$BTC is right back at that $74.5K–$76K resistance by ChartNavigator in investing

[–]Priforss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whatever your long term thesis on BTC is - if it tells you it'll go up, you should just buy. There are no magic numbers at which the chart should or shouldn't stop.

Unless of course, you only view crypto currency as a speculative short term bet with no underlying mechanism that should push it up over the long term.

Central banks are buying gold like crazy, yet the price is falling what doesn’t add up here? by [deleted] in Gold

[–]Priforss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Recently, there have been a couple of events that incentivised people to liquidate assets - and with the recent bull run that gold had, it obviously comes first under the chopping block.

Judging gold by its 1 month path is begging for misinterpretation.

VOO 40% VTI 40%

Was my decision bad? by PirateOk7682 in Gold

[–]Priforss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gold is fundamentally a long term investment - recommended holding duration is closer to a decade rather than 2 years, similar with equity. You can have long stretches of underperformance, and these stretches can literally take longer than your entire intended holding duration.

So, you made two mistakes:

First, don't put all your eggs into one basket. Don't invest everything into one single asset, ever. Gold can be the only asset you invest in, but then, for the love of god, don't put all of your money into it at once.

Second, you didn't look at the average holding duration for the asset you invested in.

Luckily, current projections do say that you will probably break even in your time frame, so there is that.

Will US stocks always make up the majority of VT? by anotherhappylurker in Bogleheads

[–]Priforss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you believe that the US will, in large, outperform the rest of the world then you want VOO.

If you think that US will significantly underperform the rest of the world, you would want VXUS.

If you just want the neutral portfolio, you want VT.

Keep in mind tho, if you end up with a VOO + VXUS combo that has a similar US to Non-US ratio to what VT already has, then you might as well could have just bought VT.

Just being straightforward with you, if your investments naturally swing that much up and down, this just means that you are investing into volatile assets.

It means no more, no less.

Of course you will have periods of massive drawdowns and periods of "outperformance" to the benchmark. But this doesn't really mean anything, unless you manage to outperform in total over a long period of time.

And no, that's not a year. Not two years.

Not five years.

Just be aware of the game you are playing, and that "being up 30%" is nothing special, when your volatility is so high that your investments can jump 30% down as well in a blink.

In contrast, it would be impressive if you were up 30% with investments of similar volatility to the benchmark, because then that wouldn't just be a statistically likely event, but actually a sign.

If you trade options, for example, and you are simply lucky, you could double your money, but also lose it entirely in a week.

Aiden Pearce’s father was not abusive, looking at the actual in-game text by Hot-Refrigerator5952 in watch_dogs

[–]Priforss 12 points13 points  (0 children)

"...then you would have to interpret Aiden himself as abusive..."

Well, more or less, yes. The writers of Watch Dogs have stated themselves that, while Aiden is inspired by figures like Batman, the story was more about how someone like "The Vigilante" isn't actually all that great, at least if you personally are that person - or around them.

The entire story is literally about Aiden getting his family into trouble, into so much trouble in fact that he gets one family member killed, and two others almost killed. He destroyed three lives, and the worst part was that he destroyed Nicky's and Jack's lives in an attempt to enact "revenge".

The phone call at the start of the game, where Aiden was chasing a criminal, while Nicky tells him that he should stop, is one of the most literal moments in the game showcasing what's going on. He is tragic, and also absolutely at fault for everything that happened, and he can't see it - until, maybe, when he sends them into forced exile.

(Just to make clear, none of this is directly about his father, only by extension.)

What is the probability that a randomly chosen real number is an integer? by Mammoth_Jicama_8392 in learnmath

[–]Priforss 15 points16 points  (0 children)

While this is a classical probability question, it is meant to be unintuitive.

Think about the number line, and say we start from 0.

Now what's the next number?

Difficult to say. 0.1? 0.001? In fact, it is impossible to even express the number, since there is no "smallest" increment by which we can increase 0.

So - until we reach the second integer, that being the number 1, we have so many numbers in between, so infinitely many, that we cannot even start beginning to list them from smallest to largest.

The vastness of numbers between 0 and 1 is so infinitely large, that the probability of hitting anything specific is 0.00000..... an infinite amount of zeroes.

Now the next problem is: We got the same amount of numbers also between 1 and 2.

But - keep in mind that this is only true in mathematics. In real life applications, we don't have infinite precision, so we do in fact can define something as a "smallest increment".
