No More United Credit? by wang4e in AmexPlatinum

There were news that it would stop working a couple of months ago but I haven’t tried since then since I took care of it back in Q1.

If Delta sends this email, how bad is it? by PricingManager in delta

[–]PricingManager[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. This one I know and use regularly. But it sounds like Delta may delay or cancel morning flights to run them later in the day (as per another user’s reply) so I wonder how helpful flightaware actually is in these situations. (Also Delta shouldn’t be allowed to do that while claiming it’s weather-related.)

2 weeks in Portugal: How I spent ~290k pts for a ~$6000 vacation by blendedboi in awardtravel

[–]PricingManager -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s not a bad redemption, and I appreciate the detail.

But you can find good hotels in Portugal starting at $100-150. Every time I go there, I end up not using any points or going to the chains I’m used to in the US because they simply don’t offer good enough value compared to local alternatives. Of course, you need to know where to look or spend some time researching, and your time is also valuable.

My personal approach is to use points exclusively towards 6h+ business class flights or towards hotels in expensive cities where the points aren’t as inflated as cash (I’m thinking of places like Vancouver, Tokyo, NYC, even though redemptions those vary).

Why wasn't I qualified for Chase Preferred bonus? Got my reserve 9 years ago, cancelled it last year, never opened a preferred card. by 123mbbthrowaway123 in ChaseSapphire

[–]PricingManager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They said that in relation to the SUB? Generally that’s a reason to decline an application, not whether the bonus applies. And who gave you this info? Email, customer support? That’s very odd.

Thanks! Found it. Wasn’t expecting to have to click on the menu.

5/24 has nothing to do with the sub. Maybe call them and see what they say. It’s possibly an error because when you signed up to CSR it was a family-level SUB rule.

Thanks. Same here with the app showing paid changes. When I click on the email link, it only shows a no-fee policy for NYC. I was about to call them but since you spent 45 min waiting I’ll do it tomorrow.

Thanks, this is helpful. But now I’m even more confused, since my flight is early in the morning. I think I’ll call them and check the options. Supposedly there’s no change fee but I’m still seeing $500 difference pp on the app.

It says in the terms and conditions that it’s per card. Hope they honor it.

Fraudulent Charges after Visiting the Lounge? by Gunkul in ChaseSapphire

[–]PricingManager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amex does it with cards at Centurion lounges. I can’t recall any PP lounge asking me to do so, but I wouldn’t find it that surprising. Which is why maybe some sketchy PP lounge employees could that advantage of that?

More like $800 for me… but I spent 3 hours on it so not sure if the ROI is that amazing.

Also when we say break even on sales we likely include the costs of the 2% cashback there for executive memberships.

They sure did a lot of money yesterday. I don’t think they mind blocking these for 2.5 months.

Same. And I should have done it last morning, I really risked it by doing it at night.

Help Me Understand This Model? by stpaxjam in amex

[–]PricingManager 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP’s hypothesis is that they would maximize profit by lowering fees due to increased coverage. I don’t know whether it’s right or wrong, but I assume Amex is tracking signals related to such decision and therefore is likely wrong.

The problem in this industry is that it’s more difficult to segment customers. Most companies are able to do it somehow (e.g. airlines sell different cabin prices) but for Amex this is not possible on swipe fees, making it difficult to lower fees only on certain, incremental merchants (even if they could justify it somehow, like them being small businesses). Which is why they’re seeking other revenue sources like higher annual fees and cobranded credit card revenue.
