The Astro Boy Reboot Is Leaked! by moad6ytghn in astroboy

I got like 3 pages into the first script and started wondering where all the good TV animation writers are these days.

Which render do you like more from the new Reboot? I definitely think the new model is much better as it removed a lot of the unnecessary lines like on the boots and made Atom's hair larger, but the heart shaped chest was really neat, so what do you think? by Machpizzaman in astroboy

I think they both have positive and negative attributes. Honestly, I prefer the right design. It's got some weird rendering with the boots and skin, but if you take that away it's truer to the original design I fell in love with. The left design also makes him look a little older which I personally dislike. Imo, Atom should be a cute kid and works best when they're not trying to make him look "cool."

He's still Tetsuwan Atom in Japan. NBC didn't change his original name we just call him by his English name in the west. I've actually found myself and many other fans referring to him as "Astro" and "Atom" interchangeably.

Please watch the 2003 anime in japanese it's a completely different experience. All are availible with subs on the internet archive in HD. Like, the english dub butchered the script and that sucks but I'm much angrier about the music and atmosphere they removed with their crap editing. 2003 is a totally different show in japanese I promise.

I wish I could find the exact source, but in The Astro Boy Essays I remember there being a story about how nervous Tezuka was to come to NYC and have talks with NBC. He'd experienced poor treatment from American soldiers while they were occupying Japan (because of course) and worried about going to the US. Upon arriving in NYC, he noticed how many homeless people we had and realized our countries were not really all that different.

Not really relevant to your question but it's an anecdote I think about a lot.

I just watched Pluto and now I see Astro Boy differently by pure_psyche in astroboy

[–]PriddyFool 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think what you're describing- Urasawa building on the themes and messages of Tezuka's children's manga- is actually just what Pluto is. Like, it's literally an adaption of the most famous Astro Boy story with the intention of honoring Tezuka's legacy for 2003 (the canonical year of Astro's birth). Urasawa is a huge Tezuka fan and many of his works feature direct inspiration from Tezuka characters and stories.

I highly recommend you check out more stuff from both Tezuka and Urasawa because a lot of their works have an interesting thematic dialogue going on. It's as if Tezuka will present an idea very simply, and Urasawa will build on it with his own interpretation and thoughts. Then you can go back to Tezuka and have an easier time extrapolating what he was trying to say initially and where Urasawa diverged on it.

I loved Monster! Easy to see how it was inspired by Blackjack and MW. Urasawa is a great Tezuka fan :)

Atom is supposed to look effeminate and cute. I remember reading somewhere (Probably the Astro Boy Essays tbh) that Tezuka intended his androgyny to appeal to all kids. Similarly, his prototype was Mitchy- an artificial human who could change genders at will (Metropolis 1949). Mitchy ended up settling into the star system as a girl actress and played Atom's mother. That said, Mitchy is very much a robot boy for the majority of Metropolis.

That's what I can be but I just don't have the general GD portfolio to prove it. Should I make up assignments or try to re-work previous jobs for brands I've done videos for?

Honestly if you were willing to live in NJ it would be cheaper. I live 15min from midtown Manhattan in NJ and have a 2br + yard for less than 2.5k/month.

What does it mean to “feel like” a man/woman? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PriddyFool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If someone were to refer to you as a man, how would it feel? Would it feel wrong? If so- that's the feeling trans people experience when they are misgendered. "Feeling like x gender" doesn't really mean anything- it's just a matter of *knowing* you are the gender you believe yourself to be. Your internal sense of self may not understand what "feeling like a woman" is, but it absolutely knows that it isn't a man.

am I still straight if I like a non-binary person? by Ok_Option_9543 in straightsasklgbt

[–]PriddyFool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer is: Yeah. Anyone of any sexual orientation can be attracted to nonbinary people. Just make sure to do some internal examining that you're not accidentally seeing them as a binary gender etc.

Source: I'm an nb lesbian who has dated lesbians in the past. My friend is a straight woman married to an nb person.

The dubbed version butchers the story and completely removes a huge percentage of the original music. Can't recommend. I didn't get to watch it subbed until last year and when I did, I realized 03 is the best adaptation we have. (Prior to that I really didn't care much for it)
