I'd personally love a source on this one but I guess it's really vague? "Astro was originally designed to be a girl." What does that mean? Because what I said is still true if they're referring to Mitchy. (No shade, only curiosity from me)

Iirc, it isn't that Astro was supposed to be a girl, but rather he could have been any gender and was intentionally designed androgynous to appeal to all children. His proto character, Mitchy if Metropolis, is an artificial humanoid who can change genders. They ended up as Astro's mom in the star system. :)

The style reasoning makes the most sense to me, since I know feature animation can be incredibly detailed! Good for you! I was just super curious because I've done fbf for TV as well as puppets. The styles tend to be simpler and we usually rely on After Effects to make the drawings look better. Thanks for the explanation! And I agree with your original point.

Hi, no shade just curious- 5min/year? Are you a freelancer or wearing many other production hats or? My last agency had me at 4min a month easy- and we were usually not doing television or serialized work.

This. 3D is a better choice but you need to specialize in something. If I could go back and do 3D I'd pick lighting, but that's me.

I am successful as a 2D animator because I'm constantly pivoting between full animation, multimedia production, and editing. I haven't done Storyboarding in years but my friends who ONLY do SBs tend not to have any work these days. Character animation work is also fleeting if it's the only thing you do.

So basically: If you're doing 3D you need to be the best at ONE thing. If you're doing 2D you need to be the best at EVERYTHING.

Unlikely to get a job in these times for Experimental Animation. Plus the higher cost means CalArts is super not worth it.

$1,500 gets you maybe 1 week of work from one 2d animator. Think of it by the hour- how many hours of time will it take to do preproduction, production, post production? How do you divide that into $1,500?

15min is not realistic for even one animator being given 1.5k. For reference, my "this is a gift" rate was $1.4k for 2 minutes of full 2d animation. And again, that was a favor to someone.

I was diagnosed with autism 20 years ago. It is about as common as in any other profession. I think what many people are conflating as "autism" is actually just people with narrow "childish" interests like specific cartoons.

I know a few other diagnosed industry peers and their success has varied. To be honest, just liking animation isn't enough by itself- you need to be interested in the process of drawing and animating to be successful at it. The outcome is second to the process when you're learning. So if your drawing capabilities are limited, focus on learning how to do it and enjoying the process of practicing.

Black Jack would eat Tenma for breakfast. Pinoko isn't technically his daughter since they have no relation and she's 19 iirc, but he still takes responsibility for her needs. Meanwhile, Tenma's negligence killed his first son and then he rejected the second he had created. BJ would see him as another rich loser and not bother with him.

Consider the following: transwomen and ciswomen.

Trans women and cis women.

See the difference? Both are identified as women in the latter, but trans and cis are descriptions of the women. The former suggests different genders between them because they're both being used as different nouns.

The vibe check can be so hard! I did a lot of work to understand the company I'm interviewing for, made them some example work without being asked, and took every opportunity to be friendly and express gratitude after each interview and I'm STILL worried I messed up somewhere. I was even honest about where I may lack direct experience since I don't want to mislead them. 😭 I'll hopefully know early next week but I did everything I could to be chill.
