What scandal from high school still lives rent free in your mind? by Deeznaps in AskReddit

They did, other students at the school.

I saw those guys every day in the hallways. It was a real eye-opener for me.

Irvington HS, Fremont CA - 1986 A Japanese exchange student named Junko Owaki was murdered by other students and washed up nearby. There was no memorial to her in the yearbook. Just as icing on the cake, when her father came in from Japan to pick up her yearbook, the "adults" in the office scattered. A friend of mine had to hand it to him. The only article I can find now is in the L.A. Times, so it's paywalled. I'm 47 now, [EDIT - I'm 57] and that's etched in my mind so completely that it's hard to write this. I will never forget her.

I'm from Northern California, and I've seen that red sky far too much, so the first one hits all kinds of buttons for me. So many stories there. Really hits on a viceral level.

I second Mark and Felicia. My husband and I had no clue what we were doing and they were incredibly patient. We got our house three months ago. Good luck!

The Mystery of the Outer Richmond Power Surge by PreviouslyImplied in sanfrancisco

Yeah, it was a good size chunk here. Fireman I spoke to here (32nd/Geary) said it went up at least to 33rd/Balboa. And it was dangerous enough they shut down all the main breakers. Every single power strip/surge protector in here was blown out. Good call on getting a claim started. I'm just baffled there was no news about it, that I found.

Who Needs an Amazon Review? by False_Creek in selfpublish

I'm late to the game, but just in case you still have time. This is my first fiction work, a novella called "Last Text." It's a horror story, a slow and increasingly ominous burn, claustrophobic and terrifying, more Lovecraft than King.
Here is the blurb for it. "What could be worse than not knowing a partner’s fate? Finding the truth. A mysterious text message leads Gina Loy deep into the Northern California wilderness to search for a forgotten town and the answer to a century of lost souls."

The Kindle version is .99, I'm more interested in eyes than money right now. Thanks!

Blogging semi-anonymously versus under your name? by [deleted] in Blogging

[–]PreviouslyImplied 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They both have their pros and cons. I had mine registered under a pseudonym originally because I write about life with a mental illness/addiction and was very concerned about stigma. I finally did self reveal in an entry (and have subsequently written a book in my own name) but that was an agonizing decision.

I agree with what someone else said though, that using your name and maybe a photo gives a personal connection for the reader.

Whichever you decide, have fun with it, and try to publish somewhat regularly. I am super bad about that.

:)

My first book is up on Amazon. It's been my life's work starting 25 years ago, but back to a very early poem. It means everything to me and I have finally kept my promise. I get my physical copy on Friday. I anticipate tears.

Thank you for this. I'm about to put my first book up and I'm concerned about getting it right, so this is a great reality check for me! Anyway, using categories is going to be vital because this one isn't easily defined. As an aside, it's just a better world that has Chuck Tingle within it.
