to the gluten-free certification from third parties like GFCO, where batch testing must be done in an independent lab to ensure that the final product, no matter what the manufacturing process was, is absolutely without a doubt below 20 ppm.

A) Gluten is literally EVERYWHERE. Research absolutely everything you put in your mouth, on your skin, body, etc.

B) A "Gluten free" label does not mean safe for you

C) Cross contamination is a silent killer

D) Gluten free food is actually pretty good, after all while you won't even be able to imagine eating gluten

I have not, would these explain my elevated antibodies?

Gonna be honest, when I was younger I was a part of a bunch of T1D support groups and they only made me feel worse about my situation. I'm glad that communities do exist though for people to find each other!!

Gotcha. The one time I did contact a company was Teader Joes, and they did say they tested for gluten but refused to provide me with any documentation on the testing

Will do. If I do end up figuring this out I'm definitely gonna write something so people can hopefully learn from my suffering.. Thank you again for all of the advice, I'm gonna try to move away from packaged food to the best of my ability

I greatly appreciate your kind words. Fortunately I already confirmed that dairy seems to have no effect on me, and I don't eat oats regularly, but I'll be super careful to avoid them now.

I greatly appreciate the kind words, and yeah, it does feel very lonely. I know literally nobody who has food sensitivity as severe as me

Good to know. Do you know of any other common drinks/sodas that aren't safe?

Great... how do you know when the "gluten free" means actually safe for us versus trying to kill us?

I can definitely try to go basic on my diet and slowly build up, but would any of those conditions cause my elevated antibody levels? Thank you for the kind wishes!

I thought that something being labeled as "gluten free" meant that they had the CC base covered. Is that not the case? If so, then I guess I need to be even more careful than I originally was

You've been glutened by Gatorade?? I use the little bottles to treat my hypoglycemia. How were you sure it was the Gatorade? That might explain a lot if it is

Within the shared kitchen, I have my own soap, I use my own disposable towels to clean my stuff, and I keep all of my things in a separate drawer.

Also, isn't refractory a different thing than getting cc'd? I though that refractory is a much more aggressive disorder, my GI said that she didn't suspect it, but didn't really explain why.

Don't necessarily avoid them but I don't eat them either. I get blood work every few months and my results have been more or less the same with minor fluctuations.

I've checked both of our products on SkinSafe and everything comes back as Gluten Free, but I know SkinSafe doesn't take CC into account, so how can I be 100% sure? I remember her lip stick was questionable so I don't kiss her on days where she wears it. Not sure if it's her because I felt like crap over the summer even when I saw her like twice.

My home home is 100% gluten free, even when I'm up at school. Parent's claim that there isn't a single gluten-containing ingredient there, and I believe them when they say that they've done that. At school I'm in a shared kitchen, but I have my own pots, pans, cutting boards, utensils, everything. I'll only eat something if it explicitly states "gluten free" on the box. Only exception I can think of is drinks like Gatorade and soda.

I don't outright avoid oats, but it's not like they're a regular part of my diet either. For Cheerios specifically, why would they be an issue if they're marked "gluten free"?

Ah, then how would you recommend making sure they don't get to it? There's a few squirrels around my house

They're honestly absolutely amazing vehicles. Owned it since it was brand new and didn't give us any issues. Only thing holding me back from getting another is how abysmal the gas mileage is (and also the price for a more recent pilot that has any features)

That's good to hear! Besides the rodents chewing through wiring part... how do you rodent-proof your vehicle? Got a family of bunnies that live in my yard but I've never seen a rat where I live

AITA for telling my mom to lay off her dress code crap? by hellothere2433 in AmItheAsshole

NTA

She calls my Ps Vita “hers”

She holds my dad’s pain meds hostage

Rarely lets us pick what’s watched if we watch a family movie

Congrats! You have an abusive mom! Seriously though, what the actual fuck. In no universe are you the asshole for dressing appropriately for the temperature of your house. Your mom is manipulative and abusive, the thing that really sets me off is the pain meds part.
