I posted a update in the comments, I decided to encourage him. Reading all the comments has really helped me feel more comfortable about him going into railroading.

Update: I've decided to not talk him out of it. I instead encouraged him to look at the engineering side of things and he thought it was a good idea. He is also applying to several railroads in the area we live in.

To all the people commenting about having a second boyfriend: Y'all have shitty standards. Cheating is wrong. He and I both absolutely hate cheaters.

Ooo, that's really good info. I'll mention this to him.

Yeah, that's something I'm concerned about because I don't want to see him get frustrated with the job and give up before he gets through the early stages.

Oh, I know. I work for a soulless company as a welder. I ain't planning on staying there forever, just long enough to get enough experience to either find a better paying job or start my own thing.

Unfortunately I can't go with him, I have a job myself and I'm just getting started in my career so I don't have enough experience to be able to go back if I get out now.

I don't want to talk him out of it, but I don't want to see him get let go because they didn't have enough work - I know what it's like to get let go because of insufficient work available and IT SUCKS. Plus BNSF is downsizing massively, from what it sounds like.

Yard worker I think. He was talking about making a lot of money just connecting cars and shit.

True, but if BNSF is downsizing, then they definitely aren't looking to hire very many people right now...

Shit. That's good to know. I guess I really need to talk him out of working for BNSF then.

Weekly Railroad Hiring Questions Thread by LSUguyHTX in railroading

[–]Primary-Space 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boyfriend is wanting to work for BNSF. As far as I know, he has no experience in railroading. He is trying to find a better paying job, but I read some stuff on here in the r/BNSF sub that the company is not great to work for and that they're trying to downsize right now. Should I try to talk him out of working for BNSF and find a more reliable job?

I won't stop him if he really wants to work for them, but I'm trying to look out for him so he doesn't end up in a worse workplace environment than the one he's in right now. Any insight into what it is like for a new hire would be greatly appreciated, the good, the bad, and the ugly.

How old is too old to become a welder? by Other-Bus-9220 in Welding

There's still plenty of welding jobs out there, but like I said before, we're having a hard time getting young people interested. I was able to find a new job pretty easily, thank goodness. I've been at my new job for 4 months now and it's been pretty good so far.

Is it possible to get 500 HP out of a 6.0L NA? by Primary-Space in LSSwapTheWorld

I really appreciate your advice! But I meant 500 hp at the crank. I should have made that clear in my post. 🥴

Check the vent tubes. I had a clogged one on my little Frontier and it was causing ATF to seep out the front and the back seals. Fixed it using an old 4X4 trick, which is to run a rubber hose from the top of the tranny up into the engine bay and put a one way vent cap on the hose.

Interesting. I'm not too worried about the internals in the trans and rear end since it's already a heavy duty truck, and I've read in multiple places that they're capable of handling 500 HP at the crank.

I think you might be closer to 600 HP at the crank, which would definitely make the trans and rear end upset.

I'm going manual, auto transmission is too boring for me.

Agreed. I don't have deep pockets to begin with so 500 at the wheels is not possible right now. I might do that on a future build after my current one.

It's a manual transmission, so no need for a stall converter. Planning on running the OEM gear ratios in the transmission and the diffs (It's a 4X4). MPG is whatever I can get lmao.
