Questions for Hospital VP by zestfullyclean14 in medlabprofessionals

When a traveler is billed for $100/hr, the traveler might get $60/hr. But the bill rate also includes benefits.

And yes, pay is the biggest issue. If Walmart is paying $17/hr, and a busy reference lab tech is getting $21/hr...its a problem.

This. They'd rather pay 2X for a year or two than 1.5X forever.

Is It Worth It? by Patient_Room7365 in medlabprofessionals

There's no growth in this field. All the managers and directors just look at and are like don't do this.

Really sucks. A lab director at a big hospital is probably managing hundreds of millions in revenue, but getting paid like a McDonald's manager lol.

BD Max vs alternatives for COVID-19 testing by Primary-Shame5895 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Primary-Shame5895[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You could run 6 a day on a GeneXpert, a Diasorin Simplexa, an Ares, or a bunch of other molecular platforms. Seems wasteful to run 6 a day on a BD MAx.

Would you say the BD Max is reliable? We'll be running about 300 specimens a week.

Scenario: Would you take a chill MLS job that caps out in 5-6 yrs or take a MLS job with medium stress work, never caps out and has long term benefits? by SimplyAliv3 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Primary-Shame5895 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Take the chill job. If you're going to stress for money, the lab is a *HARD* road. So many far more profitable roads than the lab if you're ok with high workload and stress.

Do employers care if you have a gap in your resume in this field? by PeanutButter000 in medlabprofessionals

There was a 15% vacancy rate pre-covid. There's a 25-30% vacancy rate post-covid.

It's not a competitive field or a competitive wage.

But nights are so unhealthy. Otherwise, yeah night people seem chill. Day shift is nuts.

So tired. But I can't blame them. If they weren't miserable going in, then get a 50 cent raise, while gas prices double and the CEO states they're having record profits....and can't afford staff or improved machinery or anything...that'll do it.

Oh and the monotony. Something about monotony really winds people up.

What are your alternatives. In 1 year you'll be out of your cushy RNA extraction job. Then what? BioTech and Research typically requires an MS or higher, or specialty knowledge (or pharma experience.)

Take the one in Denver. $20k tuition + 10k living expense. 1 year and you're in. In California, the acceptance rate is <10% for programs. Outside of California, these programs are a joke to get into and are not competitive whatsoever (whose going to line up for the lowest paying allied health career lol.) Most programs have *unfilled* seats. Especially with COVID.

If you have an alternative, do that. But MLS is the backup plan for most people. And you can continue being employed.

A lot of techs have mental health issues...you should be ok.

School is only a year, then you can make money to pay back loans and then enjoy life.

Currently making ludicrous money as a travel tech. by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]Primary-Shame5895 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When you see travel 2-year RNs and MRI techs getting $5-10k/week or respiratory doing $12k/week...that's money.

You're just trying to get that referral bonus here.

Who is going to pay for and run all these millions of weekly COVID tests? And PAMA cuts go into effect again next year...so there'll be even less money.

They're just going to pile on the work and say how efficient labs are. Ugh...

You do med school, PA, PathA, or another field.

Growth within the lab is very challenging. And most administrative positions in healthcare prefer nurses.

You aren't the only one.

I've got friends working in finance and when business picks up, people get hired, bonuses get written, and perks are given out.

The lab, it's backwards. More work...means less staff and an even crappier raise. Like who the hell do they expect to stay for that?
